In its climate protection law, Germany pursues the aim of achieving greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) hold gene regulatory potential, but require substantial further functional annotation in livestock. Applying two metabogenomic approaches by combining transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses, we aimed to identify lncRNAs with potential regulatory function for divergent nutrient partitioning of lactating crossbred cows and to establish metabogenomic interaction networks comprising metabolites, genes and lncRNAs. Through correlation analysis of lncRNA expression with transcriptomic and metabolomic data, we unraveled lncRNAs that have a putative regulatory role in energy and lipid metabolism, the urea and tricarboxylic acid cycles, and gluconeogenesis.

Protein imbalance during pregnancy affects women in underdeveloped and developing countries and is associated with compromised offspring growth and an increased risk of metabolic diseases in later life. We studied in a porcine model the glucose and urea metabolism, and circulatory hormone and metabolite profile of offspring exposed during gestation, to maternal isoenergetic low-high (LP-HC), high-low (HP-LC) or adequate (AP) protein-carbohydrate ratio diets. At birth, LP-HC were lighter and the plasma acetylcarnitine to free carnitine ratios at 1 day of life was lower compared to AP offspring.

Fatty acids are known for their regulatory role in inflammation and oxidative stress. The present study investigated 38 calves born from dams, abomasally supplemented with coconut oil, essential fatty acids (EFA), conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) or EFA + CLA, according to immunological traits and the oxidative and anti-oxidative status for the first 5 days of life. Holstein dairy calves were fed either colostrum (COL; n = 7) or milk-based formula (FOR; n = 7) with comparable nutrient composition but lower contents of several bioactives in the formula than in the respective colostrum group until d 4 of life. Following infection, the parasites reside in the ceca and are excreted via host feces. In the present work, male birds of conventional broiler (Ross 308, R), layer (Lohmann Brown Plus, LB) and a dual-purpose (Lohmann Dual, LD) chicken line were infected with 250 embryonated eggs of Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum, respectively, with the latter nematode harboring Histomonas meleagridis, to investigate a co-infection of nematodes with the protozoan parasite in different host lines.
