Macromol Rapid Commun

August 2024

Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, National University of Singapore, 117575, Singapore, Singapore.

Hydrogel devices with mechanical toughness and tunable functionalities are highly desirable for practical long-term applications such as sensing and actuation elements for soft robotics. However, existing hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, slow rates of response, and low functionality. In this work, two-dimensional hydrogel actuators are proposed and formed on the self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO) and deoxynucleic acid (DNA).

Several datasets have been proposed in the literature, focusing on object detection and pose estimation. The majority of them are interested in recognizing isolated objects or the pose of objects in well-organized scenarios. This work introduces a novel dataset that aims to stress vision algorithms in the difficult task of object detection and pose estimation in highly cluttered scenes concerning the specific case of bin picking for the Cluttered Environment Picking Benchmark (CEPB).

Human instructors fluidly communicate with hand gestures, head and body movements, and facial expressions, but robots rarely leverage these complementary cues. A minimally supervised social robot with such skills could help people exercise and learn new activities. Thus, we investigated how nonverbal feedback from a humanoid robot affects human behavior.

Annu Rev Biomed Eng

July 2024

Department of Excellence Robotics & AI, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy.

Scientists around the world have long aimed to produce miniature robots that can be controlled inside the human body to aid doctors in identifying and treating diseases. Such microrobots hold the potential to access hard-to-reach areas of the body through the natural lumina. Wireless access has the potential to overcome drawbacks of systemic therapy, as well as to enable completely new minimally invasive procedures.

Artificial communication with the brain through peripheral nerve stimulation shows promising results in individuals with sensorimotor deficits. However, these efforts lack an intuitive and natural sensory experience. In this study, we design and test a biomimetic neurostimulation framework inspired by nature, capable of "writing" physiologically plausible information back into the peripheral nervous system.

Application of Hashin-Shtrikman bounds homogenization model for frequency analysis of imperfect FG bio-composite plates.

J Mech Behav Biomed Mater

March 2024

Department of Civil Engineering, Calut Company Holding, Melbourne, 800, Australia.

Despite abundant theoretical investigations on the dynamic behavior of functionally graded (FG) structures, the study on frequency analysis of FG bio-composite structures is limited. FG bio-composite materials due to their biocompatibility potentials and good material properties can be applied in biomedical applications, especially dental implants. In this investigation, a natural frequency response of the FG bio-composite plate is analyzed within the framework of the newly developed refined higher-order shear deformation plate theory.

Despite the automatization of many industrial and logistics processes, human workers are still often involved in the manual handling of loads. These activities lead to many work-related disorders that reduce the quality of life and the productivity of aged workers. A biomechanical analysis of such activities is the basis for a detailed estimation of the biomechanical overload, thus enabling focused prevention actions.

July 2023

College of Biosystems Engineering and Food Science, Key Laboratory of Intelligent Equipment and Robotics for Agriculture of Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310058, China.

Antibiotic residues in foods pose a serious threat to human health. However, routine analysis techniques require bulky laboratory instruments and skilled personnel or give single-channel analysis results, exhibiting low practicality. Here, we explored a rapid and easy-to-use detection system combining a fluorescence nanobiosensor with a homemade fluorescence analyzer for the simultaneous identification and quantification of multiple antibiotics.

June 2023

SKKU Institute of Energy Science and Technology (SIEST), Sungkyunkwan University, 2066, Seobu-ro, Jangan-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi 16419, South Korea.

Serious climate changes and energy-related environmental problems are currently critical issues in the world. In order to reduce carbon emissions and save our environment, renewable energy harvesting technologies will serve as a key solution in the near future. Among them, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which is one of the most promising mechanical energy harvesters by means of contact electrification phenomenon, are explosively developing due to abundant wasting mechanical energy sources and a number of superior advantages in a wide availability and selection of materials, relatively simple device configurations, and low-cost processing.

Polymer hydrogels mimic biological tissues and are suitable for future lifelike machines. However, their actuation is isotropic, so they must be crosslinked or placed in a turgor membrane to achieve high actuation pressures, severely impeding their performance. Here, it is shown that organizing cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) in anisotropic hydrogel sheets leads to mechanical in-plane reinforcement that generates a uniaxial, out-of-plane strain with performance far surpassing polymer hydrogels.

Quantifying stiffness and forces of tumor colonies and embryos using a magnetic microrobot.

Sci Robot

January 2023

Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Grainger College of Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL 61801, USA.

Stiffness and forces are two fundamental quantities essential to living cells and tissues. However, it has been a challenge to quantify both 3D traction forces and stiffness (or modulus) using the same probe in vivo. Here, we describe an approach that overcomes this challenge by creating a magnetic microrobot probe with controllable functionality.

Sensors and Sensor Fusion Methodologies for Indoor Odometry: A Review.

Polymers (Basel)

May 2022

Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, The Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Ningbo 315100, China.

Although Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) generally provide adequate accuracy for outdoor localization, this is not the case for indoor environments, due to signal obstruction. Therefore, a self-contained localization scheme is beneficial under such circumstances. Modern sensors and algorithms endow moving robots with the capability to perceive their environment, and enable the deployment of novel localization schemes, such as odometry, or Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM).

December 2022

Advanced Control Systems Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, Tokyo City University (TCU), Tamazutsumi Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, 158-8557, Japan.

The current world condition is dire due to epidemics and pandemics as a result of novel viruses, such as influenza and the coronavirus, causing acute respiratory syndrome. To overcome these critical situations, the current research seeks to generate a common surveillance system with the assistance of a controlled Internet of Things operated under a Gaussian noise channel. To create the model system, a study with an analysis of H1N1 influenza virus determination on an interdigitated electrode (IDE) sensor was validated by current-volt measurements.

Neurorehabilitation From a Distance: Can Intelligent Technology Support Decentralized Access to Quality Therapy?

Front Robot AI

May 2021

Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory, Department of Health Sciences and Technology, ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

Current neurorehabilitation models primarily rely on extended hospital stays and regular therapy sessions requiring close physical interactions between rehabilitation professionals and patients. The current COVID-19 pandemic has challenged this model, as strict physical distancing rules and a shift in the allocation of hospital resources resulted in many neurological patients not receiving essential therapy. Accordingly, a recent survey revealed that the majority of European healthcare professionals involved in stroke care are concerned that this lack of care will have a noticeable negative impact on functional outcomes.
