Observation of Dirac Charge-Density Waves in BiTeSe.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2023

Institute of Experimental Physics, Graz University of Technology, Petersgasse 16, 8010 Graz, Austria.

Article Synopsis
  • The study presents the first experimental observation of a charge-density wave (CDW) at the surface of the topological insulator Bi2Te2Se(111) below approximately 350K, challenging previous assumptions.
  • The findings indicate a deviation in the order parameter below 180K, suggesting the emergence of a spin-density wave that shares the CDW's periodicity, influenced by strong electron-phonon coupling.
  • These results highlight the complex interactions among topological electrons, spin-density waves, and phonons in this material, enhancing our understanding of topological insulators.

Mammalian purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP) is biologically active as a homotrimer, in which each monomer catalyzes a reaction independently of the others. To answer the question of why the native PNP forms a trimeric structure, we constructed, in silico and in vitro, the monomeric form of the enzyme. Molecular dynamics simulations showed different geometries of the active site in the non-mutated trimeric and monomeric PNP forms, which suggested that the active site in the isolated monomer could be non-functional.

Thermal denaturation of human serum albumin has been the subject of many studies in recent decades, but the results of these studies are often conflicting and inconclusive. To clarify this, we combined different spectroscopic and calorimetric techniques and performed an in-depth analysis of the structural changes that occur during the thermal unfolding of different conformational forms of human serum albumin. Our results showed that the inconsistency of the results in the literature is related to the different quality of samples in different batches, methodological approaches and experimental conditions used in the studies.

Self-repair, as a natural phenomenon, has been vastly observed and investigated in a variety of fields. With such an ability, living species self-heal their wounds to restore physiological functions while non-biological materials return to their original states, for example, thin surface layer growth occurs in the regeneration of incomplete KHPO crystals. Here, two seeding strategies are developed for creating incomplete crystallographic shapes (i.

Natural rewards, such as food, and sex are appetitive stimuli available for animals in their natural environment. Similarly, addictive rewards such as drugs of abuse possess strong, positive valence, but their action relies on their pharmacological properties. Nevertheless, it is believed that both of these kinds of rewards activate similar brain circuitry.

Two new alkaline earth metal-organic frameworks (AE-MOFs) containing Sr(II) () or Ba(II) () cations and extended tetrahedral linker (MTA) were synthesized and characterized in detail (UPJS stands for University of Pavol Jozef Safarik). Single-crystal X-ray analysis (SC-XRD) revealed that the materials are isostructural and, in their frameworks, one-dimensional channels are present with the size of ~11 × 10 Å. The activation process of the compounds was studied by the combination of in situ heating infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermal analysis (TA) and in situ high-energy powder X-ray diffraction (HE-PXRD), which confirmed the stability of compounds after desolvation.

Institute of Experimental Physics, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Watsonova 47, 040 01 Košice, Slovakia.

Solvophobicity-driven mesoscale structures that lack any stabilizers are perhaps the most common spontaneously formed stable colloidal objects (particles, droplets). In spite of this, they have been significantly overlooked for a long time and the knowledge on solvophobicity-driven mesoscale structures (SDMSs) is rather limited. Here, we follow up on our previous work on mesoscale solubility [Rak, D.

Article Synopsis
  • Cells are anchored to the extracellular matrix via the focal adhesion complex, which also functions as a sensor for force transduction, but how tension affects these structures remains unclear.
  • This study investigates how tension affects the positioning of important focal adhesion proteins such as vinculin, paxillin, and actin using micropatterning techniques on gold surfaces to control cell shape and perform detailed measurements.
  • Results indicate that manipulating ion channels significantly impacts actin and the architecture of focal adhesions, revealing a complex relationship between adhesion tension and cellular tension that influences the amounts of these proteins.

We show theoretically that Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (RDSOC) in lattices acts as a synthetic gauge field. This allows us to control both the phase and the magnitude of tunneling coefficients between sites, which is the key ingredient to implement topological Hamitonians and spin lattices useful for simulation perpectives. We use liquid crystal based microcavities in which RDSOC can be switched on and off as a model platform.

Key organisms in the environment, such as oxygenic photosynthetic primary producers (photosynthetic eukaryotes and cyanobacteria), are responsible for fixing most of the carbon globally. However, they are affected by environmental conditions, such as temperature, which in turn affect their distribution. Globally, the cyanobacterium is one of the main primary producers in terrestrial hot springs with thermal gradients up to 60 °C, but the mechanisms by which maintains its photosynthetic activity at these high temperatures are not known.
