A philophthalmid species from Israel using the freshwater snail Melanoides tuberculata as intermediate host was studied. The biological and morphological characteristics of all developmental stages of the life cycle of this philophthalmid were described, and compared to those of Philophthalmus lucipetus Rudolphi, 1819 from Israel, Philophthalmus gralli Mathis and Leger, 1910 from Jordan, Philophthalmus palpebrarum Looss, 1899, Philophthalmus nocturnus Looss, 1907, Cercaria distomatosa Looss 1896 from Egypt, and Philophthalmus lucknowensis Baugh, 1962 from India. The possible identity with 1 of these species is discussed.

Argentophilic structures of Philophthalmus lucipetus miracidia and cercariae from Israel are described. Eighty-four of 87 miracidia examined displayed an epidermal plate arrangement of 6:8:4:2 = 20, similar to other Philophthalmus species. Twenty papilla-like structures are arranged on the terebratorium in 3 groups, along 1 axis.

In our previous work (Alexandrov et al., 1996) was reported that the rat sarcoma cells induced by SR-RSV express two tumor associated antigens (TAA). The one TAA has a molecular weight of 52 kD and is detected by the help of a monoclonal antibody 2C2 only on the outer side of the plasma membrane of the sarcoma cells.

The transport and localization of env-proteins of ts1 virus (a paralytogenic temperature-sensitive mutant of Moloney murine leukemia virus) in infected cells of the TB cell line have been studied at the ultrastructural level. It was found that the envelope precursor polyprotein gPr80-env of ts1 was inefficiently transported out of the endoplasmic reticulum at the restrictive temperature. It was speculated that inefficient transport correlates with inefficient processing of gPr80env into gp70 and Prp15E and leads to paralytic disease.

The action of mixed salts of copper and zinc (basic and neutral) on Hisex chickens experimentally infected with Ascaridia galli has been studied. The data show that the lowest host mortality and decrease in body weight gain and the highest reduction in nematode loading occurs in infected chickens treated with basic salts (in comparison with infected chickens, untreated or treated with neutral salts). A mathematical model has been proposed to provide a quantitative interpretation of the observed results.

Polyclonal antibodies (PAbs) raised in geese and eight mice hybridomas secreting monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against the goose parvovirus (GPV) were prepared. They were used for development of immunofluorescence (IF) and immunoelectron-microscopic (IEM) techniques to demonstrate the GPV infection in infected organs and biological fluids. The GPV antigens were established by immunofluorescence within the nuclei and the cytoplasm of many infected cells of the chorioallantoic membrane of goose and Peckin duck embryos, liver and heart of mortally diseased goslings.

A Philophthalmus species whose larval stages have been isolated from Melanopsis praemorsa snails collected in Israel and formerly identified as probably belonging to Philophthalmus palpebrarum has now been reevaluated as belonging to Philophthalmus lucipetus. The present determination is based on a detailed study of all the stages of the parasite's life cycle--eggs, intramolluscan stages, cercariae, and adults. They were compared to the original species P.

The effects of a diet enriched with 25% raw soya bean flour (RSF) on the pancreas and on the avian retrovirus Pts 56-induced pancreatic carcinogenesis in guinea fowl were studied. It has been shown that prolonged RSF feeding of new-hatched virus-infected and uninfected guinea fowl-poults induced enlargement of the pancreas, which was less pronounced when administration of the RSF supplemented diet started at the age of 75 days. Time-dependent multifocal inter- and intralobular hyperplasia of pleomorphic ducts lined by mucin-producing epithelium in the exocrine pancreas of virus-infected guinea fowls fed a RSF supplemented diet was regularly observed.

Sphingomyelin synthesis in helminths: a minireview.

Folia Parasitol (Praha)

January 1999

Institute of Experimental Pathology and Parasitology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria.

Sphingolipids are a diverse and ubiquitous group of lipids. They are widely distributed in parasites and a number of novel forms have been described. Sphingolipid synthesis has been investigated in the malarial parasite, cestodes, digeneans and nematodes.

Specific [3H]fucose-labeled glycoproteins were found in the serum of rats bearing Zajdela hepatoma, which possess different isoelectric points in comparison with serum glycoproteins from normal rats. The electrophoretic profile of the serum glycoproteins is significantly altered. There is approximately a 2.

A 12-kDa fatty-acid-binding protein was purified to homogeneity from Ascaris suum reproductive tissue as confirmed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. N-terminal amino-acid-sequence analysis of the protein revealed its identity with the ABA-1 allergen protein isolated from A. suum pseudocoelomic fluid.

Cytological studies on Rubenstrema exasperatum were carried out. The number of chromosomes in diploid cells (2n = 16), and the morphological characteristics of the karyotype were determined. All the chromosomes (from Nos 2 to 8) had a well-defined short arm and, in accordance with the Ic values, were determined to be meta-submetacentric.

Radiolabel from the methyl groups of serine and methyltetrahydrofolate was readily incorporated into methionine in adult Fasciola hepatica, and a substantial proportion of the label from [35S]methionine appeared in cysteine. The data suggest that methionine synthesis is via methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase and that there is cysteine synthesis from methionine. Cystathionine-beta-synthase and gamma-cystathionase activities were demonstrated in homogenates.

Two hybridoma clones have been produced by hybridization of murine myeloma cell line PAI and splenocytes from BALB/c mice immunized with cells from a transplantable sarcoma induced in rat by SR-RSV. The antibody produced by hybridoma clone 2C2 was of subclass IgG3 and recognized a cell surface antigen of 52 kD. It only cross-reacted with cells from SR-RSV-induced sarcoma in hamster, but not with cells from the chicken RSV-induced sarcoma, nor with a number of methylcholanthrene sarcomas and various other tumors of viral or other etiology developed in rats, mouse, hamsters or chickens.

Comparative studies on the content of sialic acid and on the sialyltransferase activity in normal serum and in serum of rats with Zajdela ascitic hepatoma in different phases of tumor development have been conducted. Unlike the serum from animals with tumors, in which the sialic acid quantity increases in dependence of the stage of tumor development, the activity of serum sialyltransferase statistically augmented only in serum of rats at the final stage of tumor progression. The sialyltransferase activity towards asialofetuin as an acceptor in normal liver and in Zajdela hepatoma cells, was measured and a decrease in this activity in tumor cells as well as in host liver was found.
