For the first time, our study provides a comprehensive examination of the anti-cancer effects of structural isomers of carene in breast cancer cells, specifically focusing on cell cycle inhibition and the induction of apoptosis. We utilized the hydro-distillation method to extract Piper nigrum seed essential oil (PNS-EO) and identified its bioactive components through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. A total of 46 bioactive compounds were isolated via hydro-distillation, identified through GC-MS analysis, and validated by co-injection using GC analysis.

Speedy decomposition of organic manure and efficient utilization of rice husk waste are two critical challenges for sustainable environment and soil health management. However, understanding the synergistic effects of rice husk biochar (B) and organic manure (OM) on soil properties and crop growth in subtropical conditions remains unclear. A field study was conducted to investigate the impact of sole and combined application of rice husk biochar (0 t ha, 3 t ha), farmyard manure (FYM), and vermicompost (VC) on soil aggregation, aggregate-associated carbon, water use efficiency (WUE), economic benefits, and yield of radish crop in sandy clay loam organic soil.

We propose a modified Comparative Thyroid Assay (CTA, USEPA) utilizing a smaller number of Sprague-Dawley rats (N=10/group) that assesses brain thyroid hormone (TH) concentrations and periventricular heterotopia while maintaining assay sensitivity. Our recent findings demonstrated that a prenatal test cohort of the modified CTA detected a dose-dependent decrease in maternal serum T3 (up to -26%) and T4 (up to -44%) with sodium phenobarbital (NaPB) exposure at 1000 ppm and 1500 ppm, equivalent to intakes of 60 and 84 mg/kg/day, respectively. On gestation day (GD) 20, fetuses exhibited reduced serum (-26%) and brain (-29%) TH concentrations, although these reductions were not dose dependent.

The current study explores the seasonal dynamics of microplastic (MP) pollution in the Ganga River of Varanasi City, Uttar Pradesh, India, focusing on water and sediment samples collected during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods. The analysis shows significant variations in MP occurrence, shape dynamics, color distribution, and size composition across diverse sampling sites. During the pre-monsoon season, MP concentrations ranged from 17 to 36 particles/L in water samples and 160 to 312 particles/kg in sediment, indicating a moderate to high level of contamination.

In a past study, we proposed a modified Comparative Thyroid Assay (CTA) with additional examinations of brain thyroid hormone (TH) concentrations and brain histopathology but with smaller group sizes. The results showed that the modified CTA in Sprague Dawley rats detected 10 ppm 6-propylthiouracil (6-PTU)-induced significant suppressions of serum/brain TH concentrations in offspring. To confirm the reliability of qualitative brain histopathology and identify the optimal testing time for heterotopia (a cluster of ectopic neurons) in the modified CTA, brain histopathology together with serum/brain TH concentrations were assessed in GD20 fetuses and PND2, 4, 21, and 28 pups using a similar study protocol but with a smaller number of animals (N=3-6/group/time).

Junctional epidermolysis bullosa is an intractable cutaneous disorder in humans causing skin fragility and blistering due to mutations in genes encoding essential molecules adhering epidermis and dermis including collagen XVII. However, the pathogenesis still remains to be not fully understood perhaps because of a lack of appropriate animal models. In this study, we report novel mutant rats experiencing junctional epidermolysis bullosa, which was confirmed to be caused by a frameshift mutation of Col17a1 gene, as a rat model for investigating the underlying mechanism of pathogenesis.

Bioremediation of surfactants in water bodies holds significant ecological importance as they are contaminants of emerging concern posing substantial threats to the aquatic environment. We present a novel lung aerosol exposure system named MALIES (modular air-liquid interface exposure system), which allows three-dimensional cultivation of lung epithelial cells in alveolar-like scaffolds (MatriGrids) and exposure to nanoparticle aerosols. MALIES consists of multiple modular units for aerosol generation, and can be rapidly assembled and commissioned. The MALIES system was proven for its ability to reliably produce a dose-dependent toxicity in A549 cells using CuSO aerosol.

One outcome of the 2022 Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Pellston Workshop on incorporating climate change predictions into ecological risk assessments was the key question of how to integrate ecological risk assessments that focus on contaminants with the environmental alterations from climate projections. This article summarizes the results of integrating selected direct and indirect effects of climate change into an existing Bayesian network previously used for ecological risk assessment. The existing Bayesian Network Relative Risk Model integrated the effects of two organophosphate pesticides (malathion and diazinon), water temperature, and dissolved oxygen levels on the Chinook salmon population in the Yakima River Basin (YRB), Washington, USA.

Flavopiridol is a flavone synthesized from the natural product rohitukine, which is derived from an Indian medicinal plant, namely . A deeper understanding of the biological mechanisms by which such molecules act may allow scientists to develop effective therapeutic strategies against a variety of life-threatening diseases, such as cancer, viruses, fungal infections, parasites, and neurodegenerative diseases. Mechanistic insight of flavopiridol reveals its potential for kinase inhibitory activity of CDKs (cyclin-dependent kinases) and other kinases, leading to the inhibition of various processes, including cell cycle progression, apoptosis, tumor proliferation, angiogenesis, tumor metastasis, and the inflammation process.
