J Hazard Mater

January 2025

Department of Occupational Health and Environmental Health, School of Public Health, Qingdao University, Qingdao, China. Electronic address:

Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate, an extensively used organophosphorus flame retardant in consumer products, has caused pervasive environmental contamination and increased human exposure, raising concerns about its cardiotoxic potential. However, the detailed toxicological profile, particularly concerning the crucial cardiac energy metabolism, and the precise mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study in C57BL/6 J mice exposed to TCEP for 36 days at varying doses revealed cardiac dysfunction, structural abnormalities, and hypoxia.

Clinical and epidemiological investigation of human infection with zoonotic parasite Trypanosoma dionisii in China.

J Infect

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of Pathogen and Biosecurity, Academy of Military Medical Science, Beijing 100071, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • A 30-year-old pregnant woman in Shandong Province, China, was diagnosed with a persistent high fever, and high-throughput sequencing identified the presence of the parasite Trypanosoma dionisii in her blood.
  • The patient showed symptoms like fever and respiratory issues but made a full recovery without long-term effects; genetic analysis revealed her infection was closely related to T. dionisii found in local bats.
  • This case highlights T. dionisii as a potential zoonotic pathogen, emphasizing the risk of its transmission from wildlife, particularly rodents and bats, to humans.

The triple crises of the COVID-19 pandemic, conflict and climate change have severely impacted food systems, leading to socio-economic consequences and undermining food and nutrition security across Africa. To address the malnutrition and poverty affecting approximately 700 million people in Africa, there is potential for the One Health approach implementation and operationalization to bring together multidisciplinary solutions for tackling food insecurity and ensuring food safety net. However, there is limited documentation on the potential of the One Health approach system thinking implementation to guide responses to triple crises-induced food insecurity.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential micronutrient required for various biological processes but excess exposure to Mn can cause neurotoxicity. However, there are few reports regarding the toxicity effect of Mn on the kidney as well as the underlying molecule mechanism. Herein, in vivo experiments were adopted to assess the toxicity effects associated with Mn, and found that chronic Mn treatment induced the injury of glomerular podocytes but not renal tubule in rats.

National Institute of Parasitic Disease, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Chinese Center for Tropical Disease Research), NHC Key Laboratory of Parasite and Vector Biology, WHO Collaborating Center for Tropical Disease, National Center for International Research on Tropical Disease, Shanghai 200025, China.

The goal of schistosomiasis prevention and control in China is shifting from transmission interruption to elimination. However, the area inhabited by the intermediate host, the snail , has not changed much in recent years. Different environmental types have different impacts on snail breeding, and understanding these differences is conducive to improving the efficiency of snail monitoring and control and to saving resources.

The construction of the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YEB) is a great national economic development strategy in China. As the YEB covers most endemic provinces of schistosomiasis japonica featured by low endemicity, this study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution pattern of (), which serves as the only intermediate host of in the YEB. Annual data reflecting the distribution of from 2015 to 2021 were collected from the National Institute of Parasitic Disease, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

infection induces hepatobiliary injury disturbing sphingolipid metabolism and activating sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor 2.

Front Cell Infect Microbiol

November 2022

Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Immunity and Metabolism, Laboratory of Infection and Immunity, Department of Pathogenic Biology and Immunology, Xuzhou Medical University, Xuzhou, China.

infection induces severe hepatobiliary injuries, which can cause inflammation, periductal fibrosis, and even cholangiocarcinoma. Sphingolipid metabolic pathways responsible for the generation of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) and its receptor S1P receptors (S1PRs) have been implicated in many liver-related diseases. However, the role of S1PRs in -mediated biliary epithelial cells (BECs) proliferation and hepatobiliary injury has not been elucidated.

October 2022

Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Immunity and Metabolism, Department of Pathogenic Biology and Immunology, National Demonstration Center for Experimental Basic Medical Science Education, Xuzhou Medical University, Xuzhou, People's Republic of China.

Background: Clonorchiasis caused by Clonorchis sinensis is a zoonotic parasitic disease characterized by cholangitis, biliary proliferation, biliary fibrosis, and even cholangiocarcinoma. Our previous study showed that the expression of interleukin (IL)-33 is increased in both humans and mice infected by C. sinensis, suggesting that IL-33 is potentially involved in the pathogenesis of clonorchiasis.

Schistosomiasis persists in Asian regions despite aggressive elimination measures. To identify factors enabling continued parasite transmission, we performed reduced representation genome sequencing on Schistosoma japonicum miracidia collected across multiple years from transmission hotspots in Sichuan, China. We discovered strong geographic structure, suggesting that local, rather than imported, reservoirs are key sources of persistent infections in the region.

Early diagnosis of trichinellosis is still difficult because of the lack of specific symptoms and limited window for serological detection. Here we established an assay based on tracing phosphate ions generated during loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) to detect Trichinella spiralis DNA in rat feces during its early stage of infection. By targeting a 1.

Since 2015 when the transmission of schistosomiasis was controlled in China, the country has been moving towards elimination of schistosomiasis, with the surveillanceresponse as the main interventions for schistosomiasis control. During the period of the 13th Five-Year Plan, the transmission of schistosomiasis had been interrupted in four provinces of Sichuan, Jiangsu, Yunnan and Hubei and the prevalence of schistosomiasis has been at the historically lowest level in China. As a consequence, the goal set in is almost achieved.

Genomic approaches hold great promise for resolving unanswered questions about transmission patterns and responses to control efforts for schistosomiasis and other neglected tropical diseases. However, the cost of generating genomic data and the challenges associated with obtaining sufficient DNA from individual schistosome larvae (miracidia) from mammalian hosts have limited the application of genomic data for studying schistosomes and other complex macroparasites. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing whole genome amplification and sequencing (WGS) to analyze individual archival miracidia.
