Background: Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is a childhood malignancy known to be associated with congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM).

Case Report: An 18 months boy presented with respiratory distress. Computed tomography (CT) scans revealed a large right-sided lung mass.

A Cross-sectional Prospective Study of Asymptomatic Urinary Abnormalities, Blood Pressure, and Body Mass Index in Healthy School Children.

Introduction: Screening school children for urinary abnormalities is an inexpensive task but is not commonly undertaken in India. Although debated in western countries, its utility in early diagnosis of kidney disorders has been proved by studies from Asia. We examined the prevalence of asymptomatic urinary abnormalities (AUA), obesity, and hypertension in school children and analyzed data to identify potential risk factors among those detected with such abnormalities.

Polymorphisms in ADH1B and ALDH2 genes associated with the increased risk of gastric cancer in West Bengal, India.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most frequently diagnosed digestive tract cancers and carries a high risk of mortality. Acetaldehyde (AA), a carcinogenic intermediate of ethanol metabolism contributes to the risk of GC. The accumulation of AA largely depends on the activity of the major metabolic enzymes, alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase encoded by the ADH (ADH1 gene cluster: ADH1A, ADH1B and ADH1C) and ALDH2 genes, respectively.

Impairment of energy sensors, SIRT1 and AMPK, in lipid induced inflamed adipocyte is regulated by Fetuin A.

Although several reports demonstrated that accumulation of excess lipid in adipose tissue produces defects in adipocyte which leads to the disruption of energy homeostasis causing severe metabolic problems, underlying mechanism of this event remains yet unclear. Here we demonstrate that FetuinA (FetA) plays a critical role in the impairment of two metabolic sensors, SIRT1 and AMPK, in inflamed adipocytes of high fat diet (HFD) mice. A linear increase in adipocyte hypertrophy from 10 to 16 week was in tandem with the increase in FetA and that coincided with SIRT1 cleavage and decrease in pAMPK which adversely affects PGC1α activation.

Islets of type 2 diabetes patients display inflammation, elevated levels of cytokines and macrophages. The master regulator of inflammation in the islets is free fatty acids (FFA). It has already been reported that FFA and TLR4 stimulation induces pro-inflammatory factors in the islets.

The absence of ganglion cells along with an analysis of hypertrophy and hyperplasia of nerves in the nerve plexus of submucosa and muscularis mucosae is regarded as a potential hallmark for its diagnosis.

A Small Insulinomimetic Molecule Also Improves Insulin Sensitivity in Diabetic Mice.

Dramatic increase of diabetes over the globe is in tandem with the increase in insulin requirement. This is because destruction and dysfunction of pancreatic β-cells are of common occurrence in both Type1 diabetes and Type2 diabetes, and insulin injection becomes a compulsion. Because of several problems associated with insulin injection, orally active insulin mimetic compounds would be ideal substitute.

Molecular characterization and evaluation of the emerging antibiotic-resistant Streptococcus pyogenes from eastern India.

Background: Group A Streptococcus strains causing wide variety of diseases, recently became noticeable in eastern India, are not amenable to standard treatment protocol thus enhancing the possibility of disease morbidity by becoming antibiotic resistance.

Methods: The association of Lancefield group A Streptococcal variation with degree of vir architectural diversity was evaluated using emm typing and restriction fragment length polymorphism analyses. The antibiotic sensitivity patterns were examined by modified Kirby-Bauer method of disk diffusion.

Epidemiology of dementia and its burden in the city of Kolkata, India.

Objectives: Increase in aging population is expected to lead to increasing prevalence of dementia in India. In this study, we aimed to determine prevalence, incidence, and mortality of dementia and its subtypes and assess dementia burden in terms of disability-adjusted life years (DALY).

Methods: A community study was conducted over 5 years (2003-2008) in Kolkata, India, on 100,802 (males 53,209) randomly selected subjects to assess prevalence and capture data on incident cases and deaths.

NMR-based metabonomics for understanding the influence of dormant female genital tuberculosis on metabolism of the human endometrium.

Study Question: Does investigation of metabolic perturbations in endometrial tissue of women with dormant genital tuberculosis (GTB) during the window of implantation (WOI) assist in improving the understanding of endometrial receptivity?

Summary Answer: In dormant GTB cases significant alterations in endometrial tissue metabolites occur, largely related to energy metabolism and amino acid biosynthesis in dormant GTB cases.

What Is Known Already: As an intracellular pathogen, Mycobacterium tuberculosis strongly influences the metabolism of host cells causing metabolic dysregulation. It is also accepted that dormant GTB impairs the receptive status of the endometrium.

Hirschsprung's Disease in Neonates with Special Reference to Calretinin Immunohistochemistry.

Background: Hirschsprung's disease is a classic example of a complex genetic disease, characterized by the lack of enteric ganglia in the submucosal and myenteric plexuses, along variable portions of the distal gut. The diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease is based on a combination of clinical features, radiological appearance of the bowel and histological features in Haematoxylin & Eosin stained sections of intestinal biopsies. Calretinin Immunohistochemistry is emerging to be one of the newer methods.

Role of NF-κB activation and VEGF gene polymorphisms in VEGF up regulation in non-proliferative and proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

The present study was aimed to investigate the relation between nuclear factor kappa beta (NFκB) activation and downstream up-regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in diabetic retinopathy (DR). Moreover the study was intended to evaluate the role of VEGF gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DR occurrence and to investigate the functional relevance of VEGF gene SNPs in terms of VEGF expression in DR. Serum level of VEGF, VEGF R1 (receptor 1), VEGF R 2 (receptor 2) and NFκB (p50/65) activity was measured by enzyme linked immune sorbent assay.

Can molecular subtyping replace axillary nodal status as prognostic marker in breast cancer?

Subtypes are an established prognostic factor of BC in western population but its significance in Indian BC patients has not been evaluated. Thus this study provides an insight into the prognostic significance of molecular classification and its effect on the survival of BC patients in Eastern India. In this hospital based study 242 BC patients attending a Comprehensive Breast Service Clinic of a reputed institute in Eastern India and having IDC were studied over a period of 7 years (January 2007 to October 2013).

Health Related Quality of Life and its Predictors among Bengali Thalassemic Children Admitted to a Tertiary Care Hospital.

Objective: To assess the quality of life among thalassemic children and to find out association of quality of life (QOL) with the socio-demographic factors, and clinico-therapeutic profile.

Methods: This cross sectional descriptive epidemiological study was conducted from July 2011 through June 2012 on 365 admitted thalassemic patients of 5 to 12 y of age in the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. Parents of the children were interviewed using Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.

Healing of burn wounds by topical treatment: A randomized controlled comparison between silver sulfadiazine and nano-crystalline silver.

Background: Silver sulfadiazine (SSD) has been the standard topical antimicrobial for burn wounds for decades. Recently, nanometer-sized silver particles are available which have high surface to volume ratio and remain effective even at a very low concentration and minimizes the chance for tissue toxicity due to silver. Hence, we conducted a randomized controlled trial to compare the effectiveness of topical SSD and nano-crystalline silver (AgNP) hydrogel in burn wounds management.

Effect of kangaroo mother care on vital physiological parameters of the low birth weight newborn.

Objectives: Low birth weight (LBW; <2500 g), which is often associated with preterm birth, is a common problem in India. Both are recognized risk factors for neonatal mortality. Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a non-conventional, low-cost method for newborn care based upon intimate skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby.

Correlates of functional outcome among stroke survivors in a developing country--a prospective community-based study from India.

Stroke survivors (SS) are rising with higher incidence of stroke in developing countries. In addition to physical impairment, other factors such as cognition, social interaction, and depression determine the functional outcome after stroke. Considering the paucity of data from developing countries, we planned to determine the change in various functional parameters among SS.

The PRESS V study was aimed to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of saroglitazar 2 mg and 4 mg capsules (Lipaglyn™; Zydus Code: ZYH1) as compared to high dose pioglitazone in patients with diabetic dyslipidemia. In this 26-week double-blind, parallel arm, phase 3 study patients with hypertriglyceridemia with type 2 diabetes mellitus (BMI > 23 kg/m; hypertriglyceridemia: TG > 200 to 400 mg/dL; glycosylated hemoglobin [HbA] >7 to 9%) were enrolled from 14 sites in India.

Role of Cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) in Prognosis of Breast Cancer.

COX-2 regulates tumour growth, invasion and metastasis in breast cancer. This study investigated the association between COX-2 expression in human breast cancer versus the expression of ER, PR, HER-2/neu, as well as its association with other established prognostic indicators like age, menopausal status, tumour size, lymph nodal status, stage, grade, NPI and histological subtype, and aims to validate the role of overexpression of COX-2 as a prognostic marker in patients with breast cancer in Indian subcontinent. In this hospital based study of 123 breast cancer patients (Group-A) and 76 female patients with benign breast disease (Group-B) attending a Comprehensive Breast Clinic at a reputed institute in Eastern India, COX-2 protein expression was measured from breast tissue using the Western Blot Technique.

Dengue fever in a rural area of West Bengal, India, 2012: an outbreak investigation.

Background: During September 2012, an increased number of fever cases was reported from Ramnagar-II block, Purba Medinipur district. This study investigated the outbreak, with the following objectives: to describe the distribution of fever cases, to determine the risk factors and to recommend preventive measures.

Materials And Methods: The clinical features, date of onset and outcome of all cases of fever were listed.
