Scrub typhus is a zoonotic disease that typically presents as an acute febrile illness. It is caused by the rickettsial organism , which is prevalent in the Asian region. The clinical manifestations of scrub typhus can vary significantly, ranging from mild febrile illness to severe multiorgan dysfunction syndrome.

In India and the Southeast Asian population, hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are the leading lifestyle-related diseases, responsible for a majority burden of morbidity and mortality. Multiple population-spanning studies have revealed the staggering prevalence of both diseases in India, and the prevalence of both will only increase further due to factors such as an aging population, rapid urbanization, increased obesity, and sedentary lifestyles. More than 50 percent of hypertensive patients in India are also diagnosed with T2DM, and a detailed management protocol for the same is required, especially when a major portion of the disease is managed at the primary care level.

Bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors are rare, slow-growing malignant neuroendocrine tumors. Early diagnosis is pivotal as surgical resection is the main stay of treatment. A 40-year-old female with typical bronchial carcinoid presented with complaints of breathlessness on mild to moderate exertion, intermittent productive cough, low-grade fever, and loss of appetite since 1 year.

India experiences a significant amount of morbidity and mortality due to gliomas particularly glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), which ranks among the worst cancers. Oxaloacetate (OAA) is a human keto acid that is central to cellular metabolism; it has been recognized by the US FDA for use in GBM patients, triggering a review to revisit the cellular mechanism of its therapeutic action. Various cellular and molecular studies have proposed that instead of fueling the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), gliomas prefer to use glycolysis (the Warburg effect) to fuel macromolecules for the synthesis of nucleotides, fatty acids, and amino acids for the accelerated mitosis.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a serious public health issue and may also contribute to modification in the structure of the intestinal microbiota, implying a link between T2D and microbial inhabitants in the digestive tract. This work aimed to develop efficient models for identifying essential physiological markers for improved T2D classification using machine learning algorithms. Using amplicon metagenomic approaches, an effort has also been made to understand the alterations in core gut microbial members in Indian T2D patients with respect to their control normal glucose tolerance (NGT).

Purpose: In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF), namely ranibizumab (RBZ) or bevacizumab (BVZ), after either focal or grid or scatter laser photocoagulation, for the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME) in the Indian population.
Methods: Retrospective data were collected in the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Kolkata, India between January 2018 and June 2019. Seventy-seven eyes received 3 consecutive monthly intravitreal injections of RBZ (0.

Background: Studies have established that Theory of Mind (ToM) is impaired in patients with depression, but few studies have investigated the status of ToM in breast cancer patients who often suffer from depression. Our objective was to compare the ToM deficits in women with breast cancer with and without depression with a control group.
Methods: The study was conducted at the Oncology department of a multi-speciality hospital in Kolkata.

Objectives: Data from point prevalence surveys (PPSs) in India are scarce. Conducting PPSs is especially challenging in the absence of electronic medical records, a lack of dedicated resources and a high patient load in resource-poor settings. This multicentre survey was conducted to provide background data for planning and strengthening antimicrobial stewardship programmes across the country.

The risk of fracture is increased in both type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, in contrast to the former, patients with T2DM usually possess higher bone mineral density. Thus, there is a considerable difference in the pathophysiological basis of poor bone health between the two types of diabetes.

Co-endemicity of SARS-CoV-2 and dengue virus (DV) infection is becoming a matter of serious concern as it has been already reported that antibodies (Ab) elicited by SARS-CoV-2 infection can produce false-positive results in dengue IgG and IgM rapid tests and . Here we communicate that five of thirteen DV antibody-positive serum samples from Kolkata, archived in 2017 (predating the COVID-19 outbreak), produced false-positive results in SARS-CoV-2 IgG/IgM lateral flow-based rapid tests. Our results emphasize the importance of implementing tests with higher specificity to conduct sero-surveillance for accurate estimation of SARS-CoV-2/DV prevalence in regions where both viruses now co-exist.

Altered patterns of recombination on 21q have long been associated with the nondisjunction chromosome 21 within oocytes and the increased risk of having a child with Down syndrome. Unfortunately the genetic etiology of these altered patterns of recombination have yet to be elucidated. We for the first time genotyped the gene MCM9, a candidate gene for recombination regulation and DNA repair in mothers with or without children with Down syndrome.

Methods: Seventy-six patients diagnosed with chronic otitis media (mucosal variety) were randomly assigned to two treatment groups: endoscopic epitympanic exploration and conventional canal wall up (cortical) mastoidectomy. The groups were compared in terms of: post-operative anatomical outcomes (graft uptake), middle-ear physiological outcomes (post-operative tympanometry), audiological outcomes (air-bone gap), surgical time, post-operative pain, vertigo, and long-term complications such as retraction pocket and re-perforation.

The present study aimed to explore the early predictive marker of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and to elucidate the associated demographic, metabolic, and ocular factors. We enrolled 43 type 2 diabetic subjects with mild non-proliferative retinopathy (MNPDR), 30 diabetic subjects with no retinopathy (DNR), and 35 healthy controls (HC). The study groups showed no significant alteration in central macular thickness (CMT) and visual acuity (VA).

The toxicity of accumulated α-synuclein plays a key role in the neurodegeneration of Parkinson's disease (PD). This study has demonstrated that iron in varying concentrations (up to 400 µM) causes an increase in α-synuclein content in SH-SY5Y cells associated with mitochondrial depolarization, decreased cellular ATP content and loss of cell viability during incubation up to 96 h. Knocking-down α-synuclein expression prevents cytotoxic actions of iron, which can also be prevented by cyclosporine A (a blocker of mitochondrial permeability transition pore).

Aim: The primary objective of this review is to develop a practice-based expert group opinion on the role of precision medicine with a specific focus on sulfonylureas (SUs) in diabetes management.
Background: The clinical etiology, presentation and complications of diabetes vary from one patient to another, making the management of the disease challenging. The pre-eminent feature of diabetes mellitus (DM) are chronically elevated blood glucose concentrations; however, in clinical practice, the exclusion of autoimmunity, pregnancy, pancreatic disease or injury and rare genetic forms of diabetes is crucial.
