Allergic rhinitis (AR) is traditionally subdivided into seasonal AR (SAR) and perennial AR (PAR) according to the type of allergen and the occurrence of symptoms during the year. There are currently no reports on the comparison of trait profiles for SAR and PAR during the allergen exposure. The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics of SAR and PAR during respective allergen exposure periods to provide valuable information for the development of treatment strategies.

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan, 430060, Hubei Province, China; Research Institute of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Wuhan University, Wuhan, 430060, Hubei Province, China. Electronic address:

Studies have highlighted oxidative damage in the inner ear as a critical pathological basis for sensorineural hearing loss, especially the presbycusis. Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP1) activation responds to oxidative stress-induced DNA damage with pro-repair and pro-death effects resembling two sides of the same coin. PARP1-related cell death, known as parthanatos, whose underlying mechanisms are attractive research hotspots but remain to be clarified.

Fungal Plasma Membrane H-ATPase: Structure, Mechanism, and Drug Discovery.

J Fungi (Basel)

April 2024

Department of Biophysics, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Peking University, Beijing 100083, China.

The fungal plasma membrane H-ATPase (Pma1) pumps protons out of the cell to maintain the transmembrane electrochemical gradient and membrane potential. As an essential P-type ATPase uniquely found in fungi and plants, Pma1 is an attractive antifungal drug target. Two recent Cryo-EM studies on Pma1 have revealed its hexameric architecture, autoinhibitory and activation mechanisms, and proton transport mechanism.

Audiological Characteristics of Vestibular Schwannoma Patients With Normal Pure-Tone Audiometry.

Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

August 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Eye Ear Nose and Throat Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess audiological characteristics of vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients who had normal hearing results based on pure-tone audiometry (PTA).
  • It involved reviewing data from 42 VS patients over six years, focusing on various hearing tests such as auditory brainstem response (ABR) and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE).
  • Findings revealed that despite normal PTA, VS patients showed significant abnormalities in hearing tests, suggesting that normal PTA does not indicate the absence of hearing issues related to tumor size.

The Role of m6A-Mediated DNA Damage Repair in Tumor Development and Chemoradiotherapy Resistance.

Cancer Control

April 2024

Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine, The Affiliated Changsha Central Hospital, Hengyang Medical school, University of South China, Changsha, China.

Among the post-transcriptional modifications, m6A RNA methylation has gained significant research interest due to its critical role in regulating transcriptional expression. This modification affects RNA metabolism in several ways, including processing, nuclear export, translation, and decay, making it one of the most abundant transcriptional modifications and a crucial regulator of gene expression. The dysregulation of m6A RNA methylation-related proteins in many tumors has been shown to lead to the upregulation of oncoprotein expression, tumor initiation, proliferation, cancer cell progression, and metastasis.

Redundancy effect of initial enactment encoding and subsequent testing on memory enhancement: Insights from an electrophysiological study.

Brain Res

August 2024

Beijing Key Laboratory of Learning and Cognition, School of Psychology, Capital Normal University, No. 23 Baiduizijia, Fuwaidajie St, Haidian District, Beijin, China.

Testing is more beneficial for memory retention than restudying the same content. However, the effect of the initial encoding method on the testing effect remains unclear. In this study, a classical testing effect paradigm was employed, along with event-related potentials (ERP), to investigate the electrophysiological processes underlying the effect of enactment encoding on the testing effect.

Neurosci Bull

October 2024

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Drum Tower Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of the Medical School, Jiangsu Provincial Key Medical Discipline (Laboratory), Nanjing University, Nanjing, 210008, China.

Deafness is the prevailing sensory impairment among humans, impacting every aspect of one's existence. Half of congenital deafness cases are attributed to genetic factors. Studies have shown that Luzp2 is expressed in hair cells (HCs) and supporting cells of the inner ear, but its specific role in hearing remains unclear.

Hearing loss is the third most prevalent physical condition affecting communication, well-being, and healthcare costs. Sensorineural hearing loss often occurs first in the high-frequency region (basal turn), then towards the low-frequency region (apical turn). However, the mechanism is still unclear.

Background: Patients with age-related hearing loss (ARHL) often struggle with tracking and locating sound sources, but the neural signature associated with these impairments remains unclear.

Materials And Methods: Using a passive listening task with stimuli from five different horizontal directions in functional magnetic resonance imaging, we defined functional regions of interest (ROIs) of the auditory "where" pathway based on the data of previous literatures and young normal hearing listeners ( = 20). Then, we investigated associations of the demographic, cognitive, and behavioral features of sound localization with task-based activation and connectivity of the ROIs in ARHL patients ( = 22).
