Mammalian purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP) is biologically active as a homotrimer, in which each monomer catalyzes a reaction independently of the others. To answer the question of why the native PNP forms a trimeric structure, we constructed, in silico and in vitro, the monomeric form of the enzyme. Molecular dynamics simulations showed different geometries of the active site in the non-mutated trimeric and monomeric PNP forms, which suggested that the active site in the isolated monomer could be non-functional.

Thermal denaturation of human serum albumin has been the subject of many studies in recent decades, but the results of these studies are often conflicting and inconclusive. To clarify this, we combined different spectroscopic and calorimetric techniques and performed an in-depth analysis of the structural changes that occur during the thermal unfolding of different conformational forms of human serum albumin. Our results showed that the inconsistency of the results in the literature is related to the different quality of samples in different batches, methodological approaches and experimental conditions used in the studies.

Two new alkaline earth metal-organic frameworks (AE-MOFs) containing Sr(II) () or Ba(II) () cations and extended tetrahedral linker (MTA) were synthesized and characterized in detail (UPJS stands for University of Pavol Jozef Safarik). Single-crystal X-ray analysis (SC-XRD) revealed that the materials are isostructural and, in their frameworks, one-dimensional channels are present with the size of ~11 × 10 Å. The activation process of the compounds was studied by the combination of in situ heating infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermal analysis (TA) and in situ high-energy powder X-ray diffraction (HE-PXRD), which confirmed the stability of compounds after desolvation.

Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the benefit of the contralateral esophageal sparing technique (CEST) in definitive radiotherapy of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed radiation plans for 13 patients who underwent definitive chemoradiation for locally advanced NSCLC. Alternative plans were prepared with the use of CEST, with an additional margin of 5 mm from planning treatment volume (PTV).

We show theoretically that Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (RDSOC) in lattices acts as a synthetic gauge field. This allows us to control both the phase and the magnitude of tunneling coefficients between sites, which is the key ingredient to implement topological Hamitonians and spin lattices useful for simulation perpectives. We use liquid crystal based microcavities in which RDSOC can be switched on and off as a model platform.

Key organisms in the environment, such as oxygenic photosynthetic primary producers (photosynthetic eukaryotes and cyanobacteria), are responsible for fixing most of the carbon globally. However, they are affected by environmental conditions, such as temperature, which in turn affect their distribution.
