Accumulating evidence suggests that multiple sclerosis (MS) is an environmentally influenced disorder with contributions from life-time exposure to factors including Epstein-Barr virus infection or shifts in microbiome, diet and lifestyle. One suggested factor is a deficiency in propionic acid, a short-chain fatty acid produced by gut bacteria that may contribute to the disease pathology both in animal models and in human cases of MS. Propionate appears to exert beneficial effects on the immune, peripheral and central nervous systems of people with MS (pwMS), showing immunoregulatory, neuroprotective and neurogenerative effects.

The salivary microbiota of Italian and sub-Saharan African individuals was investigated using Nanopore sequencing technology (ONT: Oxford Nanopore Technologies). We detected variations in community composition in relation to endogenous (ethnicity, sex, and diplotypic variants of the gene) and exogenous (sensitivity to capsaicin) factors. The results showed that , , , , , and are the most abundant genera, in accordance with the literature.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells resist differentiation stimuli despite high expression of innate immune receptors, such as Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9). We review the abnormal bone turnover that is the basis of idiopathic inflammatory or rheumatoid arthritis and bone loss, with emphasis on Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNFα)-related mechanisms. We review selected data on idiopathic arthritis in juvenile human disease, and discuss mouse models focusing on induction of bone resorbing cells by TNFα and Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor kappa B Ligand (RANKL). In both humans and animal models, macrophage-derived cells in the joint, particularly in the synovium and periosteum, degrade bone and cartilage.

Optical stimulation in the red/near infrared range recently gained increasing interest, as a not-invasive tool to control cardiac cell activity and repair in disease conditions. The CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) in endothelial cells (ECs) and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is crucial for vascular integrity. The atheroprotective functions of CXCR4 in vascular cells may be counteracted by atherogenic functions in other nonvascular cell types. Recently, there has been increasing interest in developing biocompatible inhalable nanoparticle formulations, as they have enormous potential for treating and diagnosing lung disease. In this respect, here, we have studied superparamagnetic iron-doped calcium phosphate (in the form of hydroxyapatite) nanoparticles (FeCaP NPs) which were previously proved to be excellent materials for magnetic resonance imaging, drug delivery and hyperthermia-related applications. We have established that FeCaP NPs are not cytotoxic towards human lung alveolar epithelial type 1 (AT1) cells even at high doses, thus proving their safety for inhalation administration.

Antiangiogenic treatment targeting the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway is a powerful tool to combat tumor growth and progression; however, drug resistance frequently emerges. We identify CD5L (CD5 antigen-like precursor) as an important gene upregulated in response to antiangiogenic therapy leading to the emergence of adaptive resistance. By using both an RNA-aptamer and a monoclonal antibody targeting CD5L, we are able to abate the pro-angiogenic effects of CD5L overexpression in both in vitro and in vivo settings.

Primary mucosal melanomas (MMs) are uncommon tumors originating from melanocytes located in the mucous membranes at various anatomic sites within the body. MM significantly differs from cutaneous melanoma (CM) regarding epidemiology, genetic profile, clinical presentation, and response to therapies. Despite these differences, that have important implications for both disease diagnosis and prognosis, MMs are usually treated in the same way as CM but exhibit a lower response rate to immunotherapy leading to a poorer survival rate.

Non-genetic photostimulation is a novel and rapidly growing multidisciplinary field that aims to induce light-sensitivity in living systems by exploiting exogeneous phototransducers.
