Introduction: Prion diseases are slow-acting, neurodegenerative diseases found in humans and many species of animals. Although they occur very rarely in humans, currently, an increase in this type of disease is being observed, probably as a result of exposure to infectious prions causing BSE disease in cows.
Objective: The aim of the procedures described in the article is to minimize the risk of human-to-human transfer of all forms of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, including variant CJD (vCJD) by contaminated medical equipment.

BACKGROUND Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare, non-infectious, fulminant dermatosis of the skin. The lack of objective diagnostic criteria requires differential diagnosis and exclusion of extensive ulcerative skin diseases. Currently, treatment includes a combination of systemic steroids, immunosuppressants, and topical agents, but after decades of research, no clear scientific evidence exists for a criterion standard treatment.

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited form of mitochondrial optic nerve degeneration with bilateral optic atrophy. Its coexistence with multiple sclerosis (MS)-like disease (LHON-MS) is rare and also known as Harding's syndrome. The presence of LHON-MS complicates the diagnosis of optic neuritis associated with MS, which can delay the correct diagnosis and necessary treatment.

This study aimed to investigate the changes in the total polyphenolic content and antioxidant properties after subjecting Pink Rock Rose () leaves to three different drying procedures, including convection drying (CD) at 40, 50 and 60 °C; vacuum-microwave drying (VMD) at 240 W microwave power; and combined drying consisting of convective pre-drying at 50 °C followed by vacuum-microwave finish drying at 240 W microwave power (CPD-VMFD). The total polyphenolic content and antioxidant properties (DPPH, ABTS) of leaves subjected to these three drying methods were spectrophotometrically determined. The results show that convection drying at 40 °C and vacuum-microwave drying yielded dried leaves with the highest bioactive potential in terms of the total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity, with the highest and lowest values of final specific energy consumption, respectively.

Background: Higher concentrations of single perfluorinated alkyl acids (PFAAs) have been associated with lower birth weight (BW), but few studies have examined the combined effects of PFAA mixtures. PFAAs have been reported to induce estrogen receptor (ER) transactivity, and estrogens may influence human fetal growth. We hypothesize that mixtures of PFAAs may affect human fetal growth by disrupting the ER.
