Size of silver nanoparticles determines proliferation ability of human circulating lymphocytes in vitro.

In this work we present biological effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized by picosecond laser ablation of silver in deionized water. We examined induction of chromosomal aberrations, lymphocyte micronuclei, appearance and recovery of double strand breaks (DSBs) of DNA, cell proliferation potential, concentration of lipid peroxidation products and insulin-like growth factor 1 (ILGF-1). We found that AgNPs sized from 3 nm to 8 nm induce cell cytostasis, which is accompanied with its clastogenic action on DNA, while AgNPs, sized 2 nm behaves contrary stimulating cell proliferation by enhancing ILGF-1 concentration.

Subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) is characterized by a mildly elevated concentration of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) despite free thyroxine (FT4) and triiodothyronine (FT3) levels within the reference range. Numerous studies revealed SH to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), including atherosclerosis, congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, ischemic heart disease and the associated mortality. The relationship between SH and CVD is well documented, but the molecular mechanism underlying this correlation remain unknown.

Imidazoline I1 receptor signaling is associated with pathways that regulate cell viability leading to varied cell-type specific phenotypes. We demonstrated that the antihypertensive drug rilmenidine, a selective imidazoline I1 receptor agonist, modulates proliferation and stimulates the proapoptotic protein Bax thus inducing the perturbation of the mitochondrial pathway and apoptosis in human leukemic K562 cells. Rilmenidine acts through a mechanism which involves deactivation of Ras/MAP kinases ERK, p38 and JNK.

The present study attempted to investigate how chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) and repeated low-dose progesterone (P) treatment affect gene and protein expression, subcellular distribution of key apoptotic elements within protein kinase B (Akt) and extracellular signal-regulated kinases (Erk) signal transduction pathways, as well as neurodegenerative processes and behavior. The results revealed the absence of Erk activation in CCH in cytosolic and synaptosomal fractions, indicating a lower threshold of Akt activation in brain ischemia, while P increased their levels above control values. CCH induced an increase in caspase 3 (Casp 3) and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) gene and protein expression.

Variance of radon concentration in dwelling atmosphere is analysed with regard to geogenic and anthropogenic influencing factors. Analysis includes review of 81 national and regional indoor radon surveys with varying sampling pattern, sample size and duration of measurements and detailed consideration of two regional surveys (Sverdlovsk oblast, Russia and Niška Banja, Serbia). The analysis of the geometric standard deviation revealed that main factors influencing the dispersion of indoor radon concentration over the territory are as follows: area of territory, sample size, characteristics of measurements technique, the radon geogenic potential, building construction characteristics and living habits.

High frequency of p16 and p14 promoter hypermethylation and marked telomere instability in salivary gland tumors.

Objectives: to investigate p16(INK4a) and p14(ARF) tumor suppressor gene methylation status, determine telomere length and assess the importance of these epigenetic and genetic parameters in the development of pleomorphic adenoma and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid salivary glands.

Materials And Methods: Genomic DNA from paraffin-embedded samples of 50 pleomorphic adenomas and 10 carcinomas ex pleomorphic adenoma was subjected to methylation specific polymerase chain reaction for hypermethylation analyses and real time polymerase chain reaction for the relative telomere length calculations.

Results: Promoter hypermethylation of the two genes was a very frequent event in both neoplasms - between 60% and 90% of samples were hypermethylated - but without significant difference between the groups.

This paper aims to provide an overview of the polyelectrolyte model and the current understanding of the creation and propagation of localized pulses of positive ions flowing along cellular microtubules. In that context, Ca(2+) ions may move freely on the surface of microtubule along the protofilament axis, thus leading to signal transport. Special emphasis in this paper is placed on the possible role of this mechanism in the function of microtubule based kinocilium, a component of vestibular hair cells of the inner ear.

Long-term measurements of radon, thoron and their airborne progeny in 25 schools in Republic of Srpska.

This article reports results of the first investigations on indoor radon, thoron and their decay products concentration in 25 primary schools of Banja Luka, capital city of Republic Srpska. The measurements have been carried out in the period from May 2011 to April 2012 using 3 types of commercially available nuclear track detectors, named: long-term radon monitor (GAMMA 1)- for radon concentration measurements (C(Rn)); radon-thoron discriminative monitor (RADUET) for thoron concentration measurements (C(Tn)); while equilibrium equivalent radon concentration (EERC) and equilibrium equivalent thoron concentrations (EETC) measured by Direct Radon Progeny Sensors/Direct Thoron Progeny Sensors (DRPS/DTPS) were exposed in the period November 2011 to April 2012. In each school the detectors were deployed at 10 cm distance from the wall.

The large 2014/2015 Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa points out the urgent need to develop new preventive and therapeutic approaches that are effective against Ebola viruses and  can be rapidly utilized. Recently, a simple theoretical criterion for the virtual screening of molecular libraries for candidate inhibitors of Ebola virus infection was proposed. Using this method the 'drug space' was screened and 267 approved and 382 experimental drugs as candidates for treatment of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) have been selected.

Newly emerging influenza A viruses (IAV) pose a major threat to human health by causing seasonal epidemics and/or pandemics, the latter often facilitated by the lack of pre-existing immunity in the general population. Methods for photoacoustic signal measurement, rectification, and analysis for 85 μm thin Si samples in the 20-20 000 Hz modulation frequency range are presented. Methods for frequency-dependent amplitude and phase signal rectification in the presence of coherent and incoherent noise as well as distortion due to microphone characteristics are presented. Signal correction is accomplished using inverse system response functions deduced by comparing real to ideal signals for a sample with well-known bulk parameters and dimensions.

Disturbance in blood circulation is associated with numerous pathological conditions characterized by cognitive decline and neurodegeneration. The ongoing Ebola virus epidemic has presented numerous challenges with respect to control and treatment because there are no approved drugs or vaccines for the Ebola virus disease (EVD). Herein is proposed simple theoretical criterion for fast virtual screening of molecular libraries for candidate inhibitors of Ebola virus infection. We performed a repurposing screen of 6438 drugs from DrugBank using this criterion and selected 267 approved and 382 experimental drugs as candidates for treatment of EVD including 15 anti-malarial drugs and 32 antibiotics.

Differential regulation of catecholamine synthesis and transport in rat adrenal medulla by fluoxetine treatment.

We have recently shown that chronic fluoxetine treatment acted significantly increasing plasma norepinephrine and epinephrine concentrations both in control and chronically stressed adult male rats. However, possible effects of fluoxetine on catecholamine synthesis and re-uptake in adrenal medulla have been largely unknown. In the present study the effects of chronic fluoxetine treatment on tyrosine hydroxylase, a rate-limiting enzyme in catecholamine synthesis, as well as a norepinephrine transporter and vesicular monoamine transporter 2 gene expressions in adrenal medulla of animals exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for 4 weeks, were investigated.
