Aims: Exposure to air pollution including diesel engine exhaust (DEE) is associated with increased risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Few studies have investigated the risk of AMI according to occupational exposure to DEE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between occupational exposure to DEE and the risk of first-time AMI.

Early diagnosis is critical, but limited data exists on the condition's early stages. The Impact of Genetic Polymorphisms on Genotoxicity (DNA Damage) Induced by Cigarette Smoke in Humans: A Systematic Review.

The present systematic review aims to put together human population studies that include some relationship between genetic polymorphisms and genotoxicity as well as to evaluate the quality of the published studies induced by cigarette smoke exposure in vivo. The present systematic review was built according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria. Different genotoxicity assays were used by different authors, although the major goal was the genotoxicity assessment by means of micronucleus, comet, sister chromatid exchange, and chromosomal aberration assays.

Assessing community antibiotic usage and adherence as per standard treatment guidelines: A potential area to enhance awareness at community pharmacy settings.

Background: Antibiotic nonadherence significantly contributes to poor treatment outcomes and antimicrobial resistance. In Southeast Asia, including Bangladesh, community pharmacies are crucial in primary healthcare, and are key sources of over-the-counter antibiotics. However, understanding of adherence to the full course of community-dispensed antibiotics is limited.

Fracture liaison service (FLS) is associated with lower subsequent fragility fracture risk and mortality: NoFRACT (the Norwegian capture the fracture initiative).

Unlabelled: Subsequent fracture rates and associated mortality were compared before and after the introduction of fracture liaison service (FLS). In 100,198 women and men, FLS was associated with 13% and 10% lower risk of subsequent fragility fractures and 18% and 15% lower mortality. The study suggests that FLS may prevent fractures.

Association of Protein Intake with Sarcopenia and Related Indicators Among Korean Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Objectives: Due to variations in the standards for optimal protein intake and conflicting results across studies for Korean older adults, this study aimed to quantitatively integrate existing research on the association of protein intake with sarcopenia and related indicators in Koreans aged 65 and older through meta-analysis.

Methods: A total of 23 studies were selected according to the study selection criteria (PICOS). Sixteen cross-sectional studies, 5 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and 2 non-RCTs were included in the review, with 9 out of 23 studies included in the meta-analysis.

Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Pancreatic Tissue Sampling: Lesion Assessment, Needles, and Techniques.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided tissue sampling includes the techniques of fine needle aspiration (FNA) and fine needle biopsy (FNB), and both procedures have revolutionized specimen collection from the gastrointestinal tract, especially from remote/inaccessible organs. EUS-FNB has replaced FNA as the procedure of choice for tissue acquisition in solid pancreatic lesions (SPLs) across various society guidelines. FNB specimens provide a larger histological tissue core (preserving tissue architecture) with fewer needle passes, and this is extremely relevant in today's era of precision and personalized molecular medicine.

Changes in Grocery Shopping Behavior among Low-Income Households during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Objective: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Online Purchasing Pilot (OPP) authorized the use of SNAP benefits online in Maryland in May 2020. We assessed shopping behavior and intentions associated with uptake and intended future use of online grocery shopping during and after COVID-19 among SNAP-eligible households.

Design: In this mixed-methods study, participants completed a survey on online grocery shopping, and a purposefully sampled subset participated in focus groups or in-depth interviews between November 2020 and March 2021.

Hope among patients discharged from an intensive care unit: A prospective cohort study.

Background: Hope is important during critical illness due to the uncertainty and loss of control in the patient's life. Following intensive care, hope might provide a therapeutic effect and increase coping, leading to improved recovery.

Aim: To describe the levels of hope in patients during the first year after ICU treatment, and to explore possible associations between hope and selected demographic, clinical and psychosocial factors.

Past, present and future of injury prevalence in high-income countries: insights and projections up to 2030 from the Global Burden of Disease Study.

Background: Injury prevalence is a metric which can be used to understand healthcare utilisation and prioritise injuries based on the magnitude of the injury rate. Given the ageing population in high-income countries and subsequently ageing of the injured population, the probability of long-term or permanent consequences of injuries is also likely to increase. By understanding past trends and exploiting patterns of prevalence injury rates (PIRs), future PIRs can be predicted.

What makes an epidemic a disaster: the future of epidemics within the EM-DAT International Disaster Database.

Background: Reporting on and monitoring epidemics is a public health priority. Several initiatives and platforms provide epidemiological data, such as the EM-DAT International Disaster Database, which has 1525 epidemics and their impact reported since 1900, including 892 epidemics between 2000 and 2023. However, EM-DAT has inconsistent coverage and deficiencies regarding the systematic monitoring of epidemics data due to the lack of a standardized methodology to define what will be included under an epidemic disaster.

Informal caregiving and mental health: results from the Belgian health interview survey 2013 and 2018.

Background: Due to a globally ageing population, the demand for informal caregivers is increasing. This study investigates the socio-demographic profile of informal caregivers in Belgium and assesses the relationship between informal care (intensity and care recipients) and mental health, considering potential moderators like education, age, and gender.

Methods: Using population-based data from the 2013 and 2018 waves of the Belgian Health Interview Survey (N = 14,661), we conducted multivariate (multinomial/ordinal) logistic and linear regression analyses to examine the socio-demographic profile of informal caregivers and their psychological distress, measured through the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12).

Equity in healthcare financing: A review of evidence.

This review summarises empirical studies on the progressivity and redistributive effects of healthcare financing mechanisms. The evidence varies significantly across countries and financing sources. Tax-based systems exhibit high progressivity, as direct taxes contribute to a favourable redistribution toward low-income households, often offsetting the regressive nature of indirect taxes.

The association between posttraumatic stress symptoms and hope following intensive care unit discharge: Findings from a longitudinal cohort study.

Background: Hope is essential for mental health in general and for recovery following severe illness. However, the associations between posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and hope among intensive care unit (ICU) survivors has not been investigated.

Objectives: To assess hope at 3, 6 and 12 months after ICU admission and examine possible associations between hope and selected demographic data, clinical characteristics, and 3-month PTSS-levels among ICU patients.

Factors related to benevolent and hostile ageism among paramedical students.

Caring for older adults is often seen as less prestigious, less attractive, and even boring and frustrating by health care students. A cross-sectional study of 265 paramedical students examined their fear of death, anxiety about aging, knowledge of aging and gerontological care, perceptions of older adults, and how these factors relate to ageist attitudes and perceptions of working with older adults using path analysis. The study found that anxiety about aging, negative perceptions of older adults, and limited knowledge of aging and gerontological care were directly linked to hostile ageist attitudes.

Users' Perspectives on the Organization of Rehabilitation Services - A Focus Group Study of User Organization Representatives in Norway.

Background: User organizations for people with disabilities in Norway work for social equality and participation, and quality of health services for people with disabilities, chronic illnesses and reduced functional capacity. Consideration of the experiences from user representatives is necessary when determining the quality and appropriateness of the rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation services constitute the provision and delivery of intangible products to maintain or improve functioning in individual patients or patient groups.

Impact of COVID-19 on functional, cognitive, neuropsychiatric, and health-related outcomes in patients with dementia: A systematic review.

Background: This systematic review analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on dementia patients' functional, cognitive, neuropsychiatric, and health related outcomes. It hypothesizes that dementia patients infected with SARS-CoV-2experience more pronounced deterioration compared to those who are uninfected.

Methods: Research from 01/03/2020 to 07/10/2023 was conducted using Medline, Web of Science, and Embase databases, and adhering to PRISMA guidelines and the PICO framework.

Worldwide trends in childhood overweight and obesity over the last 20 years.

Background: Child overweight and obesity is associated with an increased risk of non-communicable diseases. The present work aimed to explain the global trends of overweight in children under 5 years during the last two decades in comparison to the global nutrition targets.

Methods: We analysed secondary data from the Global Nutrition Report 2020 report for the years 2000-2020 from 194 countries, distributed in 23 sub-regions to examine the changes in prevalence and trends of overweight and obesity in children under five years of age.

SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 outcomes across mental disorders and the role of sex: A register-based study from Catalonia.

Introduction: This study investigated the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19 outcomes among different mental health diagnoses and the role of sex in these associations.

Methods: Using electronic records from Catalonia, we identified adults receiving mental health care from 2017-2019 with diagnoses of non-affective psychosis (NAP), bipolar disorder (BD), depressive disorder (DEP), stress-related disorders, neurotic/somatoform disorders (NSD), and substance misuse (SUB) (exposed). The outcomes assessed were SARS-CoV-2 infection, COVID-19 hospitalization, and COVID-19-related death, compared to matched individuals without these mental disorders (unexposed).

Intravenous thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy in acute stroke patients on direct oral anticoagulants.

Intravenous thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy reduce morbidity and improve functional outcome in ischemic stroke. However, acute recanalization therapies may increase the risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage due to its effects on the brain tissue. An increasing proportion of patients with ischemic stroke are using direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs).
