We recently demonstrated that benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) ligand, directly contributes to aggravation of cutaneous allergy in a mouse model of allergic dermatitis. The present study aimed to determine whether BaP-induced AhR activation results in development of airway inflammation. Initially, the potential for a direct relationship between BaP-induced AhR activation and airway inflammation was investigated in vivo, using a mouse model of type 2 helper T cell (Th2) hapten toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (TDI)-induced airway inflammation.

The use of hydraulic fracturing (HF) to extract oil and natural gas has increased, along with intensive discussions on the associated risks to human health. Three technical processes should be differentiated when evaluating human health risks, namely (1) drilling of the borehole, (2) hydraulic stimulation, and (3) gas or oil production. During the drilling phase, emissions such as NO, NMVOCs (non-methane volatile organic compounds) as precursors for tropospheric ozone formation, and SO have been shown to be higher compared to the subsequent phases.

We evaluated the real effects of pollutants through a multi-generation study. We tested whether short-term exposure (48 h) of successive (first and second) generations of neonates (<24-h-old) to two acetylcholinesterase inhibitor insecticides, pyraclofos, and pirimicarb, would change insecticide sensitivity and life-cycle parameters over four generations. Additionally, we tested whether acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity levels would be associated with this sensitivity change.

Exploring the protein-nanomaterials interactions is the topic of high relevance for the future applications of new nanomaterials in biological system. Herein, the binding mechanism of bovine serum albumin(BSA) and bovine hemoglobin(BHB) with two-dimensional black phosphorus nanosheets (BP NSs) was reported. Muti-spectral results showed that the combination of BP NPs with protein resulted in the fluorescence quenching of BSA and BHB and induced the extension of the protein peptide chain by van der Waals forces, hydrophobic forces, and electron-transfer forces.

To estimate the influence of sample processing with a blender, we conducted a homogeneity test using a bulk sample of pre-harvest grapes. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) were calculated from the concentrations of pesticides in the portions from the top, middle, and bottom of the homogenate with fine and rough particles. The results from adequate sample processing showed that the RSDs of the residue levels of all five pesticides in the fine-particle homogenate were lower than 10%.

We estimated the risk to populations of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) due to chlorpyrifos (CH), water temperature (WT), and dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) in 4 watersheds in Washington State, USA. The watersheds included the Nooksack and Skagit Rivers in the Northern Puget Sound, the Cedar River in the Seattle-Tacoma corridor, and the Yakima River, a tributary of the Columbia River. The Bayesian network relative risk model (BN-RRM) was used to conduct this ecological risk assessment and was modified to contain an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition pathway parameterized using data from CH toxicity data sets.

Genotoxic carcinogens are regulated under the policy that there is no threshold or safe dose. It has been pointed out, however, that self-defense mechanisms, such as detoxification, DNA repair, and error-free translesion synthesis, may protect chromosome DNA from genotoxic insults, thereby constituting practical threshold. In this study, we examined dose responses of chromosome aberrations induced by three oxidative genotoxins, that is, hydrogen peroxide (H O ), menadione and paraquat, with or without DNA polymerase kappa (Polκ) activities and mismatch repair capacities in human cells.
