Micro-and nanoplastics (MNPs) are particles that are smaller than a millimeter in size and have infiltrated both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. MNPs pollution have become a widespread problem causing severe adverse effects on human health and the environment worldwide. Once in the environment, these polymers are not easily degradable due to their recalcitrant nature and small size and are easily consumed by aquatic organisms and transported through the food chain, at great risk to human health.

Light-driven splitting of water to produce H and reduction of molecular oxygen to synthesize HO from water are the emerging environmentally friendly methods for converting solar energy into green energy and chemicals. In this paper, vacancy defect and heterojunction engineering effectively adjusted the conduction band position of ZnInS, enriched the electron density, broadened the optical absorption range, increased the specific surface area, and accelerated the charge carrier transfer and separation of g-CN/sulfur-vacancy-containing ZnInS (CN/Vs-ZIS) heterostructures. As a result, all of the CN/Vs-ZIS heterostructures possessed greatly enhanced photocatalytic activities and the optimized sample 2CN/Vs-ZIS exhibited the highest visible-light photocatalytic performance.

This study was carried out to demonstrate the mechanism of phenolic root exudates affecting microbial-mediated cadmium (Cd) speciation transformation thus enhancing the Avicennia marina tolerance to Cd. A rhizo-box experiment was conducted including eight treatments with four Cd levels (0, 1, 2, and 4 mg Cd kg) and two phenol levels (0, 15 mg kg). The results showed that the addition of phenols increased the pH, reduced the number of iron-reducing bacteria (IRB) and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) in the rhizosphere sediments, meanwhile promoted the transformation of Cd to low activity speciation.

Marine oil spills emanating from wells, pipelines, freighters, tankers, and storage facilities draw public attention and necessitate quick and environmentally friendly response measures. It is sometimes feasible to contain the oil with booms and collect it with skimmers or burn it, but this is impracticable in many circumstances, and all that can be done without causing further environmental damage is adopting natural attenuation, particularly through microbial biodegradation. Biodegradation can be aided by carefully supplying biologically accessible nitrogen and phosphorus to alleviate some of the microbial growth constraints at the shoreline.
