This work connects the calorimetric responses of different rubber-resin blends with varying resin contents with their alpha relaxation dynamics. We used differential scanning calorimetry and broadband dielectric spectroscopy to characterize the calorimetric and dielectric responses of styrene-butadiene, polybutadiene, and polyisoprene with different resin contents. To model the results, we used the Gordon-Taylor equation combined with an extension of the Adam-Gibbs approach.

This study explores the dynamics of self-assembly and mesophase formation through molecular dynamics simulations of hexagonal and lamellar systems using a simplified coarse-grained model. We focus on characterizing the order-disorder transitions driven by temperature variations and emphasize the often overlooked disordered regime, which serves as a precursor to periodic mesoscale ordering. Our findings not only underscore the morphological richness of the disordered regime, comparable to that of its periodic counterparts, but also reveal the presence of clustering regimes within isotropic phases, thus corroborating prior experimental and theoretical observations.

In this study, we employed molecular dynamics simulations to probe the influence of molecular morphological changes on the dynamic behavior of a model consisting of trimer molecules. This model, comprising a chain of three particles, facilitates the exploration of variations in the internal angle between these particles. Our findings highlight the significant impact of molecular conformation: systems with more linear conformations, characterized by larger internal angles, exhibit relaxation times several orders of magnitude greater than their counterparts with smaller internal angles.

Department of Chemical, Materials and Industrial Production Engineering, University of Naples Federico II, 80125 Naples, Italy.

Biocompatible and biodegradable foams prepared using the high-pressure foaming technique have been widely investigated in recent decades as porous scaffolds for in vitro and in vivo tissue growth. In fact, the foaming process can operate at low temperatures to load bioactive molecules and cells within the pores of the scaffold, while the density and pore architecture, and, hence, properties of the scaffold, can be finely modulated by the proper selection of materials and processing conditions. Most importantly, the high-pressure foaming of polymers is an ideal choice to limit and/or avoid the use of cytotoxic and tissue-toxic compounds during scaffold preparation.

The influence of manganese modification on the spectroscopic features of manganese-doped CeO systems synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal route and their correlation with the presence of O defective structures were verified, focusing on their interaction with poisonous atmospheres. Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance studies confirmed the presence of defective clusters formed by dipoles and/or quadrupoles. The number of paramagnetic species was found to be inversely proportional to the doping concentration, resulting in an increase in the Mn signal, likely due to the reduction of Mn species after the interaction with CO.

The synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures in polymeric matrices has become the focus of much research, as the presence of these highly anisotropic domains determines the transport behaviour and mechanical properties of the resulting nanostructured polymers. In this work, 1D PEO nanocrystals were synthesized from polystyrene--polyethylene oxide (PS--PEO) self-assembly in a polystyrene matrix. For this, three different block copolymers (BCP) were employed: L-BCP (PS = 32 000 Da and PEO = 11 000 Da), M-BCP, (PS = 59 000 Da and PEO = 31 000 Da), and H-BCP, (PS = 102 000 Da and PEO = 34 000 Da).

Collection and mechanical recycling of post-consumer flexible polypropylene packaging is limited, principally due to polypropylene being very light-weight. Moreover, service life and thermal-mechanical reprocessing degrade PP and change its thermal and rheological properties according to the structure and provenance of recycled PP. This work determined the effect of incorporating two fumed nanosilica (NS) types on processability improvement of post-consumer recycled flexible polypropylene (PCPP) through ATR-FTIR, TGA, DSC, MFI and rheological analysis.

Three-dimensional (3D) porous anodes used in urine-powered bio-electrochemical applications usually lead to the growth of electro-active bacteria on the outer electrode surface, due to limited microbial access to the internal structure and lack of permeation of culture medium through the entire porous architecture. In this study, we propose the use of 3D monolithic TiO porous electrodes with controlled laminar structures as microbial anodes for urine-fed bio-electrochemical systems. The interlaminar distance was tuned to modulate the anode surface areas and, thus, the volumetric current densities.

The analysis of structural relaxation dynamics of polymers gives an insight into their mechanical properties, whose characterization is used to qualify a given material for its practical scope. The dynamics are usually expressed in terms of the temperature dependence of the relaxation time, which is only available through time-consuming experimental processes following polymer synthesis. However, it would be advantageous to estimate their dynamics before synthesizing them when designing new materials.

In tissue engineering, the use of supercritical CO foaming is a valuable and widespread choice to design and fabricate porous bioactive scaffolds for cells culture and new tissue formation in three dimensions. Nevertheless, the control of scaffold pores size, shape and spatial distribution with foaming technique remains, to date, a critical limiting step. To mimic the biomimetic structure of tissues like bone, blood vessels and nerve tissues, we developed a novel supercritical CO-foaming approach for the preparation of dual-scale, dual-shape porous polymeric scaffolds with pre-defined arrays of micro-channels within a foamed porosity.

Liquid crystalline ordering of anisotropic particles in two dimensions is important in many physical and biological systems and their phase behavior is still a topic of interest. A generalized van der Waals theory is formulated, accounting for repulsive excluded volume and attractive van der Waals and Maier-Saupe interactions, for rectangles confined to two dimensions. The phase ordering transitions and equation of state are analyzed as a function of the model parameters (aspect ratioL/B and isotropic and anisotropic interaction parameters χ and ν).
