Influenza A virus (IAV) subtypes against which little or no pre-existing immunity exists in humans represent a serious threat to global public health. Monitoring of IAV in animal hosts is essential for early and rapid detection of potential pandemic IAV strains to prevent their spread. Recently, the increased pandemic potential of the avian-like swine H1N1 IAV A/swine/Guangdong/104/2013 has been suggested.

Fullerenol (C(OH)) is present in aqueous solutions in the form of polyanion nanoparticles with particles' size distribution within the range from 15 to 42 nm. In this research it is assumed that these features could enable fullerenol nanoparticles (FNPs) to bind positively charged molecules like doxorubicin (DOX) and serve as drug carriers. Considering this, fullerenol/doxorubicin nanocomposite (FNP/DOX) is formed and characterized by ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.

Background: Overexpression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is a key link between high-fat (HF) diet induced obesity and cardiovascular disease. Oestradiol has cardioprotective effects that may be mediated through reduction of iNOS activity/expression.
Methods: In the present study, female Wistar rats were fed a standard diet or a HF diet (42% fat) for 10 weeks.

We present herein a case report style article on a rare advanced triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patient with 6-month disease-free interval, and 10-month overall survival. Our results demonstrate that the poor clinical outcome of this patient was associated with pronounced, more than fivefold higher, overexpression of both cFOS and TGF-β1 proteins in its metastatic nodal tissue extracts, when compared with the values of the two non-TNBC controls (with 'zero' disease-free interval and overall survival). This original observation suggests, for the first time, that both the cFOS and TGF-β1 may be considered as a pair of biomarkers for an early assessment of poor prognosis for TNBC patients.

Purpose: To determine various clinical, radiographic, and pathological parameters which may indicate an increased risk of Giant cell tumour of bone (GCTB) recurrence after surgical therapy.
Methods: The study included a total of 164 GCTB samples; 118 (72 %) primary tumours, and 46 (28 %) recurrences; which were analyzed on immunohistochemistry for expression of Ki67, p53, cyclin D1, and β-catenin.
Results: Among 13 analyzed clinical, radiological, and histological variables, which presented possible predictive factors for the incidence of GCTB relapse, univariate logistic regression (ULR) extract three highly statistically significant parameters: 1) lesion localization, 2) nuclear p53 expression in mononuclear cells, and 3) nuclear cyclin D1 expression in giant multinuclear cells.

Background: A major bottleneck in our understanding of the molecular underpinnings of life is the assignment of function to proteins. While molecular experiments provide the most reliable annotation of proteins, their relatively low throughput and restricted purview have led to an increasing role for computational function prediction. However, assessing methods for protein function prediction and tracking progress in the field remain challenging.

The hippocampus is sensitive to stress which activates norepinephrine terminals deriving from the locus coeruleus. Melatonin exerts positive effects on the hippocampal neurogenic process and on depressive-like behaviour. Thus, in the present study, an examination was made of the effect of chronic melatonin treatment on norepinephrine content, synthesis, uptake, vesicular transport and degradation in the hippocampus of rats exposed to CUMS.

The mechanical and electrical properties, and information processing capabilities of microtubules are the permanent subject of interest for carrying out experiments in vitro and in silico, as well as for theoretical attempts to elucidate the underlying processes. In this paper, we developed a new model of the mechano-electrical waves elicited in the rows of very flexible C-terminal tails which decorate the outer surface of each microtubule. The fact that C-terminal tails play very diverse roles in many cellular functions, such as recruitment of motor proteins and microtubule-associated proteins, motivated us to consider their collective dynamics as the source of localized waves aimed for communication between microtubule and associated proteins.

Two new dinuclear bimetallic complexes, [{PdCl(bipy)}{μ-(pyrazine)}{PtCl(bipy)}]Cl(ClO4) (1) (bipy is 2,2'-bipyridine) and [{PdCl(en)}{μ-(pyrazine)}{PtCl(en)}]Cl(ClO4) (2) (en is ethylenediamine), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental microanalysis, IR, (1)H NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The pKa values of the coordinated water molecules of the diaqua species were determined as well. Substitution reactions of complexes (1) and (2) with thiourea (Tu), l-methionine (l-Met), l-cysteine (l-Cys), l-histidine (l-His) and guanosine-5'-monophosphate (5'-GMP) were studied under the pseudo-first order conditions as a function of nucleophile concentration and temperature.

Air sample monitoring in Serbia, Belgrade started in the 1960s, while (7)Be activity in air and total (dry and wet) deposition has been monitored for the last 22 years by the Environment and Radiation Protection Department of the Institute for Nuclear Sciences, Vinca. Using this data collection, the changes of the (7)Be activity in the air and the total (wet and dry) deposition samples, as well as their correlation with meteorological parameters (temperature, pressure, cloudiness, sunshine duration, precipitation and humidity) that affect (7)Be concentration in the atmosphere, were mathematically described using the Fourier analysis. Fourier analysis confirmed the expected; the frequency with the largest intensity in the harmonic spectra of the (7)Be activity corresponds to a period of 1 year, the same as the largest intensity frequency in Fourier series of meteorological parameters.

The clonidine-like central antihypertensive agent rilmenidine, which has high affinity for I1-type imidazoline receptors (I1-IR) was recently found to have cytotoxic effects on cultured cancer cell lines. However, due to its pharmacological effects resulting also from α2-adrenoceptor activation, rilmenidine cannot be considered a suitable anticancer drug candidate. Here, we report the identification of novel rilmenidine-derived compounds with anticancer potential and devoid of α2-adrenoceptor effects by means of ligand- and structure-based drug design approaches.

Inspired by an early work of Muldoon et al., Physica D 65, 1-16 (1993), we present a general method for constructing simplicial complex from observed time series of dynamical systems based on the delay coordinate reconstruction procedure. The obtained simplicial complex preserves all pertinent topological features of the reconstructed phase space, and it may be analyzed from topological, combinatorial, and algebraic aspects.

Various stressors may disrupt the redox homeostasis of an organism by causing oxidative and nitrosative stress that may activate stressor-specific pathways and provoke specific responses. Chronic social isolation (CSIS) represents a mild chronic stress that evokes a variety of neurobehavioral changes in rats similar to those observed in people with psychiatric disorders, including depression. Most rodent studies have focused on the effect of social isolation during weaning or adolescence, while its effect in adult rats has not been extensively examined.

Background: The pathophysiological overlapping between Sjorgen's Syndrome (SS) and HCV, presence of anti- muscarinic receptor type 3 (M3R) antibodies in SS, the role that M3R plays in the regulation of the heart rate, has led to the assumption that cardiovagal dysfunction in HCV patients is caused by anti-M3R antibodies elicited by HCV proteins or by their direct interaction with M3R.
Results: To identify HCV protein which possibly is crossreactive with M3R or which binds to this receptor, we performed the Informational Spectrum Method (ISM) analysis of the HCV proteome. This analysis revealed that NS5A protein represents the most probable interactor of M3R or that this viral protein could elicit antibodies which modulate function of this receptor.

Classical Poincaré plot is a standard way to measure nonlinear regulation of cardiovascular control. In our work we propose a generalized form of Poincaré plot where we track correlation between the duration of j preceding and k next RR intervals. The investigation was done in healthy subjects and patients with atrial fibrillation, by varying j,k ≤ 100.
