 Pyrocardan trapeziometacarpal interposition implant is a free intra-articular spacer composed of pyrocarbon. This biconcave resurfacing implant, both ligament and bone-stock sparing, is indicated for use in early-to-moderate stage trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis. It was hypothesized that the postoperative outcome measures of the Pyrocardan implant would be comparable to those seen with ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition (LRTI) surgeries and those reported by the designer of the implant, Phillipe Bellemère, but that strength would be greater than for LRTI.

In this application note paper, we propose and examine the performance of a Bayesian approach for a homoscedastic nonlinear regression () model assuming errors with two-piece scale mixtures of normal (-) distributions. The - is a large family of distributions, covering both symmetrical/ asymmetrical distributions as well as light/heavy tailed distributions, and provides an alternative to another well-known family of distributions, called scale mixtures of skew-normal distributions. The proposed family and Bayesian approach provides considerable flexibility and advantages for modelling in different practical settings.

The size (volume or mass) of the olfactory bulbs in relation to the whole brain has been used as a neuroanatomical proxy for olfactory capability in a range of vertebrates, including fishes. Here, we use diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography (diceCT) to test the value of this novel bioimaging technique for generating accurate measurements of the relative volume of the main olfactory brain areas (olfactory bulbs, peduncles, and telencephalon) and to describe the morphological organisation of the ascending olfactory pathway in model fish species from two taxa, the brownbanded bamboo shark Chiloscyllium punctatum and the common goldfish Carassius auratus. We also describe the arrangement of primary projections to the olfactory bulb and secondary projections to the telencephalon in both species.

Tumor tissue biopsy is often limited for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients and alternative sources of tumoral information are desirable to determine molecular alterations such as anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangements. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are an appealing component of liquid biopsies, which can be sampled serially over the course of treatment. In this study, we enrolled a cohort of ALK-positive (n = 8) and ALK-negative (n = 12) NSCLC patients, enriched for CTCs using spiral microfluidic technology and performed DNA fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) for ALK.

Turn signal neglect is considered to be a key contributor to crashes at intersections, yet relatively little research has been undertaken on this topic, particularly in developing countries. Using a case study of Vietnam, this research aimed to explore the role of environmental characteristics, perceived risk, beliefs and lifestyle behaviours on the frequency of turn signal use at intersections. Episodic Ataxias (EAs) are a small group (EA1-EA8) of complex neurological conditions that manifest as incidents of poor balance and coordination. Diagnostic testing cannot always find causative variants for the phenotype, however, and this along with the recently proposed EA type 9 (EA9), suggest that more EA genes are yet to be discovered. We previously identified disease-causing mutations in the gene in 48% ( = 15) of 31 patients with a suspected clinical diagnosis of EA2, and referred to our laboratory for gene testing, leaving 52% of these cases ( = 16) with no molecular diagnosis.
