The three SDEs of CLas were expressed in citrus leaves by AuNPs-PEI mediated transient expression system, and promoted the proliferation of CLas and inhibited citrus immunity. Huanglongbing (HLB) is the most severe bacterial disease of citrus caused by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas). CLas suppress host immune responses and promote infection by sec-dependent effectors (SDEs), thus insight into HLB pathogenesis is urgently needed to develop effective management strategies.

Compared to fluorescence, second harmonic generation (SHG) has recently emerged as an excellent signal for imaging probes due to its unmatched advantages in terms of no photobleaching, no phototoxicity, no signal saturation, as well as the superior imaging accuracy with excellent avoidance of background noise. Existing SHG probes are constructed from heavy metals and are cellular exogenous, presenting with high cytotoxicity, difficult cellular uptake, and the limitation of non-heritability. We, therefore, initially propose an innovative gene-encoded bioprotein SHG probe derived from Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV) polyhedrin.

We integrate monolayer TMDCs into silicon-on-insulation (SOI) waveguides and dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton (DLSPP) waveguides to enhance nonlinear parameters (γ) of silicon-based waveguides. By optimizing the waveguide geometry, we have achieved significantly improved γ. In MoSe-on-SOI and MoSe-in-DLSPP waveguide with optimized geometry, the maximum γ at the excitonic resonant peak (λ) is 5001.

MOE Key Laboratory of Laser Life Science & Institute of Laser Life Science, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Laser Life Science, College of Biophotonics, School of Optoelectronic Science and Engineering, South China Normal University, Guangzhou, 510631, China. Electronic address:

Rapid and sensitive detection of phosphate is of great significance for ensuring water safety and preventing eutrophication. In this study, we prepared Au@PATP@Ag NRs core-shell structures using 4-aminothiophenol (PATP) as an internal standard signal molecule to enhance the stability of the SERS signal. Based on the protective effect of ZIF-8 on the internal Au@PATP@Ag NRs and the phosphate-induced decomposition of ZIF-8, a phosphate SERS sensor (Au@PATP@Ag@ZIF-8) with high sensitivity, selectivity and stability was designed.

Ovarian cancer remains a significant challenge due to the lack of effective treatment and the resistance to conventional therapies. Ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death characterized by iron-depend and lipid peroxidation, has emerged as a potential therapeutic target in cancer. Ovarian cancer has been reported to exert an "iron addiction" phenotype which makes it is susceptible to ferroptosis inducers.

Article Synopsis
  • Citrus Huanglongbing (HLB), caused by the bacterium "Liberibacter asiaticus," is a serious threat to citrus crops and currently has no effective cure or known susceptibility genes in Citrus species.
  • We conducted a genome-wide analysis of the DnaJ gene family in various Citrus species, identifying 86 genes spread across nine chromosomes, and classifying them into six groups.
  • Our research found that some DnaJ genes are significantly more active in HLB-infected tissues and suggested that silencing a specific gene could reduce disease resistance, laying groundwork for future breeding of disease-resistant citrus varieties.

Article Synopsis
  • SARPs (antibiotic regulatory proteins) are key transcription activators that regulate antibiotic production and cell differentiation, but their mechanism of action is not fully understood.
  • Recent research reveals the cryo-EM structure of the AfsR-RNA polymerase-promoter complex, showing how AfsR interacts with DNA and RNA polymerase to initiate transcription.
  • The findings indicate that the AfsR-SARP domain modifies the DNA's interaction by engaging with specific regions, facilitating the recruitment of RNA polymerase, which is crucial for SARP-dependent transcription activation.

The mechanical stimulation of cells from the surrounding environment is an important life activity. However, there has been a lack of dynamically quantitative analysis of cell morphology under mechanical stimulations. A theoretical model for the evolution of cell morphology under stretching is proposed by analyzing the transformation between cell deformation energy and adhesion energy.

July 2024

MOE Key Laboratory of Laser Life Science & Institute of Laser Life Science, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Laser Life Science, Guangzhou Key Laboratory of Spectral Analysis and Functional Probes, College of Biophotonics, South China Normal University, Guangzhou 510631, China.

Stem cell therapy is an attractive approach to bone tissue regeneration in osteoporosis (OP); however, poor cell engraftment and survival within injured tissues limits its success in clinical settings. Nitric oxide (NO) is an important signaling molecule involved in various physiological processes, with emerging evidence supporting its diverse roles in modulating stem cell behavior, including survival, migration, and osteogenic differentiation. To control and enhance osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for OP therapy, we designed a near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered NO-releasing nanoplatform based on upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) that converts 808-nm NIR light into visible light, stimulating NO release by light control.

Totally Caged Type I Pro-Photosensitizer for Oxygen-Independent Synergistic Phototherapy of Hypoxic Tumors.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

August 2024

MOE Key Laboratory of Laser Life Science & Institute of Laser Life Science, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Laser Life Science, College of Biophotonics, South China Normal University, Guangzhou, 510631, China.

Activatable type I photosensitizers are an effective way to overcome the insufficiency and imprecision of photodynamic therapy in the treatment of hypoxic tumors, however, the incompletely inhibited photoactivity of pro-photosensitizer and the limited oxidative phototoxicity of post-photosensitizer are major limitations. It is still a great challenge to address these issues using a single and facile design. Herein, a series of totally caged type I pro-photosensitizers (Pro-I-PSs) are rationally developed that are only activated in tumor hypoxic environment and combine two oxygen-independent therapeutic mechanisms under single-pulse laser irradiation to enhance the phototherapeutic efficacy.

Background: Properly designed second near-infrared (NIR-II) nanoplatform that is responsive tumor microenvironment can intelligently distinguish between normal and cancerous tissues to achieve better targeting efficiency. Conventional photoacoustic nanoprobes are always "on", and tumor microenvironment-responsive nanoprobe can minimize the influence of endogenous chromophore background signals. Therefore, the development of nanoprobe that can respond to internal tumor microenvironment and external stimulus shows great application potential for the photoacoustic diagnosis of tumor.

Electronic address:

Background: Colorimetric lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) is a widely used point-of-care testing (POCT) technology, while it has entered a bottleneck period because of low detection sensitivity, expensive preparation materials, and incapable quantitative detection. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a novel POCT method that is ultrasensitive, simple, portable, and capable of accurately detecting biomarkers in biofluids daily, particularly for pregnancy preparation and early screening of diseases.

Result: In this work, a novel dry chemistry-based self-enhanced electrochemiluminescence (DC-SE-ECL) LFIA sensor is introduced for accurate POCT of luteinizing hormone (LH).
