Methods: In 1985, the open (dynamic) cohort started to collect information on diet, growth, development, and metabolism of healthy children and adolescents in Dortmund, Germany. Detailed data are collected annually during infancy, childhood, and adolescence of the participants, including a 3-day weighed dietary record, a 24-h urine sample, anthropometric and medical examinations as well as interviews on lifestyle.

The development of new analytical methods can save resources, time and costs if there are prediction tools like computer simulation which support the optimization process. In GC the distribution-centric 3-parameter model (K-centric model) is well established for prediction of retention factors k and retention times but laborious isothermal measurements for determination of the characteristic parameters are needed. In view of the poor acceptance of synthetic food colorants by consumers, there is intense interest in novel natural compounds, preferably from plant-derived sources. We oxidized chlorogenic acid using NaIO and reacted the resultant quinone with tryptophan (Trp) to obtain a red-colored product. The colorant was precipitated, freeze-dried, purified by size exclusion chromatography, and subsequently characterized using UHPLC-MS, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and NMR spectroscopy.

Tannins, anthocyanins, and polymeric pigments are essential phenolic constituents of red wine because they provide color, color stability, and mouthfeel properties like astringency. The behavior of these compounds is significantly affected by pectic polysaccharides, whereby the extent of their influence on red wine quality depends on their structural features and their interactions with the polyphenols. In the present study, the composition of the pectic polysaccharides of commercially available Cabernet Sauvignon wines and their impact on anthocyanin, tannin, and polymeric pigment analyses was characterized.

Estimation of retention parameters from temperature programmed gas chromatography.

A fast and reliable method is presented to evaluate retention parameters of the distribution-centric 3-parameter model from temperature programed gas chromatographic measurements. Based on a fully differentiable model of the migration of solutes in a gas chromatographic (GC) system, Newton's method with a trust region is used to determine the three parameters, respectively the three parameters and the column diameter, of several solutes as the minima of the difference between measured and calculated retention times. The determined retention parameters can then be used in method development, using the simulation of GC separation.

Although we have sent humans into space for more than 50 years crucial questions regarding kidney physiology, volume regulation and osmoregulation remain unanswered. The complex interactions between the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, the sympathetic nervous system, osmoregulatory responses, glomerular function, tubular function, and environmental factors such as sodium and water intake, motion sickness and ambient temperature make it difficult to establish the exact effect of microgravity and the subsequent fluid shifts and muscle mass loss on these parameters. Unfortunately, not all responses to actual microgravity can be reproduced with head-down tilt bed rest studies, which complicates research on Earth.

The effects of naringenin and the biflavonoids amentoflavone and tetrahydroamentoflavone on select bacterial lipids (carotenoids, fatty acids, and menaquinones) and membrane fluidity based on Laurdan generalized polarization were investigated. For this purpose, the pigment-forming food-associated microorganisms Staphylococcus xylosus (DSM 20266 and J70), Staphylococcus carnosus DSM 20501, and Micrococcus luteus (ATCC 9341 and J3) were studied. The results suggest an envelope stress response by microorganisms due to flavonoids and an employment of adaptive mechanisms using carotenoids, fatty acids, and menaquinones.

Young adults with a later chronotype are vulnerable for a discrepancy in sleep rhythm between work- and free days, called social jet lag (SJL). This study analysed (i) chronotype/SJL association with visceral fat/skeletal muscle mass, (ii) the attribution to physical activity behaviour, and (iii) chronotype-specific changes in physical activity behaviour in young adults during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. Chronotype and SJL were derived from the Munich-Chrono-Type-Questionnaire in 320 German students (age 18-25 years) from September 2019 to January 2020, 156 of these participated in an online follow-up survey in June 2020.

Selenium is a non-essential element with beneficial and toxic effects on plants, whose exact role in plant physiology leaves many unanswered questions. Various species of hydroponically grown plants produce defined selenium nano particles (SeNP) with a narrow size distribution and about 2 million selenium atoms by biosynthesis when being exposed to selenite, proving that green synthesis of SeNP is not only possible in plants extracts, but also in living organisms. The detection was performed with single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.
