With further development of generative AI, primarily generative-adversarial networks (GAN), deepfakes are gaining in quality and accessibility. While, forensic methods designed for examination of handwriting are often applied to its digital copies, despite being possibly insensitive to cases of GAN-made forgeries (unless methods of digital forensics are co-employed). Approaching this problem from a novel perspective, we have created a translational GAN tasked with generating false handwritten signatures from limited examples, aiming to ascertain whether traditional methods of signature examination will be effective against such forgeries.

Friction ridge examiners (FREs) identify distinctive features (minutiae) in fingerprints and consider how rare these observed minutiae are in their decisions about both the value of a fingerprint and whether there is enough correspondence between two fingerprints to support an "identification" or "exclusion" decision. But subjective perceptions about the frequency of events and features tend to be inconsistent and dynamic, which means that variable perceptions of minutia frequency may contribute to inconsistencies in FREs' opinions about fingerprint evidence. We surveyed expert FREs at two time points (N = 132; N = 99) to establish how rare FREs believe different minutia types to be and to determine the variation in examiners' perceptions-both between different examiners and across time for the same examiner.

Objective: Across two experiments, we examined three cognitive biases (order effects, context effects, confirmatory bias) in licensed psychologists' diagnostic reasoning.

Hypotheses: Our main prediction was that psychologist-participants would seek confirming versus disconfirming information after forming an initial diagnostic hypothesis, even given multiple opportunities to seek new information in the same case. We also expected that individual differences would affect diagnostic reasoning, such that psychologists with lower (vs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how forensic evaluators differ in their opinions and decision-making during sexually violent predator (SVP) evaluations, suggesting that evaluator characteristics influence their assessments more than the individuals being evaluated.
  • Although the study was exploratory, it anticipated finding bias among evaluators, where some would consistently assign higher risk scores and more SVP-relevant diagnoses, reflecting a tendency to identify behavioral abnormalities.
  • Results showed that evaluator differences accounted for significant variance in behavioral opinions and diagnoses, indicating that evaluators rely on different factors rather than a simple pattern of bias in their final conclusions.
