Introduction: Carboxypeptidase, a member of the metallopeptidase M32 family, catalyses the C-terminal hydrolysis of a variety of peptides and proteins in the presence of metal ions.

Objective: To characterize Leishmania donovani carboxypeptidase (LdCP) in miltefosine (MIL) drug-resistant parasites.

Methods: We performed the MTT assay and cell cycle analysis to confirm the MIL resistance of clinical isolates.

The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe has been used to elucidate meiotic recombination mechanisms for decades. Alongside the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, research employing fission yeast has been instrumental in advancing our knowledge of double-stranded DNA break (DSB) formation and repair during meiosis. Genetic recombination assays are the workhorses of gene conversion and crossover frequency analysis; these have been employed to investigate cis and trans determinants of meiotic recombination.

Scrub typhus continues to pose a significant threat to life, manifesting in a spectrum that ranges from mild, non-specific febrile illness to severe multi-organ dysfunction. Although neuropsychiatric symptoms are rare in cases of scrub typhus, we present a unique case involving a 60-year-old male who initially exhibited fever and headache, subsequently developing neuropsychiatric symptoms on the third day of hospitalization. Following the exclusion of prevalent metabolic, autoimmune, and infectious conditions, he was diagnosed with hypoactive delirium associated with scrub typhus.

Article Synopsis
  • - Compound volvulus, or ileosigmoid knotting, is a rare yet serious condition that causes intestinal obstruction by twisting a section of the small intestine, disrupting blood flow and requiring immediate surgical intervention.
  • - Diagnostic imaging like CT scans or MRIs is more effective than X-rays in differentiating ileosigmoid knotting from other intestinal blockages, highlighting the necessity for precise diagnosis in urgent cases.
  • - The case of a 45-year-old male patient presenting with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and signs of dehydration emphasizes the urgent need for surgical evaluation, as symptoms may indicate acute bowel obstruction due to this condition.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most prevalent malignancies affecting males worldwide. Despite reductions in mortality rates due to advances in early identification and treatment methods, PCa remains a major health concern. Recent research has shed light on a possible link between PCa and Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is a significant neurological ailment that affects older males all over the world.

Candida auris is a fungal pathogen of humans responsible for nosocomial infections with high mortality rates. High levels of resistance to antifungal drugs and environmental persistence mean these infections are difficult to treat and eradicate from a healthcare setting. Understanding the life cycle and the genetics of this fungus underpinning clinically relevant traits, such as antifungal resistance and virulence, is of the utmost importance to develop novel treatments and therapies.

Adenosine is a widely used pharmacologic agent in the field of cardiology, predominantly for the termination of supraventricular tachycardias and diagnostic purposes. Most of the side effects are short-lasting due to its very short half-life. Fatal complications of adenosine are rare but can include ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and asystole.

Background: Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a debilitating affliction that affects diverse quality of life (QoL) parameters such as sleep, self-esteem, and daily activities. Second-generation antihistamines, such as desloratadine, are more effective and safer in managing CSU. Desloratadine is a nonsedating, potent, and highly selective H1 receptor antagonist.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac abnormalities are frequently seen in patients with liver cirrhosis, but the impact of portal hypertension on these issues has not been thoroughly studied.
  • This study involved 128 patients with portal hypertension, assessing their heart function through ECG and echocardiography, finding that those with cirrhosis showed significant diastolic abnormalities and increased QTc intervals.
  • The research concluded that patients with severe liver disease (Child class C or high MELD score) experience more cardiac dysfunction, supporting the need for regular cardiac evaluations in cirrhotic patients and potential early treatment measures.

Background: Compared to conventional microscopy, the cartridge-based nucleic acid amplification test (CBNAAT, Xpert MTB/RIF, Cepheid, USA) has the dual advantage of higher sensitivity to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb), and the ability to detect rifampicin resistance.

Aim: To evaluate the impact of the CBNAAT on the detection of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis from private and public healthcare facilities in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Torsades de pointes (TdP) is a less common type of ventricular tachycardia (VT) characterized by polymorphic VT of changing amplitude and characteristic twists around the isoelectric baseline. It is almost always associated with QT interval prolongation. Unless immediately intervened, it can lead to ventricular fibrillation followed by cardiac arrest.

Background Hyperglycaemia can rarely manifest as hemichorea/hemiballismus, which subsides with adequate control of blood sugar. Our study accounted for patients with abnormal, involuntary limb movements with high blood sugar, excluding other conditions leading to or mimicking such a clinical appearance. It is very important to identify such patients as chorea secondary to an underlying etiology like hyperglycemia, which can be cured.

Role of HLA alleles polymorphism in systemic lupus erythematosus: A prospective study from North India.

Indian J Pathol Microbiol

November 2023

Department of Pathology, Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease influenced by genetic factors and environmental triggers, particularly the role of HLA class II alleles.
  • In a study involving 100 SLE patients and 100 healthy controls, specific HLA alleles were analyzed through PCR to assess their association with SLE susceptibility and protection.
  • The study found that alleles like DRβ1*0301, DRβ1*0701, and DQβ1*0202 were linked to increased risk for SLE, while others like DRβ1*0401 and DQβ1*0501 appeared to offer protective effects against the disease.

May 2023

Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, IND.

Introduction: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is associated with other autoimmune disorders that are characterized by presence of organ-specific autoantibodies. The present study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of organ-specific autoantibodies among newly diagnosed T1DM subjects of India and to study its relationship with glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody (GADA). We also compared the clinical and biochemical parameters in GADA-positive and -negative T1DM subjects.
