Background: Although pancreatic islet transplantation is becoming an effective therapeutic option for patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who suffer from a substantially impaired awareness of hypoglycemia, its application is limited due to the lack of donors. Thus, pig-to-human islet xenotransplantation has been regarded as a promising alternative due to the unlimited number of "donor organs." Long-term xenogeneic islet graft survival in pig-to-non-human primate (NHP) models has mainly been achieved by administering the anti-CD154 mAb-based immunosuppressant regimen.

Ovarian cancer is the second major lethal gynecologic malignancy in developing countries. This study aimed to characterize urinary micro-peptides as potential diagnostic biomarkers for ovarian cancer. In a prospective, longitudinal and case-controlled study and following informed consent, urine and plasma samples were collected from 112 women with histologically-proven ovarian cancer and 200 apparently healthy age-matched volunteers.

Objective To explore the association of cardiac disease associated genetic variants and the high incidence of Yunnan sudden unexplained death (YNSUD) in Yi nationality. Methods The genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples collected from 205 Yi villagers from YNSUD aggregative villages (inpatient group) and 197 healthy Yi villagers from neighboring villages (control group). Fifty-two single nucleotide variants (SNVs) of 25 cardiac disease associated genes were genotyped using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS).

Retina, one of the highest oxygen demanding tissues, is vulnerable to vascular insufficiencies, and various ocular vascular disorders can cause chronic retinal ischemia. To investigate the pathophysiology, rodent models developed by bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) have been utilized. However, mice lack posterior communicating arteries in the circle of Willis and cannot endure the brain ischemia induced by the bilateral occlusion.

Background: Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) is endemic in Fiji but its prevalence is not known and likely to have changed after a decade of mass drug administration (MDA) for lymphatic filariasis (LF). By linking with LF transmission assessment surveys (LF-TAS), we undertook the first nation-wide assessment of STH in Fijian primary schools, as well as an analysis of factors associated with STH infections.
Methodology/principal Findings: A cross-sectional assessment for STH was conducted in all four Divisions of Fiji from 2014 to 2015.
In the present study, sarcocysts of Sarcocystis cymruensis were found in four of 42 (9.5%) Norway rats and those of S. ratti were observed in six of 60 (10%) black rats in China.

Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation is a well-known mechanism by which chemoresistance to anticancer agents is reported. It is well-known that irinotecan as a chemotherapeutic drug against non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) has limited anticancer effect due to NF-κB activation. In this study, we propose the novel role of GRA16, a dense granule protein of , as an anticancer agent to increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy via the inhibition of NF-κB activation.

Objectives: To investigate the potential efficacy of Acacia Senegal extract Gum Arabic (GA) supplementation as immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory dietary intervention among newly diagnosed COVID 19 Sudanese patients. To study the effect of GA on the level of cytokines, TNFα, IL8, IL6 IL10, CRP and the viral load. Secondary outcomes will be the effect of GA oral intake on mortality rate and days of hospital admission.

Eosinophilia occurs commonly in many diseases including allergic diseases and helminthic infections. Toxocariasis has been suggested as one cause of eosinophilia. The present study was undertaken to examine the prevalence of toxocariasis in patients with eosinophilia and to identify the risk factors for toxocariasis.

This study aimed at investigating the immunohistochemical expression of PAX-8 among Sudanese females diagnosed with cervical, endometrial, and ovarian cancers between December 2017 and May 2019 by studying their Formalin-fixed paraffin embedded blocks.
Results: Sixty patients diagnosed with female reproductive tract cancers were included who aged 58.

Kudoa septempunctata is a myxozoan parasite that causes food poisoning in individuals consuming olive flounder. The present study aimed to investigate the currently insufficiently elucidated early molecular mechanisms of inflammatory responses in the intestine owing to parasite ingestion. After Kudoa spores were isolated from olive flounder, HT29 cells were exposed to spores identified to be alive using SYTO-9 and propidium iodide staining or to antigens of Kudoa spores (KsAg).

A contrasting genotype and allele frequency pattern between Africans and non-Africans in the Duffy (T-33C) locus is reported. Its near fixation in various populations suggest is no longer under natural selection, and that current distribution is possibly a relic of distant extreme selection combined with genetic drift during the out of Africa. We put this difference into the utility to infer the ancestral state of ambiguous loci in different populations.

Background: Current malaria control and elimination strategies rely mainly on efficacious antimalarial drugs. However, drug resistance is a major threat facing malaria control programs. Determination of drug resistance molecular markers is useful in the monitoring and surveillance of malaria drug efficacy.

Previous analysis of postentry events revealed that human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) displays a unique, extended nuclear translocation pattern in monocytes. We determined that c-Src signaling through pentamer engagement of integrins is required upon HCMV entry to avoid sorting of the virus into late endosomes and subsequent degradation. To follow up on this previous study, we designed experiments to investigate how HCMV-induced signaling through the other major axis-the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) kinase-regulates viral postentry events.

Introduction: Understanding the feeding behavior and host choice of sand flies provides valuable information on vector-host relationships and elucidates the epidemiological patterns of leishmaniasis transmission. Blood meal analysis studies are essential for estimating the efficiency of pathogen transmission, assessing the relative human disease risk, and assist in identifying the other potential hosts of leishmaniasis. In Sudan and most of East Africa, there are large remaining gaps in knowledge regarding the feeding habits of phlebotomine vectors.

The Pentose Phosphate Pathway (PPP) is one of the key metabolic pathways occurring in living cells to produce energy and maintain cellular homeostasis. Cancer cells have higher cytoplasmic utilization of glucose (glycolysis), even in the presence of oxygen; this is known as the "Warburg Effect". However, cytoplasmic glucose utilization can also occur in cancer through the PPP.

Background: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is associated with a poor prognosis and may affect the pathogenesis of GBM. In this study, we investigated the role of HCMV-infected astrocytoma cells in impairing the activity of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) specific to the HCMV protein.
Methods: CTLs specific to HCMV immediate early (IE)-1 were expanded from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of healthy donors by stimulating CD8+ T lymphocytes with U373MG cells (ATCC HTB-17: male) expressing HCMV IE-1.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multi-systemic inflammatory autoimmune disease involving peripheral joints, and the pathogenesis is not clear. Studies showed that DNA methylation and expression might also be involved in the pathogenesis of RA. This study integrated three expression profile datasets (GSE55235, GSE12021, and GSE55457) and one methylation profile dataset GSE111942 to elucidate the potential essential candidate genes and pathways in RA.
