With praziquantel being the sole available drug for schistosomiasis, identifying novel anthelmintic agents is imperative. A chemical investigation of the fruiting body of the bioluminescent mushroom Berk. resulted in the isolation of new conjugated long-chain fatty acids (8,10,12,13)-12,13-dihydroxy-7-oxo-octadeca-8,10-dienoic acid () and (7,8,9,11)-7,8-dihydroxy-13-oxo-octadeca-9,11-dienoic acid () and three previously described compounds, (7,8,9)-7,8-dihydroxyoctadec-9-enoic acid (), (2)-dec-2-ene-1,10-dioic acid (), and a ketolactone marasmeno-1,15-dione ().

The goal of this study was to evaluate characteristics associated with Pre-exposure Prophylaxis for HIV infection (PrEP) non-adherence or discontinuation in Brazil and assess the association between these outcomes and HIV seroconversion. We used linked national dispensing and pathology data to identify people aged 14+ years initiating PrEP in 2018. We estimated non-adherence using the proportion of days covered (PDC), defining non-adherence as PDC < 60%.

The design of chemotherapeutic drug carriers requires precise information on their interaction with the plasma membrane since the carriers should be internalized by cells without disrupting or compromising the overall integrity of the membrane. In this study, we employ Langmuir monolayers mimicking the outer leaflet of plasma membranes of healthy and cancerous cells to determine the molecular-level interactions with a water-soluble calixarene derivative, -sulfonic acid calix[4]arene (SCX4), which is promising as drug carrier. The cancer membrane models comprised either 40% 1,2-dipalmitoyl--glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) or 1,2-dioleoyl--glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), 30% cholesterol (Chol), 20% 1,2-dipalmitoyl--glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DPPE), and 10% 1,2-dipalmitoyl--glycero-3-phospho-l-serine (DPPS).

New diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have been increasingly demanded due to the high morbidity and mortality associated with breast cancer. Recently, changes in the collagen fibres in mammary neoplasms have been shown to provide information that can be helpful for more accurate diagnosis. We aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of the tumour stroma in human and canine mammary neoplasms to assess the relationship between collagen modifications and the behaviour of carcinomas in both species, by multiphoton microscopy.

Novel methods were proposed for determining primaquine (PQN) in tablets by multiple-injection capillary zone electrophoresis (MI-CZE) and by short-end injection CZE (SEI-CZE), both with ultraviolet detection. The background electrolyte (BGE), consisting of 20 mmol/L of tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane and 30 mmol/L of hydrochloric acid at pH 2.0, was selected considering a comprehensive study involving the effective mobility versus pH curves of the analytes and BGE components.

Background: Treatment for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is often associated with various adverse effects, including changes in salivary parameters and complaints of halitosis. This study aimed to investigate changes in volatile sulfur compound (VSC) levels and salivary parameters in patients undergoing treatment for HNSCC.
Methods: This prospective longitudinal study was conducted at a Brazilian oncology center, where a convenience sample of 24 HNSCC patients undergoing radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy were evaluated for VSC levels, salivary flow, pH, viscosity, dry mouth, and tongue coating.

The regioselective synthesis of functionalized naphthoquinones the formation and capture of naphthoquinonynes has been used to prepare trypanocidal compounds. The target compounds are functionalized on the aromatic ring, leaving the quinoidal ring intact. Using this technique, eighteen functionalized naphthoquinones were succesfull obtained, divided in two main groups: the first scope using -nucleophiles, and the second scope using pyridine -oxides, with yields up to 74%.

Background: Metal ions perform important functions in the body and their concentrations in cells and tissues are tightly controlled. Alterations in metal homeostasis can occur in certain disease states including infection. In this study urinary excretion of several metals including calcium, cadmium, cobalt, copper, iron, magnesium, nickel, selenium, and zinc in Covid-19 patients (n=35) and control (n=60) individuals, spanning ages and sexes.

Porphyrazines (Pzs) are porphyrin derivatives that show potential application as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT), but are still far less explored in the literature. In this work, we evaluate how the photophysics and phototoxicity of the octakis(trifluoromethylphenyl)porphyrazine (HPz) against tumor cells can be modulated by coordination with Mg(II), Zn(II), Cu(II) and Co(II) ions. Fluorescence and singlet oxygen quantum yields for the Pzs were measured in organic solvents and in soy phosphatidylcholine (PC) liposomes suspended in water.

CDK2 plays a pivotal role in controlling the progression of the cell cycle and is a target for anticancer drugs. The last 30 years of structural studies focused on CDK2 provided the basis for understanding its inhibition and furnished the data to develop machine-learning models to study intermolecular interactions. This review addresses the application of computational models to estimate the inhibition of CDK2.

Integrating agricultural, chemical, and technological knowledge is crucial for developing bio-nanotechnologies to improve agricultural production. This study explores the innovative use of biopolymeric coatings, based on sodium alginate and sodium alginate + Laponite® (nanoclay), containing biostimulants (tryptophol and thymol) or not, on garlic cloves. These coatings were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
