Several studies reported that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use could alleviate subclinical effects of short-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM). However, whether chronic NSAID use could mitigate the long-term effects of PM and its components on population mortality has been unknown. Based on a national representative survey of 47,086 adults (2007-2010) with follow-up information on the primary cause of death (until 2017), we investigated the long-term associations of PM and its major components, including black carbon (BC), ammonium (NH ), nitrate (NO ), organic matter (OM), and sulfate (SO ), with all-cause and cause-specific mortality using the Cox proportional hazards model.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) involves a series of syndromes characterized by a rapid increase in creatinine levels. Ferroptosis, as an iron-dependent mode of programmed cell death, reportedly participates in the pathogenesis of AKI. Methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3)-mediated m6A modification has been recently associated with various kidney diseases; however, the mechanism of METTL3 crosstalk with the molecules involved in ferroptosis is not clearly understood.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is closely linked to the aging process, making the identification of protein biomarkers that reflect aging in specific organs and tissues crucial for a deeper understanding of this phenomenon. This study aimed to identify potential aging-related proteins present in the urine of CKD patients. Utilizing liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) proteomic analysis, we identified a total of 1,712 proteins in the urine samples from both healthy controls and CKD patients in our discovery cohort.

Kidney diseases represent a significant global public health challenge, characterized by complex pathogenesis, high incidence, low awareness, insufficient early screening, and substantial treatment disparities. Effective therapeutic options remain lacking. Programmed cell death (PCD), including apoptosis, pyroptosis, and necroptosis, play pivotal roles in the pathogenesis of various kidney diseases.

FANS has well-established efficiency and 30-day perioperative safety; however, its influence on pelvicalyceal and ureteric anatomy remains to be investigated.
Methods: This was a prospective study of patients with normal renal anatomy who underwent FURS with FANS for renal stones from April 2023 to August 2024 in 16 centers worldwide.

Obesity (OB) and atherosclerosis (AS) represent two highly prevalent and detrimental chronic diseases that are intricately linked. However, the shared genetic signatures and molecular pathways underlying these two conditions remain elusive. This study aimed to identify the shared diagnostic genes and the associated molecular mechanism between OB and AS.

Background And Hypothesis: The PLA2R antibody test is a valuable first-line diagnostic tool for primary membranous nephropathy (MN), helping to identify PLA2R-related MN and potentially eliminating the need for a kidney biopsy in some individuals. By reducing the reliance on biopsies, the test streamlines diagnosis and improves patient care. However, determining the optimal PLA2R measurement method and cut-off is critical to maximising the benefits of the test and minimising any harms.

Mitochondrial homeostasis plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA), a chronic musculoskeletal disorder characterized by articular cartilage degeneration and chondrocyte apoptosis. However, molecular mechanisms underlying the association between mitophagy and OA remain unclear. Here, we aimed to investigate the role of the autophagy receptor protein optineurin (OPTN) in OA, and explore the effects of dietary intervention on OA symptoms and its relationship with OPTN-mediated mitophagy.

Objective: The mortality rate of patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) remains high. The C-reactive protein-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index is a novel biomarker that reflects inflammation, nutritional and immune status, all merged into one single derived parameter. No study has yet linked the CALLY index to survival in hemodialysis.

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) is a group of autoimmune diseases primarily cause inflammation of small blood vessels. Renal involvement occurs frequently and often leads to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which significantly impacts patient health and survival. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to improving patient outcomes.

Accurate segmentation and classification of glomeruli are fundamental to histopathology slide analysis in renal pathology, which helps to characterize individual kidney disease. Accurate segmentation of glomeruli of different types faces two main challenges compared to traditional primitives segmentation in computational image analysis. Limited by small kernel size, traditional convolutional neural networks could hardly understand the complete context information of different glomeruli.

A couple of S100 family proteins (S100s) have been reported to exert pro-inflammatory functions in the progression of renal fibrosis. Unlike some S100s which are expressed by both epithelial and stromal inflammatory cells, S100A7 is restricted expressed in epithelium. Persistent S100A7 expression occurs in some invasive carcinomas and is associated with poor prognostic factors.

The tertiary structure of normal podocytes prevents protein from leaking into the urine. However, observing the complexity of podocytes is challenging because of the scale differences in their three-dimensional structure and the close proximity between neighboring cells in space. In this study, we explored podocyte-secreted angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4) as a potential morphological marker via super-resolution microscopy (SRM).

The ability of the mammalian kidney to repair or regenerate after acute kidney injury (AKI) is very limited. The maladaptive repair of AKI promotes progression to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Therefore, new strategies to promote the repair/regeneration of injured renal tubules after AKI are urgently needed.

Renal fibrosis is a leading cause of chronic allograft nephropathy. While renal biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosing fibrosis, it is an invasive procedure with potential for severe complications. Elastography, an emerging ultrasound imaging technique, appears to be a valuable tool for quantifying tissue stiffness, which correlates with fibrosis.

Background: Vascular calcification is highly prevalent and associated with mortality in hemodialysis patients. However, extreme splanchnic arterial calcification in calciphylaxis with poor prognosis raises questions regarding the reliability of previous vascular calcification scoring methods. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the distribution characteristics of abdominal aortic branch calcification and identify a more reliable predictor of mortality in hemodialysis patients.

Early prediction of acute kidney injury (AKI) may provide a crucial opportunity for AKI prevention. To date, no prediction model targeting AKI among general hospitalized patients in developing countries has been published. Here we show a simple, real-time, interpretable AKI prediction model for general hospitalized patients developed from a large tertiary hospital in China, which has been validated across five independent, geographically distinct, different tiered hospitals.

The interplay between multiple organs, known as inter-organ crosstalk, represents a complex and essential research domain in understanding the mechanisms and therapies for kidney diseases. The kidneys not only interact pathologically with many other organs but also communicate with other systems through various signaling pathways. It is of paramount importance to comprehend these mechanisms for the development of more efficient therapeutic strategies.
