Motivated by the losses of runaway electrons during disruptive events in present and future tokamaks like the ITER, we investigate the transport in mixed phase space Hamiltonian systems. We are interested in the regime where the sticky regions, remaining after the disintegration of invariant transport barriers, form layers in the phase space separated by partial barriers to transport. The example we use is the standard map.

Background And Purpose: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is routinely used in radiotherapy to localize target volume. The aim of our study was to determine the biological effects of CBCT dose compared to subsequent therapeutic dose by using in vitro chromosome dosimetry.
Materials And Methods: Peripheral blood samples from five healthy volunteers were irradiated in two phantoms (water filled in-house made cylindrical, and Pure Image CTDI phantoms) with 6 MV FFF X-ray photons, the dose rate was 800 MU/min and the absorbed doses ranged from 0.

Electricity supply in European countries faces a number of challenges, such as achieving carbon neutrality, tackling rising prices, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, including fossil fuel imports. To achieve these goals, the electricity systems of all European countries will have to undergo major changes, while taking into account technical, environmental, economic and social objectives. Our simulations provide essential data for this transition by analyzing different power plant portfolios and electricity consumption scenarios.

Computing the emerging flow in blood vessel sections by means of computational fluid dynamics is an often applied practice in hemodynamics research. One particular area for such investigations is related to the cerebral aneurysms, since their formation, pathogenesis, and the risk of a potential rupture may be flow-related. We present a study on the behavior of small advected particles in cerebral vessel sections in the presence of aneurysmal malformations.

Varian Halcyon (HA) linear accelerators (LINAC) require kilovoltage cone-beam computed tomography (CT) acquisition for all patients before all treatment fractions. The aim of this study is to compare dose indices of various available protocols with different calculation and measurement methods. CT dose index (CTDI) in mGy is a measure of the radiation dose output of a CT scanner.

Background: The purpose of the study was to dosimetrically compare multicatheter interstitial brachytherapy (MIBT) and stereotactic radiotherapy with CyberKnife (CK) for accelerated partial breast irradiation with special focus on dose to organs at risk (OARs).
Materials And Methods: Treatment plans of thirty-one patients treated with MIBT were selected and additional CK plans were created on the same CT images. The OARs included ipsilateral non-target and contralateral breast, ipsilateral and contralateral lung, skin, ribs, and heart for left sided cases.

Due to their robustness and speed, recently developed deep learning-based methods have the potential to provide a faster and hence more scalable alternative to more conventional neuroimaging analysis pipelines in terms of whole-brain segmentation based on magnetic resonance (MR) images. These methods were also shown to have higher test-retest reliability, raising the possibility that they could also exhibit superior head motion tolerance. We investigated this by comparing the effect of head motion-induced artifacts in structural MR images on the consistency of segmentation performed by FreeSurfer and recently developed deep learning-based methods to a similar extent.

An optimized micro-X-ray fluorescence confocal imaging (μXRF-CI) analytical method has been developed to determine the 2D distribution of elemental composition in small (1-3 mm) biological objects at a 10-20 μm spatial resolution. Plants take up chemical elements from soil, and the vascular system transports them toward shoots. In order to obtain biochemical information related to this biological process, 2D distributions of chemical elements in roots and in hypocotyls of cucumber plants were analyzed by synchrotron radiation based on micro-X-ray fluorescence computer tomography and μXRF-CI techniques.

Purpose: Automatizing the scoring of the cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus assay spares a lot of valuable time. The dose-effect relationship can be applied reliably for dose estimation if the quality of the slides is the same from the perspective of the used image processing algorithm. This aspect brings in additional requirements against the quality of the slides compared to the conventional visual scoring.

The objective of the study was the construction of a generic curriculum development model for the use of biomedical physics (BMP) educators teaching the non-physics healthcare professions (HCP) in Europe. A comprehensive, qualitative cross-sectional Europe-wide survey of the curricula delivered by BMP in Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) was carried out. Curricular content was collected from faculty web-sites, curricular documents and textbooks.

The European Spallation Source (ESS) is intended to become the most powerful spallation neutron source in the world and the flagship of neutron science in upcoming decades. The exceptionally high neutron flux will provide unique opportunities for scientific experiments but also set high requirements for the detectors. One of the most challenging aspects is the rate capability and in particular the peak instantaneous rate capability, the number of neutrons hitting the detector per channel or cm at the peak of the neutron pulse.

The neutron activation of shielding materials and the generated decay gamma radiation are well-known issues in terms of occupational exposure. Though the trace elements of shielding concretes can be dominant sources of the produced activity in such cases, their concentrations are often missing from the input data of shielding-related Monte Carlo simulations. For this reason, three concrete types were studied, that were considered in the European Spallation Source (ESS) ERIC.

Our aim was to design a compact and cost-effective optical microscopic system for automated non-fluorescent micronucleus (MN) scoring whose performance can reach the accuracy of visual scoring with the help of minimal user interaction and also gives an option for fully automatic scoring with an accuracy suitable for triage purposes. The concept of Radometer MN-Series (RS-MN) microscopic system designed by Radosys was to develop hardware and software layers in parallel in order to optimize the performance in automated MN scoring. A MN assay slide is automatically scanned by the RS-MN then the binucleated cells and micronuclei are automatically identified.

Background In emission tomography maximum likelihood expectation maximization reconstruction technique has replaced the analytical approaches in several applications. The most important drawback of this iterative method is its linear rate of convergence and the corresponding computational burden. Therefore, simplifications are usually required in the Monte Carlo simulation of the back projection step.

The in vivo biodistribution of liposomal formulations greatly influences the pharmacokinetics of these novel drugs; therefore the radioisotope labeling of liposomes and the use of nuclear imaging methods for in vivo studies are of great interest. In the present work, a new procedure for the surface labeling of liposomes is presented using the novel Tc-tricarbonyl complex. Liposomes mimicking the composition of two FDA approved liposomal drugs were used.
