December 2024

Australian Centre for Water and Environmental Biotechnology, The University of Queensland, St. Lucia, Queensland 4072, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses challenges in the partial nitritation-anammox process, notably the suppression of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and excessive nitrate in effluents.
  • A new system, called partitioned granular sludge coupled with membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (G-MABR), was developed to improve nitrogen removal efficiency, achieving 88.8 to 93.6% removal rates.
  • This configuration effectively reduced NOB through competitive substrate use, allowing better synergy between denitrifying and anammox bacteria, which enhanced the overall nitrite supply for effective nitrogen removal.

SHU Center of Green Urban Mining & Industry Ecology, School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering, Shanghai University, No. 381 Nanchen Road, Shanghai 200444, P. R. China.

Vanadium-supported TiO is one of the most widely used catalysts. In previous reports, most researchers focused on the performance of a formed catalyst and almost no work was devoted to understanding the activation process from a precursor to a catalyst. In this work, differential scanning calorimetry was used to calculate the enthalpy change (Δ, kJ·mol) during the transition from a precursor to a catalyst.

Engineering Research Center of Advanced Rare-Earth Materials of Ministry of Education, Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China.

Selective activation of light alkanes is an essential reaction in the petrochemical industry for producing commodity chemicals, such as light olefins and aromatics. Because of the much higher intrinsic activities of noble metals in comparison to non-noble metals, it is desirable to employ solid catalysts with low noble metal loadings to reduce the cost of catalysts. Herein, we report the introduction of a tiny amount of Pt (at levels of hundreds of ppm) as a promoter of the GaO clusters encapsulated in ZSM-5 zeolite, which leads to ∼20-fold improvement in the activity for ethane dehydrogenation reaction.

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices, Institute of Laser Spectroscopy, Shanxi University, Taiyuan, China.

Bacteria are the primary cause of infectious diseases, making rapid and accurate identification crucial for timely pathogen diagnosis and disease control. However, traditional identification techniques such as polymerase chain reaction and loop-mediated isothermal amplification are complex, time-consuming, and pose infection risks. This study explores remote (~3 m) bacterial identification using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) with a Cassegrain reflective telescope.

Constructing CO-immune water dissociation sites around Pt to achieve stable operation in high CO concentration environment.

Nat Commun

September 2024

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, State Key Laboratory of Advanced Chemical Power Sources (SKL-ACPS), Chongqing University, Chongqing, China.

The serious problem of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning on the surface of Pt-based catalysts has long constrained the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Regeneration of Pt sites by maintaining CO scavenging ability through precise construction of the surface and interface structure of the catalyst is the key to obtaining high-performance CO-resistant catalysts. Here, we used molybdenum carbide (MoC) as the support for Pt and introduced Ru single atoms (SA-Ru) at the Pt-MoC interface to jointly decrease the CO adsorption strength on Pt.

Plastics, fibers and rubber are three mainstream synthetic materials that are essential to our daily lives and contribute significantly to the quality of our lives. The production of the monomers of these synthetic polymers usually involves oxidation or ammoximation reactions of olefins and analogues. However, the utilization of C, O and N atoms in current industrial processes is <80%, which represents the most environmentally polluting processes for the production of basic chemicals.

The interaction between Pt precursors and alumina support is an important step in synthesizing Pt/AlO catalysts, while an in-depth understanding of the interaction is still lacking. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to simulate the coordination of HPtCl with different surface hydroxyl groups, revealing the influence of the γ-AlO surface hydroxyl structure on the position of the Pt precursor and the removal of Cl ligands. After drying, the interaction mechanism between [PtCl] and alumina support involves hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces, which are the main driving forces for the structural transformation from [PtCl] coordinated with the surface hydroxyl group into the PtCl(OH) species (OH is the γ-AlO surface group).

Floatable Termination-Vacant MXene Architecture for High-Performance and Cost-Effective Photothermal Dehydrogenation.

Nano Lett

August 2024

School of Energy and Power Engineering, Key Laboratory of Ocean Energy Utilization and Energy Conservation of Ministry of Education, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China.

Liquid hydrogen carriers have garnered considerable interest in long-distance and large-scale hydrogen storage owing to their exceptional hydrogen storage density, safety, and compatibility. Nonetheless, their practical application is hampered by the low hydrogen production rate and high cost, stemming from poor thermal utilization and heavy reliance on noble metals in solar bulk dehydrogenation platforms. To conquer these challenges, we devise an economical all-in-one architecture comprising the photothermal catalytic termination-vacant MXene and a highly insulated melamine substrate.

The isomerization process of xylene in the liquid phase has garnered significant attention due to its low energy consumption and high selectivity. However, conventional ZSM-5 zeolites have exhibited significantly diminished activity in this process, primarily attributed to diffusion barriers. To address this issue, Nano-ZSM-5 zeolite was synthesized using tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) as a structure direct agent (SDA) and introducing silicate-1 (S-1) as a crystallization seed.

The Key Laboratory of Bioorganic Phosphorus Chemistry & Chemical Biology (Ministry of Education), Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University, Beijing, 100084, China.

Inspired by adaptive natural organisms and living matter, soft actuators appeal to a variety of innovative applications such as soft grippers, artificial muscles, wearable electronics, and biomedical devices. However, their fabrication is typically limited in laboratories or a few enterprises since specific instruments, strong stimuli, or specialized operation skills are inevitably involved. Here a straightforward "cloth-to-clothes-like" method to prepare soft actuators with a low threshold by combining the hysteretic behavior of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) with the exchange reaction of dynamic covalent bonds, is proposed.

The alkane cracking mechanism has been a subject of intense scrutiny, with carbonium and free radical mechanisms being two well-established pathways which correlate to solid acid catalysis and thermal cracking, respectively. However, despite an understanding of these two mechanisms, certain intricacies remain unexplored, especially when it comes to alternative reaction routes over solid base materials. This gap in the knowledge hinders optimization of the desired product selectivity of alkane cracking processes.

State Key Laboratory of Petroleum Molecular & Process Engineering, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Green Chemistry and Chemical Processes, School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, East China Normal University, Shanghai, 200062, PR China.

Coordination cages have been widely reported to bind a variety of guests, which are useful for chemical separation. Although the use of cages in the solid state benefits the recycling, the flexibility, dynamicity, and metal-ligand bond reversibility of solid-state cages are poor, preventing efficient guest encapsulation. Here we report a type of coordination cage-integrated solid materials that can be swelled into gel in water.
