Typical antibiotic treatments are often ineffectual against biofilm-related infections since bacteria residing within biofilms have developed various mechanisms to resist antibiotics. To overcome these limitations, antimicrobial-loaded liposomal nanoparticles are a promising anti-biofilm strategy as they have demonstrated improved antibiotic delivery and eradication of bacteria residing in biofilms. Antibiotic-loaded liposomal nanoparticles revealed remarkably higher antibacterial and anti-biofilm activities than free drugs in experimental settings.

Biochemical networks are often characterized by tremendous complexity-both in terms of the sheer number of interacting molecules ("nodes") and in terms of the varied and incompletely understood interactions among these molecules ("interconnections" or "edges"). Strikingly, the vast and intricate networks of interacting proteins that exist within each living cell have the capacity to perform remarkably robustly, and reproducibly, despite significant variations in concentrations of the interacting components from one cell to the next and despite mutability over time of biochemical parameters. Here we consider the ubiquitously observed and fundamentally important signalling response known as robust perfect adaptation (RPA).

Method: Consequently, this study undertook a qualitative analysis in order to understand the factors that are perceived to both prevent and promote speeding behavior among young drivers, guided by self-determination theory (SDT).

An improved automated braking system for rear-end collisions: A study based on a driving simulator experiment.

Introduction: To assist drivers in avoiding rear-end collisions, many early warning systems have been developed up to date. Autonomous braking technology is also used as the last defense to ensure driver's safety.

Method: By taking the accuracy and timeliness of automatic system control into account, this paper proposes a rear-end Real-Time Autonomous Emergency Braking (RTAEB) system.

Physiological signal-based drowsiness detection using machine learning: Singular and hybrid signal approaches.

Introduction: Drowsiness is one of the main contributors to road-related crashes and fatalities worldwide. To address this pressing global issue, researchers are continuing to develop driver drowsiness detection systems that use a variety of measures. However, most research on drowsiness detection uses approaches based on a singular metric and, as a result, fail to attain satisfactory reliability and validity to be implemented in vehicles.

Ultrasensitivity and bistability in covalent-modification cycles with positive autoregulation.

Switch-like behaviours in biochemical networks are of fundamental significance in biological signal processing, and exist as two distinct types: ultra-sensitivity and bistability. Here we propose two new models of a reversible covalent-modification cycle with positive autoregulation (PAR), a motif structure that is thought to be capable of both ultrasensitivity and bistability in different parameter regimes. These new models appeal to a modelling framework that we call , which accounts fully for the molecular complexities of the underlying signalling mechanisms.

Users' acceptance of private automated vehicles: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: This research systematically reviewed relevant studies on users' acceptance of conditional (Level 3) to full (Level 5) automated vehicles when such vehicles are to be used privately (herein referred to as 'private automated vehicles or private AVs).

Method: The search followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, and was undertaken in three databases: APA PsycINFO, Transport Research International Documentation, and Web of Science. Articles were required to focus on individuals' acceptance of private SAE Level 3-5 AVs.

Comparing the cycling behaviours of Australian, Chinese and Colombian cyclists using a behavioural questionnaire paradigm.

Cyclists are vulnerable road users and face disproportionately high rates of road trauma, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Behaviour of road users is a system outcome, and thus studying cyclist behaviours can identify problems in the whole road transport system and assist in generating long-lasting, cost-effective solutions to promote cyclist safety. This study aims to investigate the similarities and disparities of cycling behaviour among countries with different income levels and cycling prevalence, and the relationships among cyclist demographic characteristics, behaviours and crash involvement.

Engineering a 3D bone marrow adipose composite tissue loading model suitable for studying mechanobiological questions.

Tissue engineering strategies are widely used to model and study the bone marrow microenvironment in healthy and pathological conditions. Yet, while bone function highly depends on mechanical stimulation, the effects of biomechanical stimuli on the bone marrow niche, specifically on bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) is poorly understood due to a lack of representative in vitro loading models. Here, we engineered a BMAT analog made of a GelMA (gelatin methacryloyl) hydrogel/medical-grade polycaprolactone (mPCL) scaffold composite to structurally and biologically mimic key aspects of the bone marrow microenvironment, and exploited an innovative bioreactor to study the effects of mechanical loading.

A unified deterrence-based model of legal and non-legal factors that influence young driver speeding behaviour.

Young driver speeding behaviour remains a large contributor to road trauma worldwide. In order to provide a more-in depth understanding of how to deter young drivers from this behaviour, this study developed and tested a model of the legal and non-legal factors that influence young driver's intentional speeding behaviour (exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/hr). A prospective survey design was conducted to measure the impact of perceptions of legal factors (including classical deterrence and reconceptualised deterrence variables) and non-legal factors (including the variables of fear of physical loss, material loss and perceived social sanctions, as well as the perception that it is safe to engage in the behaviour without being involved in a crash) at time 1, on engagement in speeding behaviour at time 2, which occurred 3 months later.

Crash severity analysis of vulnerable road users using machine learning.

Road crash fatality is a universal problem of the transportation system. A massive death toll caused annually due to road crash incidents, and among them, vulnerable road users (VRU) are endangered with high crash severity. This paper focuses on employing machine learning-based classification approaches for modelling injury severity of vulnerable road users-pedestrian, bicyclist, and motorcyclist.

Zero-Heat-Flux and Esophageal Temperature Monitoring in Orthopedic Surgery: An Observational Study.

Purpose: Perioperative hypothermia prevention requires regular, accurate, and consistent temperature monitoring. Zero-heat-flux (ZHF) thermometry offers a non-invasive, measurement method that can be applied across all surgical phases. The purpose of this study was to measure agreement between the zero-heat-flux device and esophageal monitoring, sensitivity, and specificity to detect hypothermia and patient acceptability amongst patients undergoing upper and lower limb orthopedic surgery.

Inhaled antibiotic-loaded polymeric nanoparticles for the management of lower respiratory tract infections.

Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are one of the leading causes of deaths in the world. Currently available treatment for this disease is with high doses of antibiotics which need to be administered frequently. Instead, pulmonary delivery of drugs has been considered as one of the most efficient routes of drug delivery to the targeted areas as it provides rapid onset of action, direct deposition of drugs into the lungs, and better therapeutic effects at low doses and is self-administrable by the patients.

Understanding the influence of left ventricular assist device inflow cannula alignment and the risk of intraventricular thrombosis.

Background: Adverse neurological events associated with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have been suspected to be related to thrombosis. This study aimed to understand the risks of thrombosis with variations in the implanted device orientation. A severely dilated pulsatile patient-specific left ventricle, modelled with computational fluid dynamics, was utilised to identify the risk of thrombosis for five cannulation angles.

Case Report: Evaluating Biomechanical Risk Factors in Carotid Stenosis by Patient-Specific Fluid-Structural Interaction Biomechanical Analysis.

Background: Carotid atherosclerosis is one of the main underlying inducements of stroke, which is a leading cause of disability. The morphological feature and biomechanical environment have been found to play important roles in atherosclerotic plaque progression. However, the biomechanics in each patient's blood vessel is complicated and unique.

Aging is an important stage of the human life cycle and the primary risk factor for Neurodegenerative Diseases (ND). The aging process contributes to modifications in cells, which may lead to a lack of nutrient signaling, disrupted cellular activity, increased oxidative pressure, cell homeostasis depletion, genomic instability, misfolded protein aggregation, impaired cellular protection, and telomere reduction. The neuropathologies found in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Parkinson's Disease (PD) are internally and extrinsically compound environmental stressors which may be partially alleviated by using different phytochemicals.

Accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging of the wrist for clinically important lesions of the major interosseous ligaments and triangular fibrocartilage complex; correlation with radiocarpal arthroscopy.

Objective: To demonstrate the utility of MRI in separating clinically relevant from minor or incidental lesions of the triangular fibrocartilage complex and the major interosseous ligaments in the wrist.

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective study, we identified 89 patients and correlated MRI finding with subsequent arthroscopy. Triangular fibrocartilage complex abnormalities have been subdivided into disc lesions-central and radial-or ulnar-sided tears according to MRI appearances and surgical findings as the clinical and surgical approach is very different.

Social disparities in obesity treatment for children age 3-10 years: A systematic review.

Socio-economic status and ethnic background are recognized as predictors of risk for the development of obesity in childhood. The present review assesses the effectiveness of treatment for children according to their socio-economic and ethnic background. Sixty-four systematic reviews were included, from which there was difficulty reaching general conclusions on the approaches to treatment suitable for different social subgroups.

Hydrogels as Drug Delivery Systems: A Review of Current Characterization and Evaluation Techniques.

Owing to their tunable properties, controllable degradation, and ability to protect labile drugs, hydrogels are increasingly investigated as local drug delivery systems. However, a lack of standardized methodologies used to characterize and evaluate drug release poses significant difficulties when comparing findings from different investigations, preventing an accurate assessment of systems. Here, we review the commonly used analytical techniques for drug detection and quantification from hydrogel delivery systems.

Effect of warning message on driver's stop/go decision and red-light-running behaviors under fog condition.

The red-light-running (RLR) warning system has substantial potentials in helping drivers make proper stop/go decisions and reducing the RLR violations. Adverse foggy weather degrades drivers' performances and may also affect the effectiveness of the RLR warning system. However, limited research has been conducted regarding the impact of the RLR warning on driving performances under foggy weather.

Process Evaluation of a Personality Targeted Intervention for Addictive Eating in Australian Adults.

Addictive eating prevalence is estimated at 15-20% in studied populations, and is associated with concurrent mental health conditions and eating disorders as well as overweight and obesity. However, few evidence-based interventions targeting addictive eating are available.
