Background: Pelvic organ prolapse is common, causes unpleasant symptoms and negatively affects women's quality of life. In the UK, most women with pelvic organ prolapse attend clinics for pessary care.

Objectives: To determine the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of vaginal pessary self-management on prolapse-specific quality of life for women with prolapse compared with clinic-based care; and to assess intervention acceptability and contextual influences on effectiveness, adherence and fidelity.

The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of telemedicine on ophthalmic screening and blood glucose control for patients with diabetes in remote areas of Northern Taiwan during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Telemedicine was implemented in Shiding and Wanli Districts using a 5G platform from April 2021 to December 2022. Patients with poorly controlled diabetes received real-time consultations from endocrinologists at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, 50 km away, for medication adjustment, diet control, and lifestyle recommendations.

Objectives: There has been a recent proliferation in treatment options for patients with metastatic breast cancer. Such treatments often involve trade-offs between overall survival and side effects. Our study aims to estimate the trade-offs that could be used to inform decision-making at the individual and policy level.

July 2024

Institute of Population Health Sciences, National Health Research Institutes, Taiwan; National Center for Geriatrics and Welfare Research, National Health Research Institutes, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how pulse pressure and hypertension relate to reduced physical function in older adults over an average of 6.19 years.
  • Researchers analyzed data from Taiwanese adults aged 55 and older, measuring handgrip strength, gait speed, and walking distance to assess physical decline.
  • Findings revealed that higher baseline pulse pressure correlated with future declines in handgrip strength and gait speed, with older adults having elevated blood pressure at greater risk of weakness, slowness, and lower endurance.

Department of Orthopedics, Wan Fang Hospital, Taipei Medical University, No. 111, Sec. 3, Xinglong Road, Wenshan, Taipei 11696, Taiwan (R.O.C.).

Background: Despite being the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is an underutilized screening tool for osteoporosis.

Objectives: This study proposed and validated a controllable feature layer of a convolutional neural network (CNN) model with a preprocessing image algorithm to classify osteoporosis and predict -score on the proximal hip region simple hip radiographs.

Design: This was a single-center, retrospective study.

Department of Pediatrics & Child Health, Director MRC Unit on Child & Adolescent Health, Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa.

Monitoring is a major component of asthma management in children. Regular monitoring allows for diagnosis confirmation, treatment optimization, and natural history review. Numerous factors that may affect disease activity and patient well-being need to be monitored: response and adherence to treatment, disease control, disease progression, comorbidities, quality of life, medication side-effects, allergen and irritant exposures, diet and more.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammatory T cells play a role in autoimmune diseases, specifically systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), with research identifying the pseudogene UHRF1P as a potential new biomarker for SLE.
  • The UHRF1P protein, which is overexpressed in SLE patients' T cells, lacks a key domain that affects its function, leading to increased levels of the inflammatory cytokine IL-17A.
  • In mouse models, UHRF1P promotes autoimmune inflammation by preventing the degradation of a kinase (MAP4K3) that contributes to IL-17A production, indicating a mechanism by which it influences autoimmune disease progression.

Introduction: Inflammation is an emerging target for secondary prevention after stroke and randomised trials of anti-inflammatory therapies are ongoing. Fibrinogen, a putative pro-inflammatory marker, is associated with first stroke, but its association with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) after stroke is unclear.

Materials And Methods: We did a systematic review investigating the association between fibrinogen and post-stroke vascular recurrence.

  • - The study aimed to investigate how maternal folic acid supplementation (FAS) during pregnancy affects childhood overweight, obesity, and body fat levels in a cohort of 1479 children evaluated at an average age of 6.4 years.
  • - Results showed that maternal FAS was linked to a reduced risk of childhood overweight and lower body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentages, with significant associations noted particularly for children not breastfed and whose parents had lower education levels.
  • - The findings suggest that taking folic acid during pregnancy may help lower the chances of childhood overweight and obesity, highlighting the importance of nutrition during pregnancy and its long-term effects on children's health.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the economic impact of an accelerated protocol (AP) for diagnosing myocardial infarction (MI) using high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) compared to conventional testing methods.
  • Conducted across nine emergency departments, the research analyzed costs and length of stay for nearly 32,450 patients suspected of having MI.
  • Results showed that the AP did not significantly increase treatment costs or length of stay overall, but some lower acuity emergency departments experienced shorter stays and lower health system costs with the AP.

Objective: Early diagnosis and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) are vital for a better prognosis. Still, because of obscure anatomical sites and insidious symptoms, nearly 80% of patients with NPC are diagnosed at a late stage. This study aimed to validate a machine learning (ML) model utilizing symptom-related diagnoses and procedures in medical records to predict nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) occurrence and reduce the prediagnostic period.

Background: Robustly examining associations between long-term conditions may be important in identifying opportunities for intervention in multimorbidity but is challenging when evidence is limited. We have developed a Bayesian inference framework that is robust to sparse data and used it to quantify morbidity associations in the oldest old, a population with limited available data.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of a representative dataset of primary care patients in Scotland as of March 2007.
