Objective: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of refractory focal epilepsy, and the current clinical diagnosis is based on EEG, clinical neurological history and neuroimaging findings.
Methods: So far, there are no blood-based molecular biomarkers of TLE to support clinical diagnosis, despite the pathogenic mechanisms underlying TLE involving defects in the regulation of gene expression. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as important post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression.

Despite increasing knowledge about small extracellular vesicle (sEV) composition and functions in cell-cell communication, the mechanism behind their biogenesis remains unclear. Here, we reveal for the first time that sEV biogenesis and release into the microenvironment are tightly connected with another important organelle, Lipid Droplets (LDs). The correlation was observed in several human cancer cell lines as well as patient-derived colorectal cancer stem cells (CR-CSCs).

Radiomics, the high-throughput extraction of quantitative imaging features from medical images, holds immense potential for advancing precision medicine in oncology and beyond. While radiomics applied to positron emission tomography (PET) imaging offers unique insights into tumor biology and treatment response, it is imperative to elucidate the challenges and constraints inherent in this domain to facilitate their translation into clinical practice. This review examines the challenges and limitations of applying radiomics to PET imaging, synthesizing findings from the last five years (2019-2023) and highlights the significance of addressing these challenges to realize the full clinical potential of radiomics in oncology and molecular imaging.

Purpose: To evaluate the role of radiomics in preoperative outcome prediction in cirrhotic patients who underwent transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) using "controlled expansion covered stents".
Materials And Methods: This retrospective institutional review board-approved study included cirrhotic patients undergoing TIPS with controlled expansion covered stent placement. From preoperative CT images, the whole liver was segmented into Volumes of Interest (VOIs) at the unenhanced and portal venous phase.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are "micro-shuttles" that play a role as mediators of intercellular communication. Cells release EVs into the extracellular environment in both physiological and pathological conditions and are involved in intercellular communication, due to their ability to transfer proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, and in the modulation of the immune system and neuroinflammation. Because EVs can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and move from the central nervous system to the peripheral circulation, and vice versa, recent studies have shown a substantial role for EVs in several neurological diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS).

Proton beam therapy is considered a step forward with respect to electromagnetic radiation, thanks to the reduction in the dose delivered. Among unwanted effects to healthy tissue, cardiovascular complications are a known long-term radiotherapy complication. The aim of the present study consists of the evaluation of the biodistribution of a novel Ga-labeled radiopharmaceutical, [Ga]Ga-NODAGA-Z360, injected into Balb/c nude mice through histopathological analysis on bioptic samples and radiomics analysis of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) images. The Ga-labeled radiopharmaceutical was designed to specifically bind to the cholecystokinin receptor (CCK2R). This receptor, naturally present in healthy tissues such as the stomach, is a biomarker for numerous tumors when overexpressed.

Plasma-derived therapeutic proteins are produced through an industrial fractionation process where proteins are purified from individual intermediates, some of which remain unused and are discarded. Relatively few plasma-derived proteins are exploited clinically, with most of available plasma being directed towards the manufacture of immunoglobulin and albumin. Although the plasma proteome provides opportunities to develop novel protein replacement therapies, particularly for rare diseases, the high cost of plasma together with small patient populations impact negatively on the development of plasma-derived orphan drugs.
