The human visual system is constantly processing multiple and often conflicting sensory cues to make perceptual decisions. Given the nonlinear nature of emotion recognition, this often leads to different percepts of the same physical facial expression. Moreover, the state of the emotion recognition system might depend on the trajectory of temporal context, potentially leading to a phenomenon known as perceptual hysteresis.

Hysteresis is a well-known phenomenon in physics that relates changes in a system with its prior history. It is also part of human visual experience (perceptual hysteresis), and two different neural mechanisms might explain it: persistence (a cause of positive hysteresis), which forces to keep a current percept for longer, and adaptation (a cause of negative hysteresis), which in turn favors the switch to a competing percept early on. In this study, we explore the neural correlates underlying these mechanisms and the hypothesis of their competitive balance, by combining behavioral assessment with fMRI.

Purpose: Patients with Parkinson's and Huntington's Disease (PD and HD) present impairments in cognitively challenging everyday activities. This study contrasts these two basal ganglia disorders on the ability to perform daily life- like tasks and their level of awareness regarding the disease impact on function.
Methods: 19 controls, 10 early-onset PD, 20 early stage PD, and 15 early manifest HD patients were compared in the "EcoKitchen," a virtual reality task with increasing executive load, the "Behavioural Assessment of Dysexecutive Syndrome battery - BADS," and "The Adults and Older Adults Functional Assessment Inventory - IAFAI," a self-report functional questionnaire.

Brain stimulation techniques, including transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), were identified as promising therapeutic tools to modulate synaptic plasticity abnormalities and minimize memory and learning deficits in many neuropsychiatric diseases. Here, we revised the effect of tDCS on the modulation of neuroplasticity and cognition in several animal disease models of brain diseases affecting plasticity and cognition. Studies included in this review were searched following the terms ("transcranial direct current stimulation") AND (mice OR mouse OR animal) and according to the PRISMA statement requirements.

Recent studies have reported on the feasibility of real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI) neurofeedback (NF) training. Although modulation of blood oxygenation level-dependent signal of single brain regions in rt-fMRI NF is a well established technique, the same does not hold true for modulation of connectivity. Self-modulation of interregional connectivity is a potential alternative in clinical neuroscience applications, since long-range functional dysconnectivity is being increasingly recognized as a mechanism underlying neuropsychiatric disorders.

A top priority in biomarker development for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) is the focus on early diagnosis, where the use of the retina is a promising avenue of research. We computed fundus images from optical coherence tomography (OCT) data and analysed the structural arrangement of the retinal tissue using texture metrics. Purpose: For the past 2 decades, neuroimaging studies in dyslexia have pointed toward a hypoactivation of the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC), a region that has been closely associated to reading through the extraction of a representation of words which is invariant to position, size, font or case. However, most of the studies are confined to the visual word form area (VWFA), while recent studies have demonstrated a posterior-to-anterior gradient of print specificity along the VOTC. In our study, the whole VOTC, partitioned into three main patches of cortex, is assessed in dyslexic and control adults.

The superior temporal sulcus (STS) encompasses a complex set of regions involved in a wide range of cognitive functions. To understand its functional properties, neuromodulation approaches such brain stimulation or neurofeedback can be used. Visual adaptation describes the processes by which the visual system alters its operating properties in response to changes in the environment. It is one of the mechanisms controlling visual perceptual bistability - when two perceptual solutions are available - by controlling the duration of each percept. The nature of neurochemical changes in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains controversial. We compared medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) neurochemistry of twenty high-functioning children and adolescents with ASD without associated comorbidities and fourteen controls. We observed reduced total N-acetylaspartate (tNAA) and total creatine, increased Glx/tNAA but unchanged glutamate + glutamine (Glx) and unchanged absolute or relative gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA+) in the ASD group.

Retinitis Pigmentosa is a group of hereditary retinal dystrophy disorders associated with progressive peripheral visual field loss. The impact of this retinal loss in cortical gray matter volume has not been addressed before in Retinitis Pigmentosa patients with low vision. Voxel-based morphometry was applied to study whole brain gray matter volume changes in 27 Retinitis Pigmentosa patients with partially preserved vision and 38 age- and gender-matched normally sighted controls to determine whether peripheral visual loss can lead to changes in gray matter volume.
