Combined spraying of gibberellin (GA) and prohydrojasmon (PDJ) was an effective method to reduce peel puffing in Satsuma mandarins. However, in the GA-and-PDJ combined treatment, fruit color development was delayed during the ripening process. In the present study, to improve the coloration of the GA and PDJ-treated fruit, the effects of exogenous application of 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) on chlorophyll and carotenoid accumulation were investigated.

Partitiviruses (dsRNA viruses, family ) are ubiquitously detected in plants and fungi. Although previous surveys suggested their omnipresence in the white root rot fungus, , only a few of them have been molecularly and biologically characterized thus far. Terpene volatiles play an important role in the interactions between specialized pathogens and fruits. Citrus black spot (CBS), caused by the fungus Phyllosticta citricarpa, is associated with crop losses in different citrus-growing areas worldwide. The pathogen may infect the fruit for 20-24 weeks after petal fall, but the typical hard spot symptoms appear when the fruit have almost reached maturity, caused by fungal colonization and the induction of cell lysis around essential oil cavities.

To reveal mycovirus diversity, we conducted a search of as-yet-unexplored Mediterranean isolates of the phytopathogenic ascomycete Rosellinia necatrix for virus infections. Of seventy-nine, eleven fungal isolates tested RNA virus-positive, with many showing coinfections, indicating a virus incidence of 14%, which is slightly lower than that (approximately 20%) previously reported for extensive surveys of over 1000 Japanese R. necatrix isolates.

Scope: β-Cryptoxanthin and astaxanthin are antioxidant carotenoid pigments that inhibit lipid peroxidation as potently as vitamin E. We hypothesized that acute treatment with β-cryptoxanthin and astaxanthin causes similar reductions in the sizes of cardiac infarcts caused by ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury by attenuating oxidative stress and cardiac mitochondrial dysfunction.
Methods And Results: C57BL/6 mice (n = 36) were randomized to receive vehicle, β-cryptoxanthin, astaxanthin, or vitamin E at 50 mg/kg by gavage feeding prior to I/R injury.

In this study, the potential of using fluorescence fingerprint, also known as fluorescence excitation-emission matrix, for estimating the scavenging capacity of peach extract on reactive oxygen species (ROS) was investigated. Samples from each of the five cultivars (Asama Hakuto, Hakuho, Kawanakajima Hakuto, Natsukko and Ougonto) were freeze-dried and crushed. The scavenging capacities of peach extracts for the target ROS (hydroxyl, superoxide, alkoxyl radicals and singlet oxygen) were measured by electron paramagnetic resonance spin trapping method.

Unlabelled: Rhodotorula species are opportunistic pathogens, which cause not only systemic fungaemia but also other localized infections. Despite serious side effects such as nephrotoxicity and hypokalemia, amphotericin B (a polyene antifungal) has been commonly prescribed for Rhodotorula infection because Rhodotorula species are resistant against a candin family of antifungal agents. In this study, novel active compounds against Rhodotorula species were screened from the extracts of entomopathogenic fungi based on the synergistic effect of polyene nystatin (NYS), which causes efficient targeting of compounds due to increased permeability through the fungal cell membrane.

Viruses typically encode the capsid that encases their genome, while satellite viruses do not encode a replicase and depend on a helper virus for their replication(1). Here, we report interplay between two RNA viruses, yado-nushi virus 1 (YnV1) and yado-kari virus 1 (YkV1), in a phytopathogenic fungus, Rosellinia necatrix(2). YkV1 has a close phylogenetic affinity to positive-sense, single-stranded (+)ssRNA viruses such as animal caliciviruses(3), while YnV1 has an undivided double-stranded (ds) RNA genome with a resemblance to fungal totiviruses(4).

A novel putative ampelovirus was detected in grapevines that showed typical leafroll symptoms and was tentatively named grapevine leafroll-associated virus (GLRaV)-13 following the series of numbering of other GLRaVs. The complete genome of GLRaV-13 comprised 17,608 nt and contained eleven putative open reading frames, showing genetic features similar to those of viruses belonging to subgroup I of genus Ampelovirus. Phylogenetic trees based on the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, heat shock protein 70 homolog, and coat protein showed that GLRaV-13 had the closest, but still distant, relationship to GLRaV-1 in the subgroup I cluster.

Black spot disease, which is caused by the Japanese pear pathotype of the filamentous fungus Alternaria alternata (Fries) Keissler, is one of the most harmful diseases in Japanese pear cultivation. We mapped a gene for susceptibility to black spot disease in the Japanese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) cultivar 'Kinchaku' (Aki gene) at the top of linkage group 11, similar to the positions of the susceptibility genes Ani in 'Osa Nijisseiki' and Ana in 'Nansui'. Using synteny-based marker enrichment, we developed novel apple SSR markers in the target region.
