NHC stabilized copper nanoparticles reduction of a copper NHC complex.

Chem Commun (Camb)

August 2023

Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Vienna, Währinger Straße 42, Vienna 1090, Austria.

The bottom-up synthesis of plasmonic NHC@CuNPs from common starting reagents, the formation of the synthetically accessible NHC-Cu(I)-Br complex and its reduction by NH·BH is reported. The resulting NHC@CuNPs have been characterized in detail by XPS, TEM and NMR spectroscopy. The stability of NHC@CuNPs was investigated under both inert and ambient conditions using UV-Vis analysis.

A novel hydroxypropyl cellulose (gHPC) hydrogel with graded porosity has been fabricated, in which pore size, shape, and mechanical properties vary across the material. The graded porosity was achieved by cross-linking different parts of the hydrogel at temperatures below and above 42 °C, which was found to be the temperature of turbidity onset (lower critical solution temperature, LCST) for the HPC and divinylsulfone cross-linker mixture. Scanning electron microscopy imaging revealed a decreasing pore size along the cross-section of the HPC hydrogel from the top to the bottom layer.

Composites of polyaniline (PANI) and Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH, were synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of MOF templates with the MOF content in the resulting materials (78.2 and 86.7 wt %, respectively) close to the theoretical value (91.

Highly active and selective heterogeneous catalysis driven by metallic nanoparticles relies on a high degree of stabilization of such nanomaterials facilitated by strong surface ligands or deposition on solid supports. In order to tackle these challenges, N-heterocyclic carbene stabilized gold nanoparticles (NHC@AuNPs) emerged as promising heterogeneous catalysts. Despite the high degree of stabilization obtained by NHCs as surface ligands, NHC@AuNPs still need to be loaded on support structures to obtain easily recyclable and reliable heterogeneous catalysts.

Novel Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Induce Ferroptosis in a Panel of Cancer Cell Lines.

Molecules

June 2022

Center for Research and Biological Evaluations, Institute of Pharmaceutical and Food Sciences, University of Havana, 222 Street # 2317, La Coronela, La Lisa, Havana 13600, Cuba.

The use of nanomaterials rationally engineered to treat cancer is a burgeoning field that has reported great medical achievements. Iron-based polymeric nano-formulations with precisely tuned physicochemical properties are an expanding and versatile therapeutic strategy for tumor treatment. Recently, a peculiar type of regulated necrosis named ferroptosis has gained increased attention as a target for cancer therapy.

Current Developments of -Heterocyclic Carbene Au(I)/Au(III) Complexes toward Cancer Treatment.

Biomedicines

June 2022

Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Vienna, Währinger Str. 42, 1090 Vienna, Austria.

Since their first discovery, -heterocyclic carbenes have had a significant impact on organometallic chemistry. Due to their nature as strong σ-donor and π-acceptor ligands, they are exceptionally well suited to stabilize Au(I) and Au(III) complexes in biological environments. Over the last decade, the development of rationally designed NHCAu(I/III) complexes to specifically target DNA has led to a new "gold rush" in bioinorganic chemistry.

Electron diffraction enables structure determination of organic small molecules using crystals that are too small for conventional X-ray crystallography. However, because of uncertainties in the experimental parameters, notably the detector distance, the unit-cell parameters and the geometry of the structural models are typically less accurate and precise compared with results obtained by X-ray diffraction. Here, an iterative procedure to optimize the unit-cell parameters obtained from electron diffraction using idealized restraints is proposed.

Acyclic diamino carbenes (ADCs) are interesting alternatives to their more widely studied N-heterocyclic carbene counterparts, particularly due to their greater synthetic accessibility and properties such as increased sigma donation and structural flexibility. ADC gold complexes are typically obtained through the reaction of equimolar amounts of primary/secondary amines on gold-coordinated isocyanide ligands. As such, the reaction of diamine nucleophiles to isocyanide gold complexes was expected to lead to bis-ADC gold compounds with potential applications in catalysis or as novel precursors for gold nanomaterials.

Carbamoylmethylphosphine Oxide-Functionalized MIL-101(Cr) as Highly Selective Uranium Adsorbent.

Anal Chem

June 2017

Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, Centre for Ordered Materials, Organometallics, and Catalysis (COMOC), Ghent University, Krijgslaan 281-S3, 9000 Ghent, Belgium.

The carbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO) functionalized MIL-101(Cr) was investigated as a potential uranium scavenger. This metal-organic framework-based adsorbent shows very high selectivity toward uranium, as well as thorium, in competition with various rare earth metals. Furthermore, it showed rapid adsorption kinetics, in both batch conditions and a dynamic (column) setup.

As ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) plays a crucial role in nucleic acid metabolism, it is an important target for anticancer therapy. The thiosemicarbazone Triapine is an efficient R2 inhibitor, which has entered ∼20 clinical trials. Thiosemicarbazones are supposed to exert their biological effects through effectively binding transition-metal ions.

The Cu-Li-Sn Phase Diagram: Isopleths, Liquidus Projection and Reaction Scheme.

PLoS One

June 2017

Institute of Inorganic Chemistry - Functional Materials, University of Vienna, Währingerstraße 42, A-1090, Vienna, Austria.

The Cu-Li-Sn phase diagram was constructed based on XRD and DTA data of 60 different alloy compositions. Eight ternary phases and 14 binary solid phases form 44 invariant ternary reactions, which are illustrated by a Scheil-Schulz reaction scheme and a liquidus projection. Phase equilibria as a function of concentration and temperature are shown along nine isopleths.
