Thyroid hormone profiles were determined in two groups of dogs made uremic, either by i.v. uranyl nitrate 10 mg/kg BW injection or by bilateral ureteral ligation, and in one group of sham-operated animals.

beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2M) is a small molecular mass protein associated with dialysis amyloidosis. We have studied beta 2M elimination in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients treated by peritoneal dialysis. In 12 patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and 7 patients on intermittent peritoneal dialysis (IPD) 30.

The aim of this study was to investigate serum levels, urinary excretion and in vitro peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) production of beta 2-microglobulin in patients with Balkan nephropathy and their families. Increased urinary beta 2-microglobulin excretion was found in Balkan nephropathy, chronic pyelonephritis and glomerulonephritis patients, being highest in the first group. The serum level of beta 2-microglobulin in Balkan nephropathy patients correlated with residual kidney function.

We studied the urinary excretion of total protein and five other proteins in urine samples from a total of 831 children and adolescents. The characteristics of the children were: (1.) they resided in areas where Balkan nephropathy (BEN) is endemic and also had family members suffering from BEN; (2.

Circadian rhythms of urinary phosphate excretion in 13 supine and 8 ambulatory kidney graft recipients in the late post-transplant period were studied. A comparison of serum phosphate level and urinary phosphate excretion revealed two groups of patients: a) with normal serum phosphate level and a high urinary phosphate excretion, and b) patients with subnormal serum phosphate and a moderate phosphate excretion. Compared to control group of 9 healthy volunteers much greater variations in phosphate and cyclic 3',5'-AMP excretion in grafted patients were recorded.

Deranged adrenal cortical function was previously described in different stress situations. The aim of this work was to study the plasma cortisol and aldosterone levels in acute renal failure induced by the uranyl nitrate injection or bilateral ureteral ligation. In both groups of uremic dogs on the first day of uremia there was a significant elevation of the plasma cortisol level, being more pronounced and lasting longer after bilateral ureteral ligation.

The effect of secondary hyperparathyroidism upon hormones of the pituitary testicular axis was studied in 39 end-stage kidney disease male patients on maintenance hemodialysis. In hemodialysed patients the mean serum levels of PTH, prolactin and LH were significantly increased, that of testosterone decreased, and of FSH unchanged. PTH and prolactin values were found to be dependent upon residual renal function measured by 24 h urine output.

In dogs made uremic by bilateral ureteral ligation or by uranyl nitrate injection the serum testosterone levels were investigated. In both experimental models of acute renal failure a profound decrease of serum testosterone was found. The relationship between serum iPTH and testosterone levels was also investigated.

Plasma calcium regulation in uranyl nitrate-treated dogs was studied. A discrete hypercalcemia was observed without significant changes in the level of plasma ionized calcium. Serum phosphate increased markedly following uranyl nitrate treatment.
