Background: Subcutaneous tissue is an attractive extra-hepatic heterotopic site for islet transplantation; however, poor oxygen tension and blood supply during early engraftment of implanted islets have limited the use of this site in clinical applications.

Methods: This study investigated the vascularization potential of hypoxia-preconditioned mesenchymal stem cells (3% O ; hypo-MSCs) in PLGA-based bio-artificial beds for subsequent subcutaneous islet transplantation. Sheet-typed polymeric PLGA scaffolds coated with hypo-MSCs or normo-MSCs (MSCs cultured under normoxia conditions, 21% O ) were implanted subcutaneously in mice.

Background: In Sudan, tuberculosis diagnosis largely relies on clinical symptoms and smear microscopy as in many other low- and middle-income countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the positive predictive value of a positive sputum smear in patients investigated for pulmonary tuberculosis in Eastern Sudan.

Methods: Two sputum samples from patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of tuberculosis were investigated using direct Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining and light microscopy between June to October 2014 and January to July 2016.

Malaria continues to present a global health threat; the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 214 million cases of malaria by the year 2015 with a death rate of 438000. Sudan is endemic to malaria with over 95% of malaria cases due to . Chloroquine is a well-established drug in the treatment of malaria although its use has declined since its introduction as the drug of choice in treatment of malaria in Sudan.

The parasite resides and replicates within host macrophages during visceral leishmaniasis (VL). This study aimed to evaluate neopterin, a marker of macrophage activation, as possible pharmacodynamic biomarker to monitor VL treatment response and to predict long-term clinical relapse of VL. Following informed consent, 497 plasma samples were collected from East-African VL patients receiving a 28-day miltefosine monotherapy (48 patients) or 11-day combination therapy of miltefosine and liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB, 48 patients).

Malaria control program in the Arabian Peninsula, backed by adequate logistical support, has interrupted transmission with exception of limited sites in Saudi Arabia and sporadic outbreaks in Oman. However, sustained influx of imported malaria represents a direct threat to the above success. Here we examined the extent of genetic diversity among imported P.

The conversion of tachyzoites into bradyzoites is a way for Toxoplasma gondii to establish a chronic and asymptomatic infection and achieve lifelong persistence in the host. The bradyzoites form tissue cysts in the retina, but not much is known about the horizontal distribution of the cysts or their interactions with glial cells in the retina. A chronic ocular toxoplasmosis model was induced by per oral administration of T.

Background: Respiratory infections are one of the commonest causes of morbidity and mortality related to infectious diseases worldwide. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance is a major global health problem which is well established in developing countries. Good clinical suspicion and correct laboratory identification of respiratory infection causing organisms followed by the appropriate management are needed to compact both community-acquired and nosocomial infection respiratory infections.

Tacrolimus-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) is a rare complication. TA-TMA is characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and organ damage due to thrombus. We report asymptomatic TA-TMA diagnosed by laboratory tests in pig-to-rhesus corneal xenotransplantation.

Mycetoma, one of the badly neglected tropical diseases, it is a localised chronic granulomatous inflammatory disease characterised by painless subcutaneous mass and formation of multiple sinuses that produce purulent discharge and grains. If untreated early and appropriately, it usually spread to affect the deep structures and bone resulting in massive damage, deformities and disabilities. It can also spread via the lymphatics and blood leading to distant secondary satellites associated with high morbidity and mortality.

Background: Infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD) is a rare hereditary neurological disorder caused by mutations in PLA2G6. The disease commonly affects children below 3 years of age and presents with delay in motor skills, optic atrophy and progressive spastic tetraparesis. Studies of INAD in Africa are extremely rare, and genetic studies from Sub Saharan Africa are almost non-existent.

Epitope-based ligation of ICAM-1: Therapeutic target for protection against the development of rheumatoid arthritis.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

June 2018

Transplantation Research Institute, Seoul National University Medical Research Center, Seoul 03080, Republic of Korea; Department of Medicine, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul 03080, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Identification of a particular epitope on the domain 2 of human ICAM-1 led us to focus on its role in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Key observations from our previous xenotransplantation research included the generation of tolerogenic DCs, antigen-specific T-cell tolerance, and reduced production of inflammatory cytokines. The critically important point is the fact that it works initially on DC maturation.

Dietary exosome-miR-23b may be a novel therapeutic measure for preventing Kashin-Beck disease.

Exp Ther Med

April 2018

Institute of Endemic Diseases, School of Public Health, Xi'an Jiaotong University Health Science Center, Key Laboratory of Trace Elements and Endemic Diseases, National Health and Family Planning Commission, Xi'an, Shaanxi 710061, P.R. China.

Previous studies have identified a close association between diet and the prevalence of Kashin-Beck disease (KBD); however, the mechanisms via which the diet protects against KBD-associated cartilage injury has remained elusive. Recent international research studies have revealed a therapeutic role of dietary exosome micro (mi)RNAs in repairing chondrocyte lesions by regulating genes and proteins associated with cellular apoptosis and extracellular matrix. Vital molecules affecting bio-functions of chondrocytes, including miR-23b and protein kinase cyclic AMP-activated catalytic subunit β, were preliminarily identified to be dysregulated in cells and cartilage tissue of KBD patients.
