Psychosom Med

April 2020

From the Division of Oncology (Stanzer, Andritsch, Zloklikovits, Ladinek, Farkas, Samonigg, Bauernhofer), Department of Internal Medicine, Medical University of Graz, Graz, Austria; Institute of Medical Technologies and Health Management (Augustin), Joanneum Research Graz, Graz, Austria; and Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism (Obermayer-Pietsch), Department of Internal Medicine, Medical University of Graz, Graz, Austria.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine a potential benefit of the specific psychoeducational intervention "Learning to Live with Cancer" (LTLWC) for patients with operated nonmetastatic breast cancer, with respect to psychological variables and endocrine and immune parameters.

Methods: Fifty-two postmenopausal women with operated stage I to III breast cancer were randomized to either a breast cancer intervention group (BCIG, n = 30) who immediately began participating in the LTLWC intervention program or to a breast cancer control group (BCCG, n = 22). Matched healthy women were asked to participate as a noncancer comparison group (n = 26).

Electronic address:

Acetyl-coenzyme A (AcCoA) is a major integrator of the nutritional status at the crossroads of fat, sugar, and protein catabolism. Here we show that nutrient starvation causes rapid depletion of AcCoA. AcCoA depletion entailed the commensurate reduction in the overall acetylation of cytoplasmic proteins, as well as the induction of autophagy, a homeostatic process of self-digestion.

Glycemic control of intensive care patients can be beneficial for this patient group but the continuous determination of their glucose concentration is challenging. Current continuous glucose monitoring systems based on the measurement of interstitial fluid glucose concentration struggle with sensitivity losses, resulting from biofouling or inflammation reactions. Their use as decision support systems for the therapeutic treatment is moreover hampered by physiological time delays as well as gradients in glucose concentration between plasma and interstitial fluid.

Background: Intensive insulin therapy reduces mortality and morbidity in critically ill patients but places great demands on medical staff who must take frequent blood samples for the determination of glucose levels. A cost-effective solution to this resourcing problem could be provided by an effective and reliable automated blood sampling (ABS) system suitable for ex vivo glucose determination.

Method: The primary study aim was to compare the performance of a prototype ABS system with a manual reference system over a 30 h sampling period under controlled conditions in humans.

Functionalized monolithic columns were prepared via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) within silanized fused silica capillaries with an internal diameter of 200 microm by in situ grafting. This procedure is conducted in two steps, the first of which is the formation of the basic monolithic structure by polymerization of norborn-2-ene (NBE) and 1,4,4a,5,8,8a-hexahydro-1,4,5,8-exo,endo-dimethanonaphthalene (DMN-H6) in a porogenic system (toluene and 2-propanol) using RuCl(2)(PCy(3))(2)(CHPh) as ROMP initiator. In the second step the still active initiator sites located on the surface of the structure-forming microglobules were used as receptor groups for the attachment ("grafting") of functional groups onto the monolithic backbone by flushing the monolith with 7-oxanorborn-2-ene-5,6-carboxylic anhydride (ONDCA).

We report a robust, reliable, and comprehensive analytical method for the identification and quantification of the entire class of coenzyme A (CoA) activated substances, particularly short-, medium-, and long-chain acyl-CoAs derived from various biological tissues. This online SPE-LC/MS/MS-based method is characterized by a simple three-step sample preparation: (1) addition of buffer, organic solvents, and internal standards; (2) homogenization; and (3) centrifugation. The supernatant is injected directly into the SPE-LC/MS/MS system.

The amount of narrative clinical text documents stored in Electronic Patient Records (EPR) of Hospital Information Systems is increasing. Physicians spend a lot of time finding relevant patient-related information for medical decision making in these clinical text documents. Thus, efficient and topical retrieval of relevant patient-related information is an important task in an EPR system.

Monolithic capillary columns were prepared via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using norborn-2-ene (NBE) and 1, 4, 4a, 5, 8, 8a-hexahydro-1, 4, 5, 8-exo,endo-dimethanonaphthalene (DMN-H6) as monomers. The monolithic polymer was copolymerized with Grubbs-type initiator RuCl(2)(PCy(3))(2)(CHPh) and a suitable porogenic system within the confines of fused silica capillaries of different inner diameter (I.D.

Rationale, Aims And Objectives: The diabetic foot is a common late complication among diabetic patients and due to its consequences an important financial burden for society. Intensified treatment has proved to reduce amputation rates, but in Austria so far no data have been available about financial implications and long-term effects of intensified treatment. The objective was to retrieve cost data for intensified treatment of diabetic foot ulcers and to estimate the long-term outcome.

Pharmacokinetic studies of topical ketoprofen formulations using continuous sampling techniques such as microdialysis (MD) or open-flow microperfusion (OFM) require sensitive assays due to small sample volumes. A simple and easy online-SPE-MS/MS method for ketoprofen analysis was developed for both MD and OFM samples obtained from rat dermal tissue. The quantification range is 25-5000 ng/ml with a limit of detection of 3 ng/ml using only 10 microl sample volume.

In this paper we describe the approach to build a web-based clinical data management infrastructure on top of an entity-attribute-value (EAV) database which provides for flexible definition and extension of clinical data sets as well as efficient data handling and high performance query execution. A "mixed" EAV implementation provides a flexible and configurable data repository and at the same time utilizes the performance advantages of conventional database tables for rarely changing data structures. A dynamically configurable data dictionary contains further information for data validation.

Long-chain acyl-CoA esters (LCACoAs) are activated lipid species that represent key substrates in lipid metabolism. The relationship between lipid metabolism disorders and type 2 diabetes has attracted much attention to this class of metabolites. This paper presents a highly sensitive and robust on-line LC/MS(2) procedure for quantitative determination of LCACoAs from rat liver.
