We conducted a comparative study of the mammary gland microbiota in female Wistar rats and the microbiota associated with breast cancer (BC) induced by the administration of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea, after surgical treatment, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and chemotherapy (CT). Chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ) is an essential part of anticancer therapy used for malignant tumors (mainly melanoma and glioblastoma); however, the long-term effects on patient health and life quality are not fully investigated. Considering that tumors often occur in elderly patients, the present study was conducted on long-term (4 months) treatment of adult Wistar rats (9 months old, n=40) with TMZ and/or dexamethasone (DXM) to investigate potential behavioral impairments or morphological and molecular changes in their brain tissues. According to the elevated plus maze test, long-term use of TMZ affected the anxiety of the adult Wistar rats, although no significant deterioration of brain morphology or cellular composition of the brain tissue was revealed.

The state of rat kidneys after injection of bone marrow multipotent stromal cells (MSC) labeled with Vybrant CM-Dil into intact or resected liver was studied by fluorescence microscopy. The main structural changes in the kidneys after MSC injection into intact and partially resected liver manifested as granular dystrophy and necrobiotic/necrotic changes in single epithelial cells of the distal tubules and collecting ducts, thrombosis of some vessels, progression of an ascending urinary tract infection (detection of dust-like fluorescent objects), which can be due to the immunomodulating or even immunosuppressive influence of MSC and their detritus. MSC injected into the intact or resected liver, as well as the products of their degradation were not detected in the kidneys at all terms of observation.

The possibility of dissemination of bone marrow multipotent stromal cells stained with Vybrant CM-Dil after injection into an intact and resected liver was studied using luminescence microscopy. Labeled cells were found in the kidneys, spleen, lungs, axillary, mesenteric, and inguinal lymph nodes. We observed dissemination of multipotent stromal cells and their detritus throughout the body that occurred only after filtration in the lungs, where most cells underwent destruction.

We analyzed changes in activities of enzymes of phases I and II of xenobiotic biotransformation and parameters of NO metabolism in liver microsomes of rats with toxic CCl-induced hepatitis after a 14-day course of sesquiterpene lactones from Artemisia leucodes (10 mg/kg). It was found that toxic hepatitis was associated with significant inhibition of NADPH-cytochrome c-reductase, benzo(a)pyrene hydroxylase, and NADPH-diaphorase, reduced cytochrome P-450 content, and enhanced induction of nitrate/nitrite reductase with accumulation of NO metabolites in the liver. Administration of sesquiterpene lactones stimulated activity of the studied components of the cytochrome P-450 system and promoted recovery of the NOergic system components; the effects were most pronounced in 7 and 14 days after treatment.

Morphometric and immunohistochemical examination of the vaginal mucosa before and 12 months after installation of polypropylene implants for the correction of stress urinary incontinence was performed in 20 patients with genital prolapse. The research results confirmed good biocompatibility of polypropylene and the formation of full-fledged connective tissue in the vaginal mucosa, but revealed the presence of a weak lymphocytic reaction to polypropylene 12 months after surgery. According to immunohistochemical study, increased contents of B lymphocytes and plasma cells responsible for the inductive and productive stages of the immune response were revealed in the vaginal mucosa around the implants 12 months after surgery.

Changes in rat liver after resection and injection of autologous multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells of bone marrow origin (MSCs) transfected with the GFP gene and cell membranes stained with red-fluorescent lipophilic membrane dye were studied by light microscopy. It was found that after the introduction of MSCs into the damaged liver, their differentiation into any cells was not found. However, under the conditions of MSCs use, the number of neutrophils in the parenchyma normalizes earlier, and necrosis and hemorrhages disappear more quickly.

We performed a complex morphological study of biopsy samples of prostate gland from 30 men (mean age 46±11 years) with chronic abacterial prostatitis who were exposed unfavorable anthropogenic factors. The ultrastructural heterogeneity of smooth muscle cells was shown, among which cells with destructive changes in organelles predominated, solitary cells with signs of secretory function were revealed. Most endothelial cells in microvessels were characterized by low pinocytotic activity, destruction of organelles; focal hyperplastic ultrastructural changes were noted in some endotheliocytes.
