Very little is known about factors determining the assemblage structure of megadiverse polyphagous-herbivore scarab chafers in the tropics (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). Here, we examined the composition of Sri Lankan chafer assemblages and investigated whether it is influenced more by the general ecoclimatic situation, macrohabitat, or indetermined stochastic biotic and abiotic factors of each locality. We also explored the influence of the latter on separate lineages and general body size.

Asbestos is a group of six major silicate minerals that belong to the serpentine and amphibole families, and include chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite. Weathering and human disturbance of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) can lead to the emission of asbestos dust, and the inhalation of respirable asbestos fibrous dust can lead to 'mesothelioma' cancer and other diseases, including the progressive lung disease called 'asbestosis'. There is a considerable legacy of in-situ ACMs in the built environment, and it is not practically or economically possible to safely remove ACMs from the built environment.

A new heptaketide named oryzanigral () was isolated from the fermentation extract of the endophytic fungus isolated from the leaves of , along with five known compounds, ()-mellein, )--methylmellein, (3,4)-4-hydroxymellein, (3,4)-4-hydroxymellein and abscisic acid. The structure of oryzanigral was elucidated by spectroscopic analyses including 2D-NMR. A plausible biosynthetic pathway involving Diels-Alder reaction was proposed for compound and related polyketides previously reported.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB), caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis is one of the top thirteen causes of death worldwide. The major challenge to control TB is the emergence of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB); specifically, multi-drug resistant TB which are resistant to the most potent drugs; rifampin and isoniazid. Owing to the inconsistencies of the current diagnostic methods, a single test cannot identify the whole spectrum of DR-TB associated mutations.

The dissolved organic matter (DOM) should be purified for safe drinking water due to disinfection by-products (DBPs) produced by disinfectants reaction with DOM. Current research on groundwater in the chronic kidney disease with unknown etiology (CKDu) zone of the North Central Province (NCP) in Sri Lanka has focused mainly on aquatic chemistry, with limited attention paid to the spatial distribution, compositional sources and factors of DOM. Therefore, the structure, composition, source and spatial distribution of the DOM of two kinds of groundwater samples collected from dug well and tube well in the NCP during the wet season were determined, compared and analyzed by analytical tools such as parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC).

Efficient degradation of alkanes in crude oil by the isolated MM1 alluded to the presence of highly active alkane-degrading enzymes in this fungus. A long-chain alkane-degrading, LadA-like enzyme family in was identified, and possible substrate-binding modes were analyzed using a computational approach. By analyzing publicly available protein databases, we identified six uncharacterized proteins in NRRL 3357, of which five were identified as class LadAα and one as class LadAβ, which are eukaryotic homologs of bacterial long-chain alkane monooxygenase (LadA).

Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) has posed a serious threat to human health around the world. The link between the prevalence of CKDu and groundwater geochemistry is not well understood.
