Background: The potential reservoirs of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in South Asia include asymptomatic and relapsed cases of VL, along with patients with post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL). Accordingly, accurate estimation of their parasite load is pivotal for ensuring disease elimination, presently targeted for 2023. Serological tests cannot accurately detect relapses and/or monitor treatment effectiveness, and therefore, parasite antigen/nucleic acid based detection assays remain the only viable option.

Background: There is a dearth of studies on non-motor symptoms of Wilson's disease (WD) which is primarily because of the non-availability of a suitable scale.
Objective: To assess the suitability of the Parkinson's Disease non motor symptoms questionnaire (PD-NMS Quest) in the assessment of non-motor symptoms of WD patients.
Methods: In this case-control study, patients of WD above ≥12 years of age diagnosed by Leipzig's criteria and age and gender-matched control subjects were recruited.

Purpose: International prostate symptom score (IPSS) is a complex questionnaire method for objective assessment of Lower urinary tract symptoms. So, there is a need to develop a simple and easy scoring system that could be easily used for illiterates and older aged patients.
Materials And Methods: It was a prospective observational study with 202 participants, conducted at the department of urology of a tertiary care hospital in eastern India.

Objective: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common glucose metabolism disease occurs in pregnancy that affects both maternal and neonatal health. Recently, increasing studies have attached importance to the relationship between growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) and GDM, but the results were inconclusive. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to examine the association between GDF-15 and GDM.

Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-IV) is a ubiquitous proteolytic enzyme that cleaves incretin hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP1) and gastric inhibitory protein (GIP), leading to reduced glucose stimulated insulin secretion from the pancreatic beta cells. The functionally active enzyme is present in a membrane bound form in several cell types as well as in a soluble form in the circulation. The present report deals with DPP-IV expression and its regulation in the pancreatic beta cells in presence of free fatty acids (FFAs) and Fetuin-A, a circulatory glycoprotein associated with insulin resistance in humans and animals.

Background: The complement system functions primarily as a first-line host defense against invading microbes, including viruses. However, the interaction of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) with the complement-components during chronic HBV infection remains largely unknown. We investigated the mechanism by which HBV inhibits the formation of cytolytic complement membrane-attack complex (MAC) and studied its impact on MAC-mediated microbicidal activity and disease pathogenesis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a genetically heterogeneous neurodegenerative disease with poorly defined environmental influences. Genomic studies of PD patients have identified disease-relevant monogenic genes, rare variants of significance, and polygenic risk-associated variants. In this study, whole genome sequencing data from 90 young onset Parkinson's disease (YOPD) individuals are analyzed for both monogenic and polygenic risk.

Pathological cardiac remodeling as an aftermath of a severe cardiac injury can lead to ventricular dysfunction and subsequent heart failure. Adamts4, a metalloproteinase, and disintegrin with thrombospondin-like motif, involved in the turnover of certain extracellular matrix molecules and pathogenesis of osteoarthritis, also plays a role in cardiac remodeling although little is presently known about its expression and function in the heart. Here, we have investigated the dynamic expression pattern of Adamts4 during cardiogenesis and also in the adult heart.

Background: The global burden of leishmaniasis is exacerbated by the limited repertoire of drugs, resulting in an urgent need to develop new therapeutic alternatives. Endoperoxides like ascaridole have emerged as promising anti-parasitic candidates, and its effectiveness was established in an animal model of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). However, its impact on Leishmania donovani parasites, causative of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) remains to be established.

Background: To combat the COVID-19 pandemic, several countries imposed strict lockdown to ensure social distancing to limit the spread of the virus. This caused difficulties in the management and care of patients with various chronic disorders including dementia.
Objectives: The objective of the study was to explore the health condition of patients with dementia and assess their caregivers' burden during the lockdown.

Background: Vascular dementia (VaD) is a clinically heterogeneous entity. There is a dearth of studies for comparison of the cognitive profile of cerebral small-vessel disease (SVD) with large-vessel disease.
Objective: We planned to evaluate and compare the cognitive profile of SVD and large-vessel VaD and evaluate various risk factors associated with them.

Pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-diones were synthesized, for the first time, from indole chalcones and 6-aminouracil, and their ability to inhibit leishmaniasis and tuberculosis (Tb) infections was evaluated. The in vitro antileishmanial activity against promastigotes of Leishmania donovani revealed exceptional activities of compounds 3, 12 and 13, with IC values ranging from 10.23 ± 1.

Introduction: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of motor neurons. Spread of pathology to other brain areas leads to development of non-motor symptoms (NMSs). These usually remain undiagnosed because of overwhelming motor problem and are responsible for significant distress to the patient.

Glial dysfunction outraging CNS plasticity and integrity results in one of the most dangerous cancers, namely glioma, featuring little median survival period and high recurrence. The hallmark properties of proliferation, invasion and angiogenesis with the infiltrated macrophages in glioma are expected to be tightly coupled or cross-linked, but not properly related so far. The present study is aimed to find a relationship between this featured quadrangle from lower to higher grades (HG) of post-operative glioma tissues and their invading subsets.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of various outcomes of acute levodopa challenge test (ALCT) namely improvement of motor function, development of dyskinesia and intolerance; to predict the diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) or Parkinson-plus syndrome; to predict levodopa responsiveness and levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID) during long-term therapy.
Methods: ALCT was performed on 89 patients with parkinsonism of <2 years and were followed up for 18 months. Improvement of UPDRSm by ≥30% was considered positive.

Obesity induced insulin resistance is primarily regulated by the inhibitory phosphorylation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ at serine 273 (PPARγS273) which has been shown to be regulated by MEK and ERK. An upstream regulatory molecule of this pathway could be a therapeutic option. Here we analyzed the involvement of Fetuin-A (FetA), a key hepato-adipokine implicated in insulin resistance, as an upstream regulator molecule for the regulation of PPARγ inhibitory phosphorylation.
