This work investigates the mechanical properties, microstructures, and water-swelling behavior of a novel hydrogel filled with magnetic particles. The nanoparticles of magnetite (FeO) and the micro-particles of carbonyl iron (CI) were selected and filled into a polyacrylamide (PAAM) hydrogel matrix to create two types of magnetic hydrogels. The isotropy and anisotropy of magnetic hydrogels are also presented in this study.

J Appl Physiol (1985)

December 2021

Institute of Intelligent Machines, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei, People's Republic of China.

The aim of this study is to propose a new wave protocol to identify low-frequency oscillations for evaluating resting energy expenditure (REE) and compare its performance with the 5-min interval abbreviated protocol and standard protocol. Consecutive 20-min indirect calorimetry (IC) was used to collect metabolic data from 23 women and 37 men (between 23 and 43 yr old). Sliding window filter algorithms were used to eliminate noise.

A Muscle Fatigue Classification Model Based on LSTM and Improved Wavelet Packet Threshold.

Sensors (Basel)

September 2021

Institute of Intelligent Machines, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei 230031, China.

Previous studies have used the anaerobic threshold (AT) to non-invasively predict muscle fatigue. This study proposes a novel method for the automatic classification of muscle fatigue based on surface electromyography (sEMG). The sEMG data were acquired from 20 participants during an incremental test on a cycle ergometer using sEMG sensors placed on the vastus rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), and gastrocnemius (GA) muscles of the left leg.

December 2021

Anhui Province Key Laboratory of Medical Physics and Technology, Institute of Health and Medical Technology, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei, China.

Breast cancer is now the leading cause of cancer morbidity and mortality among women worldwide. Paclitaxel and anthracycline-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy is widely used for the treatment of breast cancer, but its sensitivity remains difficult to predict for clinical use. In our study, a LASSO logistic regression method was applied to develop a genomic classifier for predicting pathologic complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer.

Oxidative degradation and transformation of catalysts are commonly observed in water oxidation by molecular catalysts, especially when a highly oxidizing reagent such as (NH)[Ce(NO)] [Ce(IV)] is used. We report herein the synthesis of a ruthenium(III) complex bearing an oxidative resistant bipyridine-bis(alkoxide) ligand, [Ru(bdalk)(pic)] (1, Hbdalk = 2,2'-([2,2'-bipyridine]-6,6'-diyl)bis(propan-2-ol), pic = 4-picoline) as a water oxidation catalyst (WOC). A ruthenium(II) nitrosyl complex [Ru(Hbdalk)(NO)(pic)] (3) was also formed during the water oxidation process by 1/Ce(IV), and was isolated and structurally characterized.

Histones are the alkali proteins in eukaryotic somatic chromatin cells which constitute the nucleosome structure together with DNA. Their abnormality is often associated with multiple tumorigenesis and other human diseases. Nevertheless, a simple and efficient super-resolution method to visualize histone distribution at the subcellular level is still unavailable.

Muscle Synergy of Lower Limb Motion in Subjects with and without Knee Pathology.

Diagnostics (Basel)

July 2021

Institute of Intelligent Machines, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei 230031, China.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) has great potential in investigating the neuromuscular mechanism for knee pathology. However, due to the complex nature of neural control in lower limb motions and the divergences in subjects' health and habits, it is difficult to directly use the raw sEMG signals to establish a robust sEMG analysis system. To solve this, muscle synergy analysis based on non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) of sEMG is carried out in this manuscript.

June 2021

CAS Key Laboratory of High Magnetic Field and Ion Beam Biology, Hefei Institute of Intelligent Agriculture, Institute of Intelligent Machines, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei 230031, China.

The study of the physicochemical process of volatile organic compound (VOC) adsorption on porous materials is significant for design and screening of adsorbent materials and treatment of VOCs. Traditional measurement methods for studying the adsorption process require lots of adsorbates and adsorbents and are time-consuming. We proposed a facile strategy to study the adsorption process of trace gaseous aldehydes on layered double hydroxide (LDH) using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).

Intelligent Personalized Exercise Prescription Based on an eHealth Promotion System to Improve Health Outcomes of Middle-Aged and Older Adult Community Dwellers: Pretest-Posttest Study.

J Med Internet Res

May 2021

Anhui Province Key Laboratory of Medical Physics and Technology, Institute of Intelligent Machines, Hefei Institutes of Physical Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei, China.

Background: A scientific, personalized, and quantitative exercise prescription that has the potential to be an important therapeutic agent for all ages in the prevention of chronic disease is highly recommended. However, it is often poorly implemented, as clinicians lack the necessary knowledge and skills while participants have low adherence due to design defects (eg, prescriptions fail to take individual willingness, the appeal of exercise, and complex physical conditions into account). Intelligent personalized prescription is thus worth exploring.

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is an important disease biomarker, relating to cancers such as hepatocarcinomas and gastric cancer. However, traditional methods are time-consuming, relied on bulky instruments and trained professionals, cannot satisfy the demand for low cost and point-of-care testing (POCT). In this study, a power-free POCT device was developed for the rapid and low-cost detection of AFP via one-sampling.
