We report a very rare case of clear cell variant of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in a 3-year-old male child, who presented to us with a left-sided lump in his abdomen. Computed tomography (CT) scan and technetium-99 Dimercapto succinic acid (DMSA) scan revealed a large left renal mass with compromised left renal function. Left-sided nephroureterectomy was done and histopathology demonstrated clear cell carcinoma, possibly translocation-associated RCC (miT family) staged as pT2NxMx.

Introduction: Frontal gait disorder/gait apraxia is a higher-order motor deficit with various causes, characterized by difficulties with gait initiation, such as freezing or ignition failure. We aimed to report a patient who presented with progressive higher-level gait disorder and fall episodes as the initial manifestations of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Patient data were obtained from medical records from the Department of General Medicine, Burdwan Medical College and Hospital (Burdwan, West Bengal, India).

Objectives: Presence and dissemination of plasmid-mediated AmpC genes (pAmpCs) have made bacteria cephalosporin-resistant and assessment of their prevalence and diversity is essential. Coexistence of pAmpCs with New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (bla) has facilitated their spread and NDM interferes with correct pAmpC phenotypic identification.

Methods: Assessment of pAmpCs in different species and sequence types (STs), co-transmission with bla and phenotypic detection were analysed among Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 256) and Escherichia coli (n = 92) isolated from septicaemic neonates over 13 years.

  • A study explored acute onset movement disorders in 59 patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) in West Bengal, finding that most had choreic or ballistic movements, with ballism being the most common disorder.
  • The analysis revealed that 76.3% of patients experienced nonketotic hyperglycemia, and 55.9% showed no MRI abnormalities while some exhibited striatal hyperintensity.
  • The research emphasizes the need for blood glucose checks in patients with sudden movement disorders, even if they have normal past glycemic levels, as most (76.3%) recovered fully.

Background: Mastoidectomy is associated with extensive bone-drilling which makes it a major aerosol generating procedure. Considering the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, it is essential to devise methods to minimize aerosolization and hence ensure safety of the healthcare workers during the operative procedure.

Methods: Two disposable surgical drapes are used to create a closed pocket prior to commencement of mastoid bone-drilling.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess change in temperature, audiometric outcomes and post-operative complications following exposure to different light sources during endoscopic ear surgery.

Method: A total of 64 patients diagnosed with chronic otitis media with central perforation and pure conductive hearing loss underwent endoscopic type 1 tympanoplasty. The patients were randomised into two groups based on the light source used: xenon or light-emitting diode.

The 2019 Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has disrupted the social, economical and medical system worldwide. Although it is strictly an infectious disease, its intricate bidirectional relationship with various non-communicable metabolic diseases and endocrinological factors has been observed. While diabetes, hypertension, obesity have been found to be independent risk factors for COVID-19 disease severity and mortality, more inclination towards sedentary lifestyle, psychosocial stress at this critical time may be the harbingers of metabolic syndrome.

Jaw clonus, a fascinating, yet uncommon clinical sign, is suggestive of supranuclear lesions of the trigeminal nerve. It has previously been reported in association with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Hereby, we report an index case of jaw clonus in a patient of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder with subsequent osmotic demyelination syndrome with pseudobulbar palsy due to the involvement of pontine corticobulbar fibres.

Objectives: To compare endoscopic transcanal approach to attic cholesteatoma with conventional microscopic transcanal technique METHODS: Seventy-eight patients diagnosed with attic cholesteatoma were randomly assigned into two groups-one undergoing endoscopic approach and the other microscopic technique. The two groups were compared in terms of area of exposure, access to hidden areas in terms of Middle Ear Structural Visibility Index (MESVI), intraoperative time, postoperative pain, vertigo, long-term hearing, and surgical outcomes.

Results: The mean area of exposure in endoscopic atticotomy required was less than that in microscopic group and was found to be statistically significant.

Paraganglioma of the urinary bladder are tumors of chromaffin tissue originating from the sympathetic innervations of the urinary bladder wall and are extremely rare. Being functional, in most of the cases they are recognized by their characteristic presentation of hypertensive crisis and postmicturition syncope. A silent presentation of a bladder paraganglioma is very unusual but quite dangerous as they are easily misdiagnosed and adequate peri-operative attention is not provided.
