Purpose: The foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area has been explored as a measure of macular ischemia in diabetic retinopathy (DR) but is limited by its wide variability even in healthy individuals. We hypothesized that FAZ enlargement, which we defined as the difference between the functional FAZ (on optical coherence tomography angiography; OCTA) and structural FAZ (en face OCT), may be a more accurate metric of macular ischemia. In this study, we test the hypothesis that FAZ enlargement is associated with decreased best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and low luminance visual acuity (LLVA) and performs better than the functional FAZ as a marker of vision loss.

Purpose: Although it is well known that photoreceptor damage and color vision loss occur in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR), the relationship between structural and functional changes in diabetes mellitus (DM) remains unclear. Using highly sensitive measures of photoreceptor structure and function, we aim to determine whether early loss of color sensitivity in DM is also accompanied by decreased cone density.
Methods: Monocular data from 26 patients with DM and 25 healthy controls were examined to assess cone photoreceptor metrics, using confocal adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopy, and red/green (RG) and yellow/blue (YB) color vision thresholds, using the Colour Assessment and Diagnosis test.

Eyelid pressure is a crucial biomechanical parameter for ocular health and refractive status, yet measuring it poses challenges related to flexibility, sensitivity, and regional specificity. This study introduces a novel smart contact lens that incorporates kirigami designs and an iontronic capacitive sensing array to enhance flexibility and conformability. The unique structural composition of this device allows for precise and simultaneous monitoring of eyelid pressure in multiple regions with a high sensitivity and seamlessly fit across corneal curvatures.

Purpose: To investigate the use of intravitreal bevacizumab for the treatment of subretinal (SRF) and intraretinal fluid associated with circumscribed choroidal haemangiomas (CCH).
Methods: This was a retrospective review of all patients treated with at least 3 bevacizumab injections for CCH-associated SRF between May 2020 and August 2023 in Moorfields eye hospital. Outcome measures included change in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), change in patient reported symptoms, change in SRF and change in central subfield thickness (CSFT).

Collodion baby is a rare congenital condition marked by a parchment-like membrane covering the body, often leading to complications such as bilateral ectropion. This condition poses risks of exposure keratopathy and other ocular issues. We present a case series of five infants with congenital bilateral ectropion associated with collodion babies, all born prematurely.

In recent years, patient-focused drug development (PFDD) has received widespread attention as a new paradigm in clinical trials. The PFDD emphasizes patients are partners in research projects, where patients can participate in research design, implementation, and outcome measurement, rather than just providing data. PFDD has shown great value in the research and development of pharmaceutical products, such as in accelerating the process of patient enrollment and improving the success rate of drug approval.

Importance: Predicting undesirable outcomes following anti-VEGF initiation in macular oedema is critical for effective clinical decision-making and optimised care.
Objective: To estimate the time to undesirable events in diabetic macular oedema (DMO), central and branch vein occlusions (CRVO and BRVO) after appropriate loading doses with either ranibizumab or aflibercept and identified baseline predictors of negative outcome.
Design, Setting, Participants: A retrospective cohort study of 3277 patients (N = 2107 in DMO, N = 413 in CRVO and N = 757 in BRVO) collected over a 10-year period, in a large UK tertiary centre.

Background: Severe dry eyes often require surgical intervention. Submandibular salivary and minor salivary gland transplantation are options for refractory dry eyes but have limitations. We innovatively designed an insular infraorbital neurovascular pedicle labial salivary gland transplantation (IINPLSGT) and validated its feasibility and safety through anatomical studies.

Oestradiol and progesterone levels are higher in menstruating women than men of the same age, and their receptors are present in their neurosensory retina and retinal pigment epithelium. However, the impact of this hormonal environment on retinal physiology in women remains unclear. Using self-reported menstrual cycle phases as a surrogate for fluctuating hormonal levels, we investigated associations with retinovascular indices on colour fundus photograph and retinal thickness in optical coherence tomography across regularly menstruating women in the UK Biobank.

To systematically review the characteristics of patients experiencing acute angle closure (AAC) attacks during the COVID-19 outbreak in Beijing. Patients with AAC attacks during the COVID-19 epidemic and those in the same period the following year were recruited. Demographic characteristics, ocular biometry, ocular signs, sequential relationships, and the prognosis of operative management outcome were recorded and compared between the 2 groups.

Carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) is a rare condition involving an abnormal communication between the carotid artery and the cavernous sinus. We present a unique case of posttraumatic unilateral CCF initially misdiagnosed as a corneal melt with iris prolapse and orbital cellulitis. The patient, a 25-year-old male, experienced swelling, bleeding, and sudden vision loss in the affected eye following a fall.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the values of hexagonality of endothelial cells among type-2 diabetics and nondiabetics. It also aimed at finding the correlation of the hexagonality of endothelial cells with the duration of diabetes, random blood sugar level, and severity of diabetic retinopathy in type-2 diabetics.
Materials And Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted for 8 months from January to August 2022.

Microphthalmia, anophthalmia and coloboma (MAC) comprise a highly heterogeneous spectrum of congenital ocular malformations with an estimated incidence of 1 in 5000 to 1 in 30 000 live births. Although there is likely to be a genetic component in the majority of cases, many remain without a molecular diagnosis. Netrin-1 was previously identified as a mediator of optic fissure closure from transcriptome analyses of chick and zebrafish and was shown to cause ocular coloboma when knocked out in both mouse and zebrafish.

Purpose: Inherited retinal disorders (IRD) are a complex group of conditions. By developing the first patient-reported experience measurement (PREM) questionnaire tailored for individuals with IRD participating in natural history studies, we gathered information on individuals' views of their experience while they are involved in research.
Methods: Adults with IRD who (i) were enrolled in a natural history study taking place at Moorfields Eye Hospital (London, UK), (ii) had attended at least two study visits, (iii) the most recent one being less than two weeks before the questionnaire, and (iv) who were not involved in interventional research, were considered for participation.
