In Russia, a universal varicella vaccination (UVV) program has not been implemented, and varicella vaccination coverage is low. We assessed the efficacy, antibody persistence, and safety of one- and two-dose varicella vaccination schedules in Russian children with a ten-year follow-up period, as part of an international phase IIIB, observer-blind, randomized, controlled trial (NCT00226499). Children aged 12-22 months were randomized (3:3:1) to receive two doses of tetravalent measles-mumps-rubella-varicella vaccine (V2 group), one dose trivalent measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and one dose of varicella vaccine (V1 group), or two doses of MMR vaccine (V0 [control] group), 42 days apart.

Intestinal parasitic infection (IPI) constitute a global health burden causing clinical morbidity in 450 million people. Many of these are women of reproductive age and children in developing countries. Mass deworming programmes with improvement in lifestyle are likely to reduce the intensity and prevalence of infection over the years.

Interplay between the apoptosis, DNA damage, and oxidative stress as a host response to dengue viral infections remains unclear. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from 60 dengue infected patients, 20 patients with febrile illness other than dengue (OFI) and 10 non-febrile illness (NFI) patients. DNA damage in the PBMCs was assessed using single cell gel electrophoresis and stages of apoptosis underwent by the PBMCs were studied by Annexin-PI staining using flow cytometry.

Remote Endarterectomy and Lamina Vastoadductoria Dissection Improves Superficial Femoral Artery Biomechanical Behavior during Limb Flexion.

Ann Vasc Surg

July 2018

Department of Vascular Surgery and Kidney Transplantation, Les Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg, University of Strasbourg, Strasbourg, France. Electronic address:

Background: Superficial femoral artery (SFA) remote endarterectomy offers the advantage of preserving anatomy and geometry of the native artery, but the risk of restenosis still exists. The particular role of the adductor canal (AC) in mechanical constraints has been highlighted. The aim of this study was to assess if a surgical protocol associating remote SFA endarterectomy and AC freeing would modify the SFA geometrical changes during physiological limb flexion.

Objectives: The apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele is an established risk factor for dementia, yet this genetic variant is associated with a mixed cognitive profile across the lifespan. This study undertakes both a systematic and meta-analytic review of research investigating APOE-related differences in cognition in mid-adulthood, when detrimental effects of the allele may first be detectable.

Methods: Thirty-six papers investigating the behavioral effects of APOE ε4 in mid-adulthood (defined as a mean sample age between 35 and 60 years) were reviewed.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most commonly occurring metabolic and endocrinological disorders affecting women of reproductive age. Metabolomics is an emerging field that holds promise in understanding disease pathophysiology. Recently, a few metabolomics based studies have been attempted in PCOS patients; however, none of them have included patients from the Indian population.

Possession of an Apolipoprotein E (APOE) e4 allele is an established risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, whereas the less commonly studied e2 variant is premised to offer some protection. This research explores the purported deleterious-protective dichotomy of APOE variants on attentional control in mid-adulthood. Sixty-six volunteers, aged 45-55 years, completed 3 tasks that provided complementary measures of attentional control: prospective memory, sustained attention, and inhibition.

[Temporary biokeratoprostheses in total destruction of the cornea].

Vestn Oftalmol

August 2016

Novokuznetsk State Institute of Postgraduate Medicine, 5 Stroiteley prospekt, Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo Oblast, Russian Federation, 654005.

The paper presents an original method for temporary biokeratoprothetics in total destruction of the cornea, which consists of the following. In the operating room a 12-mm disc is cut out of patient's conchal cartilage by a trephine and then thinned down to 1 mm with a blade. The prepared autograft is placed in front of the iris completely overlapping corneal defect and sutured to the sclera with 10--12 U-shaped interrupted stitches using a 7/0 suture.

Hypertension and inflammation in Alzheimer's disease: close partners in disease development and progression!

J Alzheimers Dis

February 2015

Cognitive Treatment and Research Unit, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Uckfield, East Sussex, UK Institute of Postgraduate Medicine, Brighton & Sussex Medical School, University of Brighton, Falmer, Brighton, UK.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is by far the most common sporadic neurodegenerative disorder. Clinically it is associated with cognitive and other neuropsychological impairments, and neuropathologically it is distinguished by presence of amyloid-β plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Hypertension has been traditionally associated with the etiology of vascular dementia, however, vascular risk factors including hypertension are increasingly being implicated in AD.
