In molecular biology, microRNA (miRNA) sponges are RNA transcripts which compete with other RNA transcripts for binding with miRNAs. Research has shown that miRNA sponges have a fundamental impact on tissue development and disease progression. Generally, to achieve a specific biological function, miRNA sponges tend to form modules or communities in a biological system.

Solid-state lithium metal batteries built with composite polymer electrolytes using cubic garnets as active fillers are particularly attractive owing to their high energy density, easy manufacturing and inherent safety. However, the uncontrollable formation of intractable contaminant on garnet surface usually aggravates poor interfacial contact with polymer matrix and deteriorates Li pathways. Here we report a rational designed intermolecular interaction in composite electrolytes that utilizing contaminants as reaction initiator to generate Li conducting ether oligomers, which further emerge as molecular cross-linkers between inorganic fillers and polymer matrix, creating dense and homogeneous interfacial Li immigration channels in the composite electrolytes.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, due to its high sensitivity, unique vibrational fingerprint identification of molecules and easy operation, has been extensively applied in different fields. Aptamers, being the unique single stranded DNA/RNA sequences that can specifically recognize and seize the target analytes, combined with Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), can offer potent multiplex detection capacity with high specificity and sensitivity. In this review, we summarize and classify the general working strategies of different types of aptamer-based SERS biosensors with diversified protocols which either take aptamer conformational change as intrinsic reporter, or make use of various extrinsic Raman reporters in different sensor designs via on/off approach, sandwich-type and magnetic nanoparticles (NPs)-assisted approach, and catalytic reaction assisted approach with amplification of alternative Raman signals.

The recent explosion of large volume of standard dataset of annotated images has offered promising opportunities for deep learning techniques in effective and efficient object detection applications. However, due to a huge difference of quality between these standardized dataset and practical raw data, it is still a critical problem on how to maximize utilization of deep learning techniques in practical agriculture applications. Here, we introduce a domain-specific benchmark dataset, called AgriPest, in tiny wild pest recognition and detection, providing the researchers and communities with a standard large-scale dataset of practically wild pest images and annotations, as well as evaluation procedures.

Numerous studies have shown that histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis) improve cellular acetylation while also enhancing the radiation sensitivity. In this work, however, we confirmed that low-dose trichostatin A (TSA) as a typical HDACi could reduce rather than increase the radiosensitivity of cancer cells, while the cellular acetylation was also increased with TSA-induced epigenetic modification. The surviving fraction of HeLa/HepG2 cells pretreated with 25 nM TSA for 24 h was higher at 1 Gy/2 Gy of γ-ray radiation than that of the cells with the same radiation dose but without TSA pretreatment.

Phateacid esters (PAEs), such as dibutyl phthalate (DBP), have been widely used and human exposure results into serious toxic effects; such as the development of fatty liver disease. In the present study, SD rat models for in vivo study (normal and fatty liver model group) and hepatocytes for in vitro study (normal and abnormal lipid metabolism model group) were established to determine the effects of DBP on liver function and discover the possible mechanisms. Meanwhile, the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPARα) blocker, GW6471, with the Adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activator, AICAR, were applied in vitro study to clarify the role of PPARα/SREBP-1c/FAS/GPAT/AMPK signal pathway in the process.

Early detection of arrhythmia and effective treatment can prevent deaths caused by cardiovascular disease (CVD). In clinical practice, the diagnosis is made by checking the electrocardiogram (ECG) beat-by-beat, but this is usually time-consuming and laborious. In the paper, we propose an automatic ECG classification method based on Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN).

Conventional strategies for determining phosphate concentration is limited in efficiency due to the cost, time, and labor that is required in laboratory analysis. Therefore, an on-site and rapid detection sensor for phosphate is urgently needed to characterize phosphate variability in a hydroponic system. Cobalt (Co) is a highly sensitive metal that has shown a selectivity towards phosphate to a certain extent.

Multi-photon photosensitizers (PSs) could significantly improve the efficacy of photodynamic therapy due to the long-wavelength favorability for deeper tissue penetration and lower biological damage. However, most studies are limited to single-photon or two-photon PSs at a relatively short-wave excitation window. To overcome this barrier, we rationally design a series of rigid plane compounds with efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in vitro under laser irradiation.

Lipid droplets (LDs) ultrastructure progression under proteohormone stimulation provide valuable clues for understanding conditions associated with obesity and diabetes. Current available LDs probes either alter intra-LDs environments or lack photo-resistance; thus, this research domain is poorly understood. In this work, a N-B-O type BODIPY- hexylcarbazole derivative named BoCz-Lip was rationally designed while achieving specific LDs live-cell targeting.

To describe both the global and local characteristics of a network more comprehensively, we propose the weighted -order propagation number (WKPN) algorithm to extract the disease propagation based on the network topology to evaluate the node importance. Each node is set as the source of infection, and the total number of infected nodes is defined as the -order propagation number after experiencing the propagation time . The simulation of the symmetric network with bridge nodes indicated that the WKPN algorithm was more effective for evaluation of the algorithm features.

The blood-brain barrier is made of polarized brain endothelial cells (BECs) phenotypically conditioned by the central nervous system (CNS). Although transport across BECs is of paramount importance for nutrient uptake as well as ridding the brain of waste products, the intracellular sorting mechanisms that regulate successful receptor-mediated transcytosis in BECs remain to be elucidated. Here, we used a synthetic multivalent system with tunable avidity to the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) to investigate the mechanisms of transport across BECs.

The SWI/SNF complex is a highly conserved chromatin remodeling complex and can hydrolyze ATP by its catalytic subunit BRG1 or BRM to reconstruct the chromatin. To investigate whether this ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling could affect the DNA conformation, we therefore regulated (knocked down or overexpressed) in the cells and applied Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to probe DNA conformational changes. As a result, we found that BRG1/BRM was indeed associated with the DNA conformational changes, in which knockdown of reduced Z-DNA conformation, while overexpression of enhanced Z-DNA conformation.

The visualization of microtubules by combining optical and electron microscopy techniques provides valuable information to understand correlated intracellular activities. However, the lack of appropriate probes to bridge both microscopic resolutions restricts the areas and structures that can be comprehended within such highly assembled structures. Here, a versatile cyclometalated iridium (III) complex is designed that achieves synchronous fluorescence-electron microscopy correlation.
