In this article authors would like to present the history of the "Neuropatologia Polska" journal (since 1994: "Folia Neuropathologica") in its first decade of existence. It outlines the circumstances surrounding the creation of the journal and shows how it evolved in the first years. The vast material analysed from the consecutive issues of the journal in the years from 1963 to 1972 was subjected to statistical and content analysis.

The Role of Progranulin (PGRN) in the Pathogenesis of Glioblastoma Multiforme.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) represents the most common and aggressive malignant form of brain tumour in adults and is characterized by an extremely poor prognosis with dismal survival rates. Currently, expanding concepts concerning the pathophysiology of GBM are inextricably linked with neuroinflammatory phenomena. On account of this fact, the identification of novel pathomechanisms targeting neuroinflammation seems to be crucial in terms of yielding successful individual therapeutic strategies.

Variations in the prevalence of atrial fibrillation, and in the strength of its association with ischemic stroke, in countries with different income levels: INTERSTROKE case-control study.

Background: The contribution of atrial fibrillation (AF) to the etiology and burden of stroke may vary by country income level.

Aims: We examined differences in the prevalence of AF and described variations in the magnitude of the association between AF and ischemic stroke by country income level.

Methods: In the INTERSTROKE case-control study, participants with acute first ischemic stroke were recruited across 32 countries.

Influence of Stress Urinary Incontinence and Pelvic Organ Prolapse on Depression, Anxiety, and Insomnia-A Comparative Observational Study.

Background: Among pelvic floor disorders (PFDs), overactive bladder is a well-recognized condition affecting mental health. The aim of this study was to assess whether there is a correlation between stress urinary incontinence (SUI), pelvic organ prolapse (POP), and mental health in comparison to control subjects and whether objective or subjective aspects of diseases are responsible for the aforementioned symptoms.

Methods: 192 patients with SUI, 271 with symptomatic prolapse (>2 in the POPQ scale), and 199 controls without pelvic floor disorders were included in this study.

The sense of loneliness and meaning in life in post-COVID convalescents-a preliminary study.

Introduction: The COVID-19 epidemic has provided opportunity to study the impact of a well-defined severe illness on the development of a depressive episode and the associated sense of loneliness and lack of meaning in life.

Materials And Methods: The aim of the study was to assess the occurrence of a reactive depressive episode, the severity of depression, a sense of loneliness and meaning in life in subjects who approximately a year earlier than the date of the study had suffered from a pulmonary form of SARS-CoV-2 infection with radiologically documented interstitial lesions of the lungs, requiring and not requiring hospitalization compared to people who did not develop the disease as a result of infection with that virus. The study included 63 subjects hospitalized for pulmonary lesions, 67 not hospitalized and 60 healthy controls.

Intranasal administration of antiseizure medications in chronic and emergency treatment: Hopes and challenges.

Despite the availability of many antiseizure medications (ASMs), 30 % of patients experience pharmacoresistant seizures. High-throughput screening methods undoubtedly remain one of the most important approaches for discovering new molecules to treat seizures. However, the costly and time-consuming nature of drug development prompts us to explore alternative strategies to counteract drug-resistant seizures.

Large haemorrhage within glioblastoma mimicking haemorrhagic stroke and coexistance of meningioma: a case of collision tumours.

Intracranial collision tumours are rare pathologies in which two distinct neoplasms are found in the same location. We present an unusual case of an intracranial collision tumour composed of meningothelial meningioma (CNS WHO G1) and glioblastoma (IDH-wildtype, CNS WHO G4). This collision tumour was found in a 64-year-old man.

The failure of the proper protein turnover in the nervous system is mainly linked to a variety of neurodegenerative disorders. Therefore, a better understanding of key protein degradation through the ubiquitin-proteasome system is critical for effective prevention and treatment of those disorders. The proteasome expression is tightly regulated by a CNC (cap'n'collar) family of transcription factors, amongst which the nuclear factor-erythroid 2-like bZIP factor 1 (NFE2L1, also known as Nrf1, with its long isoform TCF11 and short isoform LCR-F1) has been identified as an indispensable regulator of the transcriptional expression of the ubiquitin-proteasome system.

Behavioural Parameters of Circadian Rhythm Are Not Correlated with Dim Light Melatonin Onset: An Observational Study on Healthy Volunteers.

Dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) is considered the most reliable marker of the circadian rhythm phase in humans. DLMO may moderately correlate with sleep onset and sleep offset time. There are no sufficient data about the correlations between DLMO and clinical scales assessing sleep quality and daytime symptoms of poor night sleep.

Effect of Asymptomatic and Symptomatic COVID-19 on Acute Ischemic Stroke Revascularization Outcomes.

Background: The association of COVID-19 with higher bleeding risk and worse outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) undergoing revascularization may be related to the presence of infection symptoms. We aimed to assess the safety and outcomes of revascularization treatments in patients with AIS with asymptomatic COVID-19 (AS-COVID) or symptomatic COVID-19 (S-COVID).

Methods: We conducted an international multicenter retrospective cohort study of consecutive AIS tested for SARS-CoV-2, receiving intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular treatment between 2020 and 2021.

Safety and efficacy of factor XIa inhibition with milvexian for secondary stroke prevention (AXIOMATIC-SSP): a phase 2, international, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-finding trial.

Background: People with factor XI deficiency have lower rates of ischaemic stroke than the general population and infrequent spontaneous bleeding, suggesting that factor XI has a more important role in thrombosis than in haemostasis. Milvexian, an oral small-molecule inhibitor of activated factor XI, added to standard antiplatelet therapy, might reduce the risk of non-cardioembolic ischaemic stroke without increasing the risk of bleeding. We aimed to estimate the dose-response of milvexian for recurrent ischaemic cerebral events and major bleeding in patients with recent ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA).

'I Can Tell You It's a Bit of a Gamble': A Qualitative Analysis of How People Who Engage in Gaming and Gambling Understand a Link Between These Two Behaviours.

This article explores the attention given to potential motives and determinants of the transition process from video games to gambling. Forty individual interviews were conducted among active video game players (n = 20), and people diagnosed with a gambling disorder who had the experience of playing video games (n = 20). A qualitative thematic analysis was employed to explore the collected empirical data.

Prevention of infections and fever to improve outcome in older patients with acute stroke (PRECIOUS): a randomised, open, phase III, multifactorial, clinical trial with blinded outcome assessment.

Background: Infections and fever after stroke are associated with poor functional outcome or death. We assessed whether prophylactic treatment with anti-emetic, antibiotic, or antipyretic medication would improve functional outcome in older patients with acute stroke.

Methods: We conducted an international, 2∗2∗2-factorial, randomised, controlled, open-label trial with blinded outcome assessment in patients aged 66 years or older with acute ischaemic stroke or intracerebral haemorrhage and a score on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale ≥ 6.

Efficacy and Safety of Statin Treatment in Children with Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Outcomes of 20 Years of Experience.

Background: The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to present the experience of 20-year-long comprehensive care of pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in a single academic center.

Methods And Results: The study included 84 children aged 1-18 years with FH. For the whole study group, 535 medical visits were recorded.

External quality monitoring facilitates improvement in already well-performing stroke units: insights from RES-Q Poland.

Introduction: The Registry of Stroke Care Quality (RES-Q) is used in Poland for quality monitoring by numerous hospitals participating in the Angels Initiative. Our aim was to assess the degree of improvement in highly stroke-oriented centres that report cases to the RES-Q each year.

Material And Methods: This retrospective analysis included Polish stroke units that from January 2017 to December 2020 contributed to the RES-Q at least 25 patients annually.

Introduction: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with an unclear etiology. Systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation may play a role in the pathogenesis of ADHD. Morphology-derived parameters such as neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), have been proposed as peripheral biomarkers of the immune-inflammatory process in various diseases.

The Satisfaction with Life Domains Scale as an instrument for assessing quality - a psychometric evaluation.

Purpose: Basic indices of reliability, validity, and feasibility of the Polish language version of the Satisfaction with Life Domains Scale (SLDS) were assessed - this is one of the self-assessment measures of the subjective quality of life.

Methods: The combined database included 1,246 people from previous studies on stigma (n = 316) and recovery (n = 110), and individuals seeking psycho-social support (n = 820). Apart from SLDS, other measures of life functioning, experiences of stigma and discrimination, factors of personal recovery, and self-rated and clinician-rated psychopathology were used.

The European Insomnia Guideline: An update on the diagnosis and treatment of insomnia 2023.

Progress in the field of insomnia since 2017 necessitated this update of the European Insomnia Guideline. Recommendations for the diagnostic procedure for insomnia and its comorbidities are: clinical interview (encompassing sleep and medical history); the use of sleep questionnaires and diaries (and physical examination and additional measures where indicated) (A). Actigraphy is not recommended for the routine evaluation of insomnia (C), but may be useful for differential-diagnostic purposes (A).

Call for evidence-based psychedelic integration.

The use of psychedelics for various purposes was common in different civilizations throughout human history and has been explored scientifically for more than a century. Although the applications of psychedelics show promise in the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological indications, as well as in facilitation of well-being and personal growth, several psychedelic-related risks and challenges have also been identified. Psychedelic integration (PI) refers to various practices that serve to either minimize harms or maximize benefits associated with psychedelic use.

Identification of Molecular Mechanisms Responsible for the MMP-9-1562C/T Dependent Differential Regulation of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Expression in Human Neuron-like Cells.

The MMP-9-1562C/T polymorphism exerts an impact on the occurrence and progression of numerous disorders affecting the central nervous system. Using luciferase assays and Q-RT-PCR technique, we have discovered a distinct allele-specific influence of the MMP-9-1562C/T polymorphism on the (Extracellular Matrix Metalloproteinase-9) promoter activity and the expression of mRNA in human neurons derived from SH-SY5Y cells. Subsequently, by employing a pull-down assay paired with mass spectrometry analysis, EMSA (Electromobility Shift Assay), and EMSA supershift techniques, as well as DsiRNA-dependent gene silencing, we have elucidated the mechanism responsible for the allele-specific impact of the MMP-9-1562C/T polymorphism on the transcriptional regulation of the gene.

The prevalence of occupational burnout and its individual and situational predictors among addiction therapists.

This study assesses the prevalence and individual and organizational predictors of occupational burnout among addiction therapists. A total of 452 addiction therapists from a representative sample of 184 Polish alcohol treatment facilities (outpatient and inpatient) participated in the study (facility response rate = 42%). The Oldenburg Burnout Inventory was used to measure occupational burnout, and 15 subscales of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire II were administered to assess psychosocial work conditions.
