The synthesis of a family of chiral and enantiomerically pure pyridyl-diamide (pda) ligands that upon complexation with europium [Eu(CFSO)] result in chiral complexes with metal centered luminescence is reported; the sets of enantiomers giving rise to both circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signatures. The solid-state structures of these chiral metallosupramolecular systems are determined using X-ray diffraction showing that the ligand chirality is transferred from solution to the solid state. This optically favorable helical packing arrangement is confirmed by recording the CPL spectra from the crystalline assembly by using steady state and enantioselective differential chiral contrast (EDCC) CPL Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (CPL-LSCM) where the two enantiomers can be clearly distinguished.

Marine species may exhibit genetic structure accompanied by phenotypic differentiation related to adaptation despite their high mobility. Two shape-based morphotypes have been identified for the green turtle () in the Pacific Ocean: the south-central/western or yellow turtle and north-central/eastern or black turtle. The genetic differentiation between these morphotypes and the adaptation of the black turtle to environmentally contrasting conditions of the eastern Pacific region has remained a mystery for decades.

Cyclodextrins have a diverse range of applications, including as supramolecular hosts, as enzyme active-site analogs, in improving drug solubility and delivery, and in molecular selection. We have investigated their ability to form stable complexes with bullvalenes, unusual organic cage molecules that spontaneously interconvert between numerous degenerate isomers. The shape-shifting nature of substituted bullvalenes raises the potential for dynamic adaptive binding to biological targets.

The plateau zokor (Eospalax baileyi) is employed as an ideal model for examining the relationships between phenotypic and ecological adaptations to the underground conditions in which the skull morphology evolves to adapt to tunnel environment. We evaluated the influence of environmental factors (altitude, temperature, and precipitation) and geographical distance on the variations in skull morphology of a native subterranean rodent plateau zokor population. Thin-plate spline showed that the trend of morphological changes along the CV1 axis was as follows: the two zygomatic arch and the two postorbital processes moved down, the two mastoid processes and the tooth row moved upward, and the tympanic bulla grew longer.

Understanding of the causes by which reproductive isolation arises remains limited. We examine the role of adaptation in driving reproductive isolation among 12 Escherichia coli populations evolved in two different environments. We found that, regardless of whether parents were selected in the same or different environments, the average fitness of recombinants was lower than the expected, consistent with a prevailing influence of incompatibility between independently accumulated mutations.

Several choices need to be made prior to running a simulation, including the software, which molecules to include in the simulation, and the force field used to describe their behavior. The neuroimaging genetic study usually needs to deal with high dimensionality of both brain imaging data and genetic data, so that often resulting in the issue of curse of dimensionality. In this paper, we propose a group sparse reduced rank regression model to take the relations of both the phenotypes and the genotypes for the neuroimaging genetic study. Specifically, we propose designing a graph sparsity constraint as well as a reduced rank constraint to simultaneously conduct subspace learning and feature selection.

To estimate the risk of metal (Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd) exposure of tree sparrows through food at different life stages (including nestling, juvenile, adult in summer, and adult in winter), metal daily intake (MDI), metal daily intake per unit of body weight (MDI ), and exposure risks (hazard quotient and hazard index) of tree sparrows at different life stages from a polluted area, Baiyin, and a control area, Liujiaxia, were assessed. Metal daily intakes and MDI s of tree sparrows from Baiyin were higher than those from Liujiaxia, which can be attributed to higher metal concentrations of food sources in Baiyin than those in Liujiaxia. Metal daily intakes and MDI s of nestlings were higher than those of adults and juveniles.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) represent a novel and cost effective research tool to investigate cetacean behaviour, as conventional aircraft are expensive, limited in the altitude they can fly at and potentially disturb sensitive wildlife. In addition, the aerial observation from the UAVs allows assessment of cetacean behaviour from an advantageous perspective and can collect high spatial and temporal resolution data, providing the opportunity to gather accurate data about group size, age class and subsurface behaviour. However, concerns have been raised about the potential risks of disturbance to animals caused by the UAV's visual and acoustic stimuli.
