A risk prediction model for efficient intubation in the emergency department: A 4-year single-center retrospective analysis.

Objective: To analyze the risk factors associated with intubated critically ill patients in the emergency department (ED) and develop a prediction model by machine learning algorithms.

Methods: This study was conducted in an academic tertiary hospital in Hangzhou, China. Critically ill patients admitted to the ED were retrospectively analyzed from May 2018 to July 2022.

Background/objective: Severe dysphagia is a rare presenting symptom of primary hyperparathyroidism, whereas the most common hypercalcemia-related causes include gastrointestinal symptoms, such as anorexia, constipation, and pancreatitis. This case presentation aimed to describe swallowing difficulty as a leading symptom of hypercalcemia.

We present a case of penoscrotal swelling caused by the first attack of acute interstitial edematous alcohol-induced pancreatitis in a young male patient. : A 22-year-old man was admitted to the emergency unit due to diarrhea and vomiting since morning which was followed by severe abdominal pain.

Therefore, comprehending the larger picture is important.

Hub and Spokes-Implementation of Basic Palliative Care into University Hospital Practice-A Pilot Study.

The aim is to implement knowledge of basic palliative care in selected departments by the Hub and Spokes model. Implementation of basic palliative care was designed as a stepwise training model by skills lectures over a time period of 2 years. In each of the six selected oncological and nononcological departments, one physician and two nurses were trained in semi-annual half-day meetings as expert representatives within their departments.

Analysis of coagulation factors in angioedema/urticaria: increased values of D-dimer and fibrinogen in isolated angioedema.

Introduction: Recent research has shown that blood coagulation and the extrinsic coagulation cascade are involved in the pathogenesis of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), but little is known about the coagulation factors in angioedema.

Methods: This study included 58 participants: 29 patients with chronic angioedema (14 with isolated angioedema and 15 with angioedema with wheals) and 29 healthy controls (HCs). We compared the values of coagulation factors in patients with isolated angioedema to those with wheals.

A First Experience of Distant Lung Preservation for Transplantation in the Russian Federation.

Lung transplant is an effective method of treating patients with end-stage respiratory diseases, but problems such as the imbalance between the number of donor organs and the number ofrecipients needing organs still play a leading role. From a transplant point of view, a multiorgan donor is considered of greatest efficiency, so that all organs that can potentially be used should be transplanted. The combination of the vast geographical territory of Russia, the shortage of actual donors, and the relatively small number of transplant centers has led to the need to transport donor lungs by air over long distances.

Attitudes towards snakebite health education and associated factors among residents in China: A national cross-sectional study.

Background: This study aimed to investigate attitudes towards health education on snakebites and to identify the influencing factors among Chinese residents. Additionally, we proposed effective health education strategies for snakebite management.

Methods: Between May 2022 and February 2023, we conducted a nationwide cross-sectional questionnaire survey using a multistage sampling method with supplementary snowball sampling.

Background: Parents/caregivers of children with developmental disabilities (CDD) have a wide range of support needs and there are various interventions available. Support, challenges, and needs among parents/caregivers of CDD likely vary in different geographical settings. This study aimed to analyze the perceptions of support, challenges, and needs among parents/caregivers of CDD in Croatia, North Macedonia, and Serbia.

Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in the Eye of the Beholder and Emergency Medical Service.

Purpose: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a global healthcare problem, with low survival and bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) rates. This study aimed to identify event-related factors in OHCA and their impact on return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) achievement and maintenance until hospital admission.

Patients And Methods: All data were collected from Utstein Resuscitation Registry Template for OHCA from The Institute of Emergency Medicine of Zagreb from January 2012 to August 2022.

Background: The malposition of central venous catheters (CVCs) may lead to vascular damage, perforation, and even mediastinal injury. The malposition of CVC from the right subclavian vein into the azygos vein is extremely rare. Here, we report a patient with CVC malposition into the azygos vein via the right subclavian vein.

Study on the differential hepatotoxicity of raw polygonum multiflorum and polygonum multiflorum praeparata and its mechanism.

Background: Polygonum multiflorum (PM), a widely used traditional Chinese medicine herb, is divided into two forms, namely raw polygonum multiflorum (RPM) and polygonum multiflorum praeparata (PMP), according to the processing procedure. Emerging data has revealed the differential hepatotoxicity of RPM and PMP, however, its potential mechanism is still unclear.

Methods: In our study, we investigated the differential hepatotoxicity of RPM and PMP exerted in C57BL/6 mice.

Pseudovitelliform maculopathy associated with hereditary hemochromatosis.

Background: Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is an inherited autosomal recessive iron metabolism disorder resulting from a C282Y mutation in the gene. Mutations in the gene may result in iron accumulation and oxidative stress in the retina, resulting in macular degeneration. This article describes two patients with HH who were treated with erythrocytapheresis or phlebotomy, with no exposure to deferoxamine or any other chelation therapy, and who developed visual symptoms.

Dual-core-component multiphasic bioceramic granules with selective-area porous structures facilitating bone tissue regeneration and repair.

Ca-phosphate/-silicate ceramic granules have been widely studied because their biodegradable fillers can enhance bone defect repair accompanied with bioactive ion release and material degradation; however, it is a challenge to endow bioceramic composites with time-dependent ion release and highly efficient osteogenesis . Herein, we prepared dual-core-type bioceramic granules with varying chemical compositions beneficial for controlling ion release and stimulating osteogenic capability. Core-shell-structured bioceramic granules (P8-Sr4@Zn3, P8-Sr4@TCP, and P8-Sr4@HAR) composed of 8% P- and 4% Sr-substituting wollastonite (P8, Sr4) dual core components and different shell components, such as 3% Zn-substituting wollastonite (Zn3), β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), and hardystonite (HAR), were prepared by cutting extruded core-shell fibers through dual-core ternary nozzles, followed by high-temperature sintering post-treatment.

Hypomyelinating leukodystrophy (HLD) is a rare genetic heterogeneous disease that can affect myelin development in the central nervous system. This study aims to analyze the clinical phenotype and genetic function of a family with HLD-7 caused by POLR3A mutation. The proband (IV6) in this family mainly showed progressive cognitive decline, dentin dysplasia, and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

Recovery and Survival of Patients After Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: A Literature Review Showcasing the Big Picture of Intensive Care Unit-Related Factors.

As an important public health issue, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) requires several stages of high quality medical care, both on-field and after hospital admission. Post-cardiac arrest shock can lead to severe neurological injury, resulting in poor recovery outcome and increased risk of death. These characteristics make this condition one of the most important issues to deal with in post-OHCA patients hospitalized in intensive care units (ICUs).

Differences between Health and Non-Health Science Students in Lifestyle Habits, Perceived Stress and Psychological Well-Being: A Cross-Sectional Study.

The aim of this study was to investigate lifestyle habits in health and non-health science students from the University of Split, Croatia, and to evaluate their association with perceived stress and psychological well-being. We surveyed 783 students during February-March 2021. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used in the analysis.

Effect of access to the integrated treatment model for patients with multiple severe injuries in the Chinese population.

Aims: The aim of this study was to enhance the effectiveness of an integrated treatment model for patients with severe multiple injuries in China.

Methods: In this study, we conducted a retrospective analysis of data from 110 patients with multiple severe injuries. These patients were divided into two groups based on the treatment model they received.

Clinical value of foot thermometry in patients with acute limb ischemia.

Objective: We hypothesized that the severity of foot poikilothermy can be used for better differentiation of grades of acute limb ischemia. Thus, the study aim was evaluation of the value of non-contact foot thermometry, performed using a low-cost infrared medical thermometer, as an adjunct for clinical diagnosis of immediately threatened acute limb ischemia.

Methods: It was a single-center observational prospective study performed over 3 years.
