Aim: There is a need to evaluate the tissue deformation index of lateral abdominal muscles using M-mode ultrasound in a cohort of healthy subjects to establish a convenient reference point for clinical reasoning in patients. The aim of the study was to assess differences in the tissue deformation index between individual lateral abdominal muscles regardless of body side, compare these differences in the tissue deformation index on the right and left sides of the body, and evaluate side-to-side differences in the tissue deformation index within individual lateral abdominal muscles.

Material And Methods: In a group of 126 healthy volunteers (59 females), the postural response of lateral abdominal muscles to external perturbation in the form of rapid arm abduction with load was recorded on both sides of the body, and the tissue deformation index was calculated.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are ubiquitous in the environment and display the capacity to bioaccumulate in living organisms, constituting a hazard to both wildlife and humans. Although restrictions have been applied to prohibit the production of several POPs since the 1960s, high levels of these compounds can still be detected in many environmental and biological matrices, due to their chemical properties and significantly long half-lives. Some POPs can be passed from mother to the fetus and can gain entry to the central nervous system (CNS), by crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB), resulting in significant deleterious effects, including neurocognitive and psychiatric abnormalities, which may lead to long-term socio-economic burdens.

Over the past couple of decades, it has become apparent that skeletal muscles might be engaged in endocrine signaling, mostly as a result of exercise or physical activity in general. The importance of this phenomenon is currently studied in terms of the impact that exercise- or physical activity -induced signaling factors have, in the interaction of the "muscle-brain crosstalk." So far, skeletal muscle-derived myokines were demonstrated to intercede in the connection between muscles and a plethora of various organs such as adipose tissue, liver, or pancreas.

Article Synopsis
  • Reasoning involves drawing conclusions from information, with two main types: deductive (drawing specific conclusions from general principles) and inductive (generalizing from specific instances).
  • Recent neuroimaging studies suggest that different brain areas, specifically the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), are used for these reasoning types, but results have been inconsistent.
  • This study utilized high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) on these brain areas to assess their roles in reasoning, finding that IFG stimulation can impair deductive reasoning tasks, while DLPFC stimulation improves performance on challenging inductive reasoning tasks.
