Evaluation of a new method of oral health education in children with cleft lip and palate.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of an oral health educational programme in children with cleft lip and palate.

Methods: The sample comprised 38 children with cleft lip and palate: Group 1-dental prophylaxis; Group 2-education and motivation instructions in oral health and plaque control. Children were evaluated during six appointments, at 30-day intervals.

Root-filled teeth and recurrent caries-a study of three repeated cross-sectional samples from the city of Jönköping, Sweden.

Objective: The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that root-filled teeth are at a higher caries risk than non-root-filled teeth.

Materials And Methods: Two sub-samples from epidemiologically obtained data collected in 1983, 1993 and 2003 in the city of Jönköping, Sweden, were analysed. All the participants were examined clinically and radiographically and the type of filling and the presence or absence of caries were recorded.

Underlying dimensions of verbal communication between dentists and patients in prosthetic dentistry.

The study explores whether the task-focused and socio-emotional dimensions of clinical communication is recognizable in the verbal communication context of prosthetic dentistry, as well as if there are other dimensions of communication in that context. Sixty-one audio recordings were made at three specialist clinics of prosthetic dentistry in Sweden. Sixty-one patients and 15 dentists participated.

The analgesic efficacy of diclofenac dispersible and ibuprofen in postoperative pain after dental extraction.

We have compared single oral doses of drinkable diclofenac dispersible (50 mg) with ibuprofen (400 mg) and placebo in a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group trial in 127 adults complaining of at least moderately severe pain after removal of an impacted third molar. Within 40 min both diclofenac and ibuprofen produced significant pain relief that persisted for 6 h. There were no differences between diclofenac and ibuprofen in analgesic efficacy.

Prosthetic reconstruction of dentitions seriously compromised by periodontal disease.

Dentitions seriously compromised by periodontal disease are often in need not only of cause-related periodontal therapy of high quality but also of relevant prosthetic rehabilitation. Contrary to traditional claims, clinical investigations published during the last 2 decades demonstrate that, if adequately treated and controlled, such dentitions can carry fixed, cross-arch bridges on an extremely reduced amount of periodontium, with a good long-range prognosis. It has also been shown that a markedly reduced but healthy and favourably distributed periodontium supporting such constructions can withstand occlusal forces of considerable magnitude.
