The possibility that the clouds of Venus are habitats for microorganisms has been discussed for several decades. Over the past two decades evidence to support this point of view has grown with new data from space probes and space exploration. In this article we argue that microorganisms are likely to be widely present in the clouds of Venus, and may under certain conditions have a ready route to Earth.

WHO's pronouncement of the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak as a pandemic disease came months after we published a warning that the present deepest minimum of the sunspot cycle would be likely to facilitate the onset of a viral pandemic. During a deep sunspot minimum (deepest in 100 years) such as we are now witnessing, two space related phenomena could have an effect on the disposition of viral disease and potential pandemics. With the weakening of the magnetic field in the Earth's vicinity, there would be a high flux of mutagenic cosmic rays.

Exchanges of information analogous to a global internet have been known to take place between biological systems on the Earth ranging from bacteria and viruses to plants and animals. We argue that this process can be extended to include a cosmic biosphere within which evolution would seem to be intimately interlinked across astronomical, perhaps cosmological distance scales. Comets and interstellar dust, argued to have a bacterial/viral component, could be involved in establishing these links.

When monkeys, such as the toque macaques (Macaca sinica) of Sri Lanka, seek food on the ground near human habitation, they may use electrical posts to escape aggression from conspecifics, dogs, or humans. Shields mounted on electrical posts prevented monkeys from reaching the electrical wires, thereby averting their electrocution: the frequency of electrocutions (n = 0) was significantly less (p < 0.001) in the 12 years after installation of the shields than in the 12 years before (n = 18).

Introduction: We investigated if long-term household air pollution (HAP) is associated with asthma and lung function decline in middle-aged adults, and whether these associations were modified by glutathione -transferase (GST) gene variants, ventilation and atopy.
Materials And Methods: Prospective data on HAP (heating, cooking, mould and smoking) and asthma were collected in the Tasmanian Longitudinal Health Study (TAHS) at mean ages 43 and 53 years (n=3314). Subsamples had data on lung function (n=897) and GST gene polymorphisms (n=928).

Chirality detection of gas-phase molecules at low concentrations is challenging as the molecular number density is usually too low to perform conventional circular dichroism absorption experiments. In recent years, new spectroscopic methods have been developed to detect chirality in the gas phase. In particular, the angular distribution of photoelectrons after multiphoton laser ionization of chiral molecules using circularly polarized light is highly sensitive to the enantiomeric form of the ionized molecule [multiphoton photoelectron circular dichroism (MP-PECD)].

Background: Assessing the vulnerability of an infectious disease such as dengue among endemic population is an important requirement to design proactive programmes in order to improve resilience capacity of vulnerable communities. The current study aimed to evaluate the climate change induced socio-economic vulnerability of local communities to dengue in Colombo and Kandy districts of Sri Lanka.
Methods: A total of 42 variables (entomological, epidemiological, meteorological parameters, land-use practices and socio-demographic data) of all the 38 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas in the districts of Colombo and Kandy were considered as candidate variables for a composite index based vulnerability assessment.

We aimed to estimate lung function trajectories during adulthood from 20-year weight change profiles using data from the population-based European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS).
Methods: We included 3673 participants recruited at age 20-44 years with repeated measurements of weight and lung function (forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV)) in three study waves (1991-93, 1999-2003, 2010-14) until they were 39-67 years of age.

Herein the sulfur/nitrogen contained groups, serving as the "hooks" for electrochemical determination of Hg(II), were assembled on the reduced graphene oxide (hereafter SN-rGO) via a one-step facile hydrothermal method. The thiourea acts as a precursor for sulfur/nitrogen doping and partial reduction of graphene oxide. The SN-rGO was used to modify the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for electrochemical detection of Hg(II) by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV).
